Affiliation to SADTA
An Affiliate is a dance professional who joins a professional association for the
purpose of obtaining…

1. A teachers qualification

2. Information of upcoming events and competition entry forms

3. Development of teaching skills by attending training seminars

4. Be eligible to adjudicate (once qualified).

5. Be internationally recognized

Procedure for Affiliation:


1. Must relinquish amateur status. Once you are an affiliate you may not be
re-instated as an amateur

2. Fill in Affiliation application form and send to the SADTA Branch in your
province (see page 14)

3. Pay annual Affiliation Fee

4. Please note: This is not a qualification and you may not advertise
that you are an Affiliate or a Member of the SADTA.

SADTA Training Courses


The SADTA offer professional teachers training in
all grades from Student to Fellow.
Please note:
We are a training body and will supply you with the Medal test syllabus up to the
grade you are qualifying for as well as lectures pertinent to that grade.
It is advisable to know the dances before coming on course so as to facilitate
your learning experience. Lessons may be booked with any Licentiate qualified
Teacher. Application form for required grade to reach the office by February each
year so as to facilitate course requirements and costs.
See application from on page 15.

Refresher Course
Once Qualified it is VITAL to attend the Training course annually or every two
years to keep abreast of new developments in dance and in the syllabus.
Dance is a living and breathing art form and changes and development are what
make us so versatile and unstoppable. Don’t be left behind. Keep yourself
updated and in the know!!!! Refresher courses are run at a minimal cost each
year. Contact the office for more details. You may only attend a refresher course
for the grade that you currently hold a qualification.

Student Qualification
Procedure as follows:
1. Affiliate to the SADTA Branch in your province.

2. Attend the Dance Diploma day (not applicable to candidates who have
completed a Freestyle Blue Riband medal test )

3. Pass the Dance Diploma Exam ( not applicable to candidates who have
completed a Blue Riband medal test)

4. Attend the SADTA Freestyle Training Course

5. Pass all written exams (please see page 13 regarding failing) Candidate
may not do Practical exam until all written exams have been passed.

6. Assist at min of 3 competitions before practical Exam (please supply


completed event management forms with application )

7. Send in completed Exam Application form to SADTA Head office (page


17) with proof of deposit attached.

8. Pay Exam fee (contact office for cost).Proof of payment must accompany
exam application.

9. May not adjudicate at this level.

10. May put medalists through up to and including Bronze Bar grade only.
11. May Advertise as a Student Teacher of The Freestyle Faculty of the
SADTA

The correct hustle shoes to be worn for practical demonstrations
- Hair as for medal test
- Lady: Stretch dance wear and tights to be worn.
- Men: Lycra shirt and Latin pants or bootleg trousers
- Skirts required for Rock ’n Roll/Hustle and Slowdance

4. Written Exams/Assignments (Pass mark 50%) (Must be


completed before practical exam may be danced)Please see

(Demonstrate each grade as an exam routine)
- Pre-Bronze Freestyle demonstrate entire syllabus in routine
- Bronze Bar Freestyle demonstrate entire syllabus in routine
- Beginner/Novice grade competitive routine (min 8 phrases)

8. Student Rock ‘n Roll


- Badge 2 & 3 (man & lady in an exam routine)
- Pre-Bronze and Bronze Bar (man & lady in an exam routine)
- Novice grade competitive routine (min 12 bars)

9. Student Slowdance
- Badge 3 - Pre-Bronze - Bronze Bar
- Beginner/Novice grade competitive routine (min 4 phrases)

10. Student Hustle


- Bronze Bar 4 count (as man & lady in an exam routine)
- - Novice grade competitive routine (min 6 phrases)

11. Oral
Theory of all Student techniques, principles and basic figures in all styles.
- Theory of Dances for all styles incorporating F/S ,Rock n’ Roll,
Slowdance and Hustle up to and including Bronze Bar

12. Event Management


Assist at a min. of 3 recognized events (studio competitions do
not qualify) before examination date.
An Event Management form signed by organizer needs to be faxed to
S.A.D.T.A office. See page 16
- Must attend at least 2 outside medal tests as an observer.

13. Practical Exam Application

- Apply in writing/ via e-mail to SADTA Head office stating grade
required, and date you would like to do your current exam.
- Fax through proof of payment of practical exam with application. -
(Details available from S.A.D.T.A. office)
- Please fill in application on page 17

14. Rules regarding failing written papers or Practical


- If candidate fails one written paper and overall average is still a pass
then candidate may dance practical exam.
- If Candidate fails more than one written paper then they will need to
re-do the course (at a discounted fee, please contact SADTA office for
details) and re-write at the end of the course
- If Candidate fails practical exam then they will have to re-apply and
pay for a new exam.

Associate Exam

Procedure as follows:

1. Affiliate to the SADTA Branch in your province if not previously affiliated.

2. Candidate needs to hold a Student Teachers Qualification or
Candidate needs to be a South African Champ Title Holder or Finalist or
candidate must have completed a Freestyle Blue Riband medal test .
(Please note: due to the high level of technical knowledge required for this
grade it is advisable to first complete a Student Teacher exam).

3. Need to attend the Dance Diploma Day (not applicable to candidates


who have completed a Freestyle Blue Riband medal test or currently hold
a Freestyle Student Qualification)

4. Need to Pass the Dance Diploma exam (not applicable to candidates who
have completed a Freestyle Blue Riband medal test or currently hold a
Freestyle Student Qualification)

5. Attend the SADTA Freestyle Training Course

6. Pass all written exams (please see page 13 regarding failing) Candidate
May not do Practical exam until all written exams have been passed and
assignments handed in by due date.

7. Complete all competition logistic requirements before practical Exam


(logistic forms with application - see page 16 ) and event management if
not previously completed. (see Student event management point 12)

8. Send in completed Exam Application form to SADTA office (page 17) with
proof of deposit attached.

9. Pay Exam fee (contact office for cost)

10. May adjudicate all grades at Festival Competitions and up to Rising Star
in Championship Competitions.

11. May put medalists through up to and including Silver grade only.
12. May Advertise as an Associate Teacher of The Freestyle Faculty of the
SADTA

- Organizing a Medal Test (assignment)

3. Practical/Theory Demonstrations (Pass mark 75%)


Warm-up (minimum 12 minutes - max 15 minutes)
(not applicable if previously danced student exam)

Associate Freestyle
- Pre-Badge/Badge 1/Badge 2 –
(Examiner to select 2 out of 5 dances)
(not applicable if previously danced a student exam)

- Badge 3 demonstrate entire syllabus (not applicable if previously


danced a student exam)

- Pre-Bronze demonstrate entire syllabus in routine (not applicable if


previously danced student exam)

- Bronze Bar demonstrate entire syllabus in routine (not applicable if


previously danced student exam)

- Bronze demonstrate entire syllabus in routine –

- Silver Bar demonstrate entire syllabus in routine –

- Silver demonstrate entire syllabus in routine -

- Novice competition routine (min of 8 phrases)

5. Associate Rock ‘n Roll


- Pre-Bronze & Bronze routine (man & lady)
- Silver Bar & Silver routine (man & lady)
- Intermediate competition routine (min of 16 Bars )

6. Associate Slowdance
- Attitude & Tabletop (not applicable if previously danced student exam)
Tabletop with side kick and Adv Tabletop,
- Wrap with ronde
- Intermediate competition routine (min of 5 phrases)

7. Associate Hustle
- Bronze 4 count (man & lady)
- Silver bar & Silver 3 count (man & lady)
- Intermediate competition routine (min of 6 phrases )

8. Oral
- Theory of all Student and Associate techniques, principles and basic
figures in all styles.
- Theory of Dances for all styles up to and including Silver.

9. Other - Event Logistics & Event Management


- Assist compere x 2
- Assist scrutineer x 1
- Assist status secretary x 1
- Assist Chairman x 1
- before examination date.
- Must attend at least 2 outside medal tests.
- Assist at 3 competitions for Event Management (not applicable if
previously completed Student Grade)

10. Complete a min of 3 x mock adjudications before being eligible to


adjudicate. Must obtain and adjudicators License annually.

11. Practical Exam Application


- Apply in writing/ via e-mail to SADTA Head Office stating grade
required, who did your last exam and date you would like to do your
current exam.
Fax through proof of payment of practical exam with application. (Details
available from S.A.D.T.A. office) see page 17.

12. Rules regarding failing written papers or Practical


- If candidate fails one written paper and overall average is still a pass
then candidate may dance practical exam.
- If Candidate fails more than one written paper then they will need to

- If Candidate fails practical exam then they will have to re-apply and pay

Licentiate Exam

Procedure for Licentiate Exam:


Must have held an Associate Qualification for a min of 2 years before
completing a Licentiate exam

Licentiate’s are eligible to adjudicate up to and including Championship sections at


competitions as well as put through medalists up to and including Emerald Star

1. Dress Code
- Only jazz shoes or dance trainers allowed for practical demonstrations
(Freestyle; Rock ’n Roll; Slowdance)
- The correct hustle shoes to be worn for both man & lady

- Hair as for medal test
- Lady: Stretch dance wear and tights to be worn.
- Men: Lycra shirt and Latin pants or bootleg trousers
- Skirts required for Rock ’n Roll/Hustle and Slowdance

2. Practical/Theory Demonstrations (Pass mark 75%)


No written exams provided all lectures have been attended

3. Assignment (To be submitted within 4 months of course, failing


to do so will require candidate to re-attend the course at a
discounted rate . No practical may be taken until assignment
has been handed in) (Pass mark 50%)
- Advanced stretching and training of dancers body incorporating safety
and strengthening aspects.
- How to organise a competition

4. Licentiate Freestyle
- Gold Bar demonstrate freestyle syllabus
- Gold demonstrate freestyle syllabus
- Championship Competitive solo routine (min 8 phrases)

5. Licentiate Rock ‘n Roll


- Gold Bar as Man & lady
- Gold as man & Lady
- Championship Competitive routine (min 16 Bars)

6. Licentiate Slowdance
- Gold Bar Full syllabus
- Gold Full Syllabus
- Championship Competitive routine (min 6 phrases)

7. Licentiate Hustle
- Gold Bar as man & lady 3 count
- Gold as man & lady
- - Championship Competitive routine (min 6 phrases)

8. Unprepared demonstration
- Examiner to advise steps to be arranged in a choreographic pattern

9. Oral

- Theory of all basic techniques, principles and figures inc syllabus
For the Student, Associate and Licentiate grades.

Eligibility for Nomination as a Medal Test Examiner

To become an examiner you have to hold a Licentiate Qualification


for a min of 6 years. Vital to attend annual seminars and training
courses annually .Nominations are made by
Examiners at an examiners meeting, then proposed by committee.
The nominees are sanctioned at council.
Eligible to examine amateurs only.

Fellow Exam

Procedure for Fellow:


Must hold a Licentiate Qualification for a minimum period of 5 years
before completing a Fellow exam
Minimum age requirement is 25 years old.

Eligibility for Nomination as a Professional Examiner


(Please see Licentiate page 11)
To be able to examine Professionals you will have to be
an existing Examiner with a Fellow Qualification and will need to be
nominated by the SADTA Professional Training Body.
Once nominated your nomination will be put
forward to National Council.
Note: A Fellow Qualification does not automatically
make you an examiner.

Resigning from the SADTA.


If you no longer wish to be a member of the SADTA due to any reason
whatsoever, please send a letter requesting the relinquishing of your membership
to the SADTA. This means you will no longer be a member of the SADTA and will
no longer receive information regarding updates of the development of dance.
You will no longer be eligible to pay your annual subscriptions or adjudication
fees. You will no longer be eligible for adjudication or be able to put through
medalists. You will be eligible to renew your membership at any time should your
circumstances change.
