CHAMPION/DATA/ROUND 15
BRIS
Hi and welcome to the 15th H&A edition of the Fantasy Freako's rave for 2013. Our midfield was
decimated last round led by the late withdrawal of Gary Ablett - with his official omission coming with
only minutes to go before the lockout. Add to this the early injury to Jobe Watson and the results were
CARL
disastrous for many. On the flip side Dane Swan finally turned it on, with teammate Scott Pendlebury
also getting among the points.
In this week's focus I will look at the possible replacements for Watson, as well as highlight the leading
kick-in players for the year.
COLL
Enjoy this week's read and best of luck for this round and beyond.
ESS
WOUNDED WATSON
Watson lasted only 15 minutes last week against Port Adelaide before he suffered a broken collarbone, managing only
16 points in the process, dropping by $26,300 as a result. Coaches that had him captain would have been devastated,
FREM
especially with the likes of Dane Swan, Scott Pendlebury Ryan O'Keefe all racking up huge scores.
Considering that Watson is expected to miss at least four games, he has to be replaced this week. In assisting you in
making the right call, I have highlighted the leading candidates below, which includes their output across the past
GEEL
month as well as their average against their next three opponents.
As the No.1 scoring player in the league the most obvious choice is Gary Ablett - if he's named that is. As we all know he
missed last week's QClash with a calf injury, but in positive news there was no strain, there was only inflammation around
GCS
his calf muscle. He had a light run on the weekend and is expected to train this week in an attempt to prove his fitness.
Ablett aside, Steve Johnson should be on top of everyone's list. Returning from his two-match ban, he comes up
against Melbourne, a team he has monstered in recent times, racking up 163 and 171 in his past two games against
GWS
them, with both those matches played at this weeks' venue Simonds Stadium.
Teammate Joel Selwood is a cheaper alternative and is also worth considering. In what will be his 150th AFL match,
he racked up 178 points in his most recent game against Melbourne in Round 19, 2011. He is also in solid form,
HAW
averaging 127 points per match across his past four (minus the Ryan Crowley affected 38 in Round 14).
If we analyse the below table with the next three opponents as the measure, it's Dane Swan that heads that list,
averaging 124 points per game. He is coming off a massive haul of 41 disposals and 163 points against Carlton - a
MELB
performance that was long overdue if you ask me. Considering that he comes up against the Suns and the Giants after
this round, he is a must have if he's not already in your side.
Sam Mitchell should also be on your radar, with an average of 113 against his next three opponents. Coming off his
second-highest score for the year (127) his breakeven of 52 points also adds to his appeal.

KICK-IN SPECIALISTS
CARL
I'm sure that I'm not the only coach that gets excited when one of my players takes a kick-in. It's
the easiest three points a player can collect, but not all of them count. For those that aren't aware, a
player must kick the ball into himself for the kick to be officially recorded, otherwise it doesn't count
COLL
towards the kick tally.
If we take a look at the leading kick-in players this season, as highlighted below, Carlton's Andrew
Walker has taken the most of any player, recording 92 from his 14 games. The Western Bulldogs'
ESS
Brett Goodes ranks second with 83, but from an average perspective he actually comes out on top
given he has played fewer games - taking eight per match. Injured West Coast defender Shannon
Hurn rounds out the top-three with 77.
FREM
From a fantasy perspective however, these numbers mean very little. As I mentioned earlier, only
those that are kicked into themselves officially count as kicks and with this in mind Sydney's Nick
Malceski has taken the most - recording 32 which is one more than second placed Dean Terlich
GEEL
(31). Trent McKenzie (29), Andrew Walker (26) and Bachar Houli (25) round out the top five.
Conversely to this, don't get too excited if Jimmy Bartel or Heath Shaw has the ball in their hands.
Only five of their kick-ins havr been to themselves, the equal-lowest tally behind Brent Reilly with
GCS
two. Brett Goodes on the other has recorded only 13 which is the equal sixth-lowest of that group.
The player with the greatest appreciation for the 'cheap' kick is Terlich - with 60.8% of his tally
GWS
kicked into himself - 13% higher than the next best strike rate by Nick Malceski. Jed Adcock, Trent
McKenzie and Bachar Houli rounds out the top-five from a percentage perspective.

now that he has made a successful return from injury. He finished

CARL
Owners of Nathan Hrovat were left bewildered after the Bulldogs
reversed their sub decision last round. Initially starting on the
bench, he was handed the green vest only minutes before the
COLL
opening bounce, managing 55 points from 41% game time once
entering the game. His price rise of $13,400 was little consolation
for those that were relying on his score as cover for Gary Ablett.
