Pakistan: Commentary Sees Karzai's Soft Tone for Taliban Harbinger of Peace

Editorial: "Another Offer of Reconciliation to Taliban"

Once again, Afghan President Hamid Karzai has conveyed this message to the armed Taliban to
unite to end bloodshed in Afghanistan. Afghan President Hamid Karzai has said this when he
was in the funeral prayers of his younger brother Ahmad Wali Karzai, who was killed by his own
bodyguards. He was buried in his native graveyard in Kandahar after his funeral prayers on the
same day.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Taliban claimed responsibility of the murder of Ahmad
Wali Karzai. In a statement issued on the day he was killed, the Taliban also cleared that they
planned the killing of Ahmad Wali Karzai a long time ago.

Hamid Karzai said it on the other day after the funeral prayers of his brother Ahmad Wali Karzai
that even if the armed Taliban have killed my brother, I have opened the doors of my heart for
them. Fight is not a solution to any problem. Another way out is reconciliation. If there is
reconciliation, massacre underway in Afghanistan could be stopped.

Several high profile Afghan government officials, government employees, elders and people
from all fields of life attended the funeral prayers of the brother of the president. Not only the
people of Afghanistan, but also of Pakistan and the United States have expressed great sorrow
over the murder of the brother of Afghan President. Different people have voiced different
opinions in this connection.

The reason is that when somebody's brother is killed, he only thinks about exacting revenge from
the killers. What will be feelings of the sorrowful brother at this time around? The general
impression is that he would be demonstrating anger and wrath. However, Afghan President
Hamid Karzai has forcefully appealed to the armed Taliban for reconciliation for peace.

This lenient tone of Hamid Karzai shows that not only he is a great sincere person, but also a
seasoned politician and a patient leader. He is serious and sincere in resolving the issues of the
Afghan public. It could be that in the light of the said statement of the Afghan President all the
groups engaged in fighting in Afghanistan give up their movements, which are posing obstacles
in the way to peace.
