Confidence, Fluency and Personality!

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 1

Start

If you don't start, you'll never finish. The longer you put it off, the more likely you are to give up. So start.
Now.
Find an English class. Find some English learning software or books. Join an English learning forum.Begin
learning the English alphabet (ABC) and numbers (123).Learn the vocabulary for your hobbies or interests.
Do something. Do anything. Once you've started - don't stop

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 2

Practice Makes Perfect

OK - so you've started. Now what?

Now you have to practice - a lot.

Have you ever worked out how many years it took you to gain your current level in your native language?

Don't forget you had exposure to that language 24 hours a day seven days a week. Now work out how
many hours that was.

So, if you think you can learn all the English you need in an hour and a half a week - think again. Don't
get me wrong, it's fine if you only want to learn certain phrases for travelling or fun: "Two beers please", or
"Hello my name is ...", but if you want to become truly proficient, you've got a long way to go.

You can do a lot by yourself, you can rehearse conversations and explanations you might need to use in
real life, but then you have to get out into that real life. Find a friendly native speaker who would like to
learn your language, or learn about your culture, if you can't do that you can do a lot by finding a language
buddy, someone who is learning English and is on a similar level to you. Finding someone who is better
than you certainly helps, and once you are more proficient find someone who needs your help too.

Just remember, English is a living language, you need to live it.

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 3

Take responsibility

It's easy to expect your teacher to teach you English, but that's not how language acquisition works. The
teacher is there to present English to you, but you have to learn it.

After all, you wouldn't expect a waiter to eat your dinner for you, or a barman to drink your beer for you.

I was always very clear with my students. In the first lesson I would tell them I wasn't there to
teach them English, I was there to help them learn it. There is a difference. So, once you've been presented
with new English words or vocabulary, it's up to you to use it, review it, and even play with it. It's the only
way you'll get it to stick in your brain and start to make sense.

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 4

The most commonly used words in written English

1. The
2. Of
3. And
4. A
5. To
6. In
7. Is
8. You
9. That
10. It
11. He
12. For

These might be the most common words, but they're also the ones that will probably give you the
most trouble, knowing them is one thing, knowing how to use them quite another. Size can be
deceptive.

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 5

Talk to yourself

Talking to yourself is no longer the first sign of madness - it's the first sign of excellence.

"Self-talk" can help you to become more fluent. And the great thing is - you can do it anywhere: in the bath,
in the car, while you're taking the dog for a walk.

Try to put a regular time aside every day when you can talk to yourself in English. Talk about what you
did yesterday, what you are doing, about interesting things which have happened to you and the things
you're planning to do in the future.

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 6

Reflect on what you are learning

Try to recall what you have learnt as you are taking a class as well as afterwards. Try different ways of
studying the material. Think about applying these new concepts to your work situation. From time to time,

review the classes you have completed as a refresher. Do some of the exercises you did a few months ago,
and see if you've improved your score.

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 7

Learning Vocabulary 1 - Learn words in context

Research shows that the vast majority of words are learned from context. To improve your vocabulary pay
close attention to how words are used

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 8

Learn from your mistakes

We all make mistakes, so we need to learn to accept them as a fact of life. Making a genuine mistake does
not make you any less of a person. If anyone gives you an unnecessarily stressful time about making a
mistake, remember they will have made just as many mistakes as you, if not more. The question 'May I
congratulate you on never having made a mistake in your life?' is a useful answer here (just not to your
teacher)!

Never making a mistake means never living life to the full. More useful lessons are learnt from mistakes
than from successes. Children learn to walk because they get up when they fall, not because they stay
down. Repeat each morning that to risk failure is to court success.

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 9

Learn to learn you never finish learning, nor do you ever finish learning how to learn.
Think and work independently don't depend solely on your teacher or trainer. Develop a love of learning.
Have a vision that motivates you. Participate in any related activities. Help others to learn.
Learn from your mistakes and failures. Keep a sense of humor. Don’t give up!

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 10

Being Understood

If you're struggling to get someone to understand you, try the tips below:-

Speak more slowly (not louder!)Keep it simple. Use words that are most common. For example, if you
want to say cat, don't use the word feline. Keep it simple. Use basic sentence structures
(subject/verb/object).Don't worry about pronouns; instead use the names of people you are talking about.
Use a lot of hand gestures. "Do you mean up?" Raise up your hands to help the person understand the
word.

Use sound effects. You may feel silly, but if you are trying to tell someone that something exploded, using
the sound "Ka Boom!" will get your point across!

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 11

Learning Vocabulary 2

Learning a word won't help very much if you promptly forget it. Research shows that it takes from 10 to 20
repetitions to really make a word part of your vocabulary.

It helps to write the word - both the definition and a sentence you make up using the word - perhaps on an
index card that can later be reviewed.

As soon as you learn a new word, start using it. Review your index cards periodically to see if you have
forgotten any of your new words.

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 12

Learn Synonyms

Synonyms - are words that mean the same thing. When you have learnt a new word see if there are any
synonyms for it. It expands your vocabulary and it will make your English more interesting and less
repetitive.

Yet again using flash cards as a memory aid can help. Write the word you know on one side of the card
and the most common synonyms for that word on the other side. See how many you can remember.

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 13

Take Part

It might seem a bit obvious, but believe me I've taught enough classes to know there's always one person
who is reluctant or unwilling to take part. The one who sits with his or her arms folded as if to say "Go on
then, teach me." Well I'm afraid that no one can teach you any language. Rather, you have to learn it and in
order to do this you have to participate. To get the full benefits of any learning experience you need to be
active, if not proactive:-

Get involved, participate in discussions and don't let your shyness hold you back.

Think of your learning experience as a good investment. The more you put in, the more you'll get out.

Ask your teacher to organize some role-plays or 10 minutes free speaking time in the lesson.

If there's something you don't understand in the lesson say so. Teachers aren't psychic, if you sit with a
smile on your face nodding politely, we'll quite happily move on to the next nasty bit of grammar.

Ask for help - don't be too proud to admit you don't know everything.

Check on your progress

Do you feel you aren't making any progress?

Look at some past exercises or written texts; see if you can do better. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Are you still making the same kind of mistakes?

Try to spot any patterns.

If you are enrolled in English class asks your teacher for feedback.

I know I say you learn from your mistakes, but if you keep making the same ones then they're just bad
habits.

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 15

Oral Tests

If you are asked to give a presentation, try to choose something that interests you. You need a topic that
you are very familiar with and can research quickly and efficiently.

What are your interests or hobbies? Do you have a sporting talent that you can talk about? Do you know
about an interesting subject that no-one else in your group does?

When you have decided on your topic and are writing about it, make some "cue cards" with the important
points written on them.

Make the presentation eye-catching and attention grabbing. Get a couple of pictures or illustrations to
accompany it (a picture paints a thousand words, but don't overdo it).

It may also help your confidence to give the presentation in front of supportive members of the family or
your friends.

These tips should make sure you are confident by the time you give your presentation.

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 16

Learning New Vocabulary 2

Read 10 words from your English dictionary daily.

After you've read them, try writing two sentences using all 10 words. It's not easy, but it can be fun.

If you find it difficult to remember the meaning of a word write it on a card - For example: squirrel

On Wikipedia - One well-known trait of some species of squirrel is the gathering and storing of nuts for the
winter.

On Google - Squirrel is the common name for rodents of the family Sciuridae, and can sometimes be used
to describe someone who is a 'goof' or 'clown'.

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 18

Learning New Vocabulary 4

Linking a new word to a picture is a good way of remembering it. Try searching Google Images for the
word.

For example: Search for the word "tarpauline" in Google Images and you'll find lots of pictures of
tarpaulines.

You can even print out the best one you find. Stick it on a flash card - picture one side - word the other.
That way you can test yourself later.

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 19

Learning New Vocabulary 5

Keep a notebook and pencil on you at all times. Whenever you see or hear a new word, write it down.
Write down where you saw or heard it too, it will help you remember it later. Look the word up on the
internet or in a dictionary when you get home.

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 20

Learning New Vocabulary 6

When you come across a new word avoid translating it into your native language.

It is tempting to do so, but it is easy to mistranslate words and it will slow down your progress eventually,
or even worse might lead into embarrassing situations.

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 21

Learning New Vocabulary 7

Incorporate English into your daily life.

See if you can name everything you come into contact with, from getting up in the morning, until you go to
bed at night.

ENGLISH LEARNING TIP 22

Train your ears

You ears will recognize words that are similar in sound to your own language, but may well ignore sounds
they're unfamiliar with. You need to train them, just like you do when you're practicing pronunciation.
Concentrate on distinguishing individual words; don't worry too much about understanding what they
mean.

MORE ENGLISH LEARNING TIPS

1. Learning a language means learning a skill, not acquiring knowledge. You test your command of a
foreign language by your ability to perform in it, not by how much you know about it. Performance refers
to your ability to understand, speak, read and write. Knowledge refers mainly to grammar rules and
vocabulary.

2. So avoid reading anything that you know is too difficult for you. Reading should be a pleasure, so the
texts should be within your range.

3. If you read enough, you will find that you will acquire a large vocabulary without needing to turn to the
dictionary all the time.

4. If you are reading an argument, make notes on the points 'for' and 'against'. Once you have these notes,
use them to give a little talk in English which attempts to recreate what you have just read. Alternatively,
use the notes to 'say the text to yourself' as a mental exercise. You will soon get into the habit of not only
reading in English, but thinking in English as well. Thinking in a foreign language is an indispensable
requirement of fluency.

5. You should read as widely as you can. You don't want to read pieces which are mainly about language
and language learning, so try to read articles in general magazines (either local or international).

6. The best way to give up smoking is to stop smoking cigarettes, etc. The best way to eat less is to start
eating less. The best way to read an article is to read it.

7. Writing a summary of something you have read is excellent practice.

8. Keeping a diary is an excellent way of improving your written English for the following reasons:

1. It is constant practice.

2. You are writing about true experiences.

3. Writing a diary gives you constant practice in three writing styles: narration, description and reflection.

9. Remember, there are two kinds of vocabulary: receptive and productive. Receptive vocabulary refers to
the words you can recognize and understand but can't necessarily use. Productive vocabulary refers to the
words you know and can use with confidence.

10. Its totally pointless learning grammar for its own sake.

11. Sentence structure is the way we show the relationship between ideas and events.

12. The most important thing to do with a dictionary is really to use it, above all when you are reading. Use
it till you know your way round it and enjoy what it offers you.

13. Reading a newspaper is the very best thing you can do to improve your English. Don't set yourself too
much reading so you become discouraged. Read a little from a newspaper every day. It will put you in
touch with a whole range of subjects in good modern English.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH SKILLS

My most important piece of advice is: "Do something (anything). If you don't do anything, you won't get
anywhere. Make it your hobby, not a chore, but above all have fun!"

Don't be in too much of a hurry. You're setting off on a long journey and there'll be delays and frustrations
along the way. Sometimes you'll be in the fast lane and other times you'll be stuck in traffic, but there will
also be lots of interesting things and interesting people along the way. Take your time to really enjoy the
experience.

There are many ways to improve your level of English, but only you can find the right way for you. Here
are a few tips that might help:-

Improve your Learning Skills

Learning is a skill and it can be improved.

Your path to learning effectively is through knowing yourself your capacity to learn processes you have
successfully used in the past your interest, and knowledge of what you wish to learn

Motivate yourself

If you are not motivated to learn English you will become frustrated and give up. Ask yourself the
following questions, and be honest:-

Why do you need to learn/improve English? Where will you need to use English? What skills do you need
to learn/improve? (Reading/Writing/Listening/Speaking) How soon do you need to see results? How much
time can you afford to devote to learning English? How much money can you afford to devote to learning
English? Do you have a plan or learning strategy?

Set yourself achievable goals

You know how much time you can dedicate to learning English, but a short time each day will produce
better, longer-term results than a full day on the weekend and then nothing for two weeks.

Joining a short intensive course could produce better results than joining a course that takes place once a
week for six months.

Here are some goals you could set yourself:-

Join an English course (and attend regularly). Do your homework. Read a book a month. Learn a new word
every day. Visit an English speaking forum every day. Read a news article on the net every day. Do 10
minutes listening practice every day? WatchEnglish film at least once a month. Follow a soap, comedy or
radio or TV drama.

A good way to meet your goals is to establish a system of rewards and punishments. Decide on a reward
you will give yourself for fulfilling your goals for a month. A bottle of your favorite drink A meal out / or a
nice meal at home A new outfit manicure or massage Understanding how you learn best may also help
you. There are different ways to learn. Find out what kind of learner you are in order to better understand
how to learn more effectively.

TYPES OF LEARNERS

THE VISUAL LEARNER

Do you need to see your teacher during lessons in order to fully understand the content of a lesson? Do you
prefer to sit at the front of the classroom to avoid visual obstructions (e.g. people's heads)? Do you think in
pictures and learn best from visual displays including: diagrams, illustrated text books, overhead
transparencies, videos, flipcharts and hand-outs? During a lecture or classroom discussion, do you prefer
to take detailed notes to absorb the information?

Learning Tip- you may benefit from taking part in traditional English lessons, but maybe private lessons
would be better.

THE AUDITORY LEARNER

Do you learn best through verbal lectures, discussions, talking things through and listening to what others
have to say? Do you interpret the underlying meanings of speech through listening to tone of voice, pitch,
speed and other nuances? Does written information have little meaning until you hear it?

Learning Tip - you may benefit from listening to the radio or listening to text as you read it. You could try
reading text aloud and using a tape recorder to play it back to yourself.

THE TACTILE/KINESTHETIC LEARNER

Do you learn best through a hands-on approach, actively exploring the physical world around you? Do
you find it hard to sit still for long periods? Do you become distracted easily?

Learning Tip - you may benefit from taking an active part in role plays or drama activities.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH GRAMMAR

Use self-study grammar books.

Practice forming meaningful sentences. Make positive statements negative, turn statements into questions,
make active statements passive. Turn past tense sentences into present tense sentences etc. etc.Learn the
different tenses. Learn by heart a simple example sentence using each tense.

Most importantly, try to develop a feeling for English.

IMPROVE YOUR READING SKILLS

Make a habit of reading regularly. Read as many English books, newspapers and magazines as you can get
your hands on.

Reading should be fun, so make sure the texts you choose are not too difficult for you. If the book or article
you are reading is a chore, then find something easier.

Find an author you like and read all their books. By doing this you will get used to the style of a particular
author and the typical vocabulary and grammar they use. As you read more of his/her books you will find
it easier and easier.

If you have a local library finds out if they stock English books or if they have bilingual editions of English
classics. Or ask them to stock English translations of books you are already familiar with.

Try reading things more than once. Read something and then read it again a few weeks/months later. You
should find your understanding has improved.

Learning Tip - don't try to understand every word. Try to understand the overall meaning of a sentence or
passage.

Learning Tip - don't translate - only use a dictionary if a word keeps appearing in a text and you still don't
understand it.

Learning Tip - don't just read a book and then forget about it - try to analyze it.

IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH - SPEAKING AND ENGLISH - PRONUNCIATION SKILLS

The first rule of speaking English is to speak clearly, concisely and use simple vocabulary. KISS - keep it
short and simple.

Remember you probably won't just speak to native speakers. There are roughly 380 million native
speakers, but as many as a billion people speak it as a second language. So it's a good idea to avoid idioms
and slang (I always say learn it, but don't use it).

It might sound clever to say "You're barking up the wrong tree," but if you misuse it or if the other person
doesn't understand you, you'll only look silly when you try to explain what you meant to say, or what it
actually means.

There's also a saying in English "Have you swallowed a dictionary?" It is applicable to anyone who uses
long, complicated words when a shorter word will do. Short sentences are just as good (if not better) than
long explanations. The value in what you have to say is what you say, not how clever you look or sound
when you say it.

Get over any fear you might have of making mistakes. You will make mistakes.

Be patient with yourself. Learning any language can be frustrating, but frustration won't help you, so let it
go. Grasp every opportunity you have to speak with people in English. Talk to friends who are also
learning English. Go out together for coffee and only speak English to each other! Read short stories out
loud and try to see, say and hear the words to reinforce your memory. Record yourself and play it back
later, how does it sound?

Find native English speaking friends:-

Look for people with the same interests as you. It's no good asking everyone you meet to help you with
your English, rather develop natural friendships based on your hobbies etc. Eventually you will make
friends and they will be much more likely to give you correction / guidance.

Once your English is good enough, go shopping in some tourist areas. You'll find lots of shop assistants
speak very good English.

If you can travel to an English speaking country, do it.

SINGING

Try singing along to English songs. With friends or in the privacy of your own bathroom. Lots of the major
games consoles have karaoke games nowadays, like Sing Star on the PlayStation.

PRONUNCIATION SKILLS

Don't get too hung up on trying to sound like a native speaker. Would you start learning the piano in an
attempt to sound like Mozart? Probably not. Accents don't matter, as long as people can understand you,
but pronunciation is important.

Learn the phonetic alphabet.

List words that have the same sound add to the lists as you learn more words.

For example words that rhymes with me:-Work on one problem sound at a time. Read slowly
concentrating on the pronunciation of particular words. Record yourself, keep the tape and record yourself
later, have you improved? Don't be shy - ask a friend to listen to the tape too.

Don't worry about sounding like a native, it is more important to speak clearly and pleasantly than it is to
sound like the Queen of England.

The most important thing to think about is can people understand you? If you have a problem being
understood then find someone who speaks English clearly and try to copy the way they speak. Pay
particular attention to speed and diction.

STUDY ENGLISH WORDS EVERYDAY

How many English words can I learn per day?

10 English words or phrases per day aren’t too many, are they? Just give it a try. You will find that you can
learn them in next to no time.

So why not take a little time each day (Monday to Friday) to learn 10 new words? Use the weekend to
revise what you have learned during the past week(s). This way you’ll enrich your English vocabulary by
50 new words per week. (That’s 200 new English words after a month!)

LEARN ENGLISH THROUGH READING

Read English texts as often as you can.

Don’t look up every word which is new to you – even without a dictionary you will understand a lot. Just
concentrate on what you do understand and try to find out the rest by intelligent guessing. That works
rather well, especially if you are interested in the topic. If you are a football fanatic for example, you
probably won’t have problems understanding an English text about football.

On the other hand, someone who is better in English than you but not interested in football will have more
problems understanding the same text.

Do also watch the news in your native language and try to find English news to some of the topics. Even if
you don't understand every word in the English text, you will get the message as you already know what
the text is about.

Read between the lines.

LEARN ENGLISH THROUGH MOVIES

Thanks to DVD, watching films in English has become an easy thing to do.

Choose your favorite film – you’ve watched that film a dozen times and probably know all the dialogues
off by heart in your native language. So following the story will be easy for you.

Have paper and pen ready as you may want to jot down useful words or phrases that you wish to learn.
English subtitles might be useful for that (although they might differ from what is actually being said).

If you are not used to watching films in English, choose a only few episodes – at the beginning it isn’t easy
to concentrate on listening to the foreign language for a long time.

What you see is what you get.

LEARN ENGLISH THROUGH SONGS

Vocabulary needs to be revised again and again. Well, what could be better than studying vocabulary by
listening to your favorite songs?

Read the lyrics first and try to understand them. You don’t have to translate the lyrics word by word, just
try to find out what the song is all about. (Note: ‘Rap’ might not be practical as those songs usually contain
slang words that not even ‘ordinary’ English native speakers know.)

Pick some words or phrases from the song that you would like to learn. If necessary, look up their exact
meaning in a dictionary. A dictionary might also be useful to find other interesting phrases with the word.

Now, to learn the vocabulary, all you have to do is listening to the song again and again (that shouldn’t be
a problem if it’s one of your favorite songs).

Let the music turn you on.

TARGETS

Set small, achievable targets, e.g.:

learn 10 new English words or phrases every day, Mondays to Fridays (repeat on Saturdays, relax
on Sundays)
study 15 minutes every day
read the lyrics of an English song every week and try to understand its main content
read and try to understand one short English text every week

Reaching your target step by step is much better than setting a huge target that you cannot achieve. Easy
does it … and keeps your motivation up.

Many a mickle makes a muckle.

MOTIVATION IS HALF THE WORK

‚Boring!‛ Well, that’s definitely not the way it works.

Try to find a positive aspect to studying. Why not watch your favourite film in English and write down
some useful words or phrases that you want to remember. You could also read the lyrics of Top 10 songs
and try to understand what they are about. Or check out celebrity sites and learn more about famous
actors, bands and other stars. This sure is good for your vocabulary and on top of that – it’s lots of fun.

Always look on the bright side of life.

DON’T OVERDO IT

Studying 15 minutes per day is more effective than studying 2 hours once every week.

For a whole week, try studying 15 minutes each day. Not less. And definitively not more than that (even if
you could). You will see that the following day, studying is much more fun, simply because you didn't push
it to the limit the day before.

Know when to stop before you start.

TREAT YOURSELF TO SOMETHING GOOD

Everbody notices what you failed to do. But nobody appreciates what you succeeded to do. That's rather
frustrating, isn't it?

Appreciation is always a good motivation. And if nobody else appreciates your efforts, you'll have to do it
yourself. Set a target for the day, the week or the term and do also set a reward for yourself that you can
look forward to, e.g.:

If I achieve the target, I will treat myself to...

an adventurous monster killing game on my computer

a visit to the cinema at the weekend
a short trip to Picnic Spot
...

If it's a long-time target, write your reward down on a piece of paper and hang it up in a place where it
catches your eye. This sure will be a good motivation.

MOST EFFECTIVE TIP: "THINK IN ENGLISH"

One of the most common mistakes that English learners make is, they think in their mother tongue. When
they want to say something in English, they think in their mother tongue, translate it to English and then
say it in English. The result is a very flawed English sentence. Never do this!

If you want to speak in English fluently you will have to learn to "think" in English. When you are
constructing sentences in your mind before saying them, think in English and form them in English in your
mind.

10 TIPS TO IMPROVE THE WAY YOU SPEAK ENGLISH

Part I: Want to 'neutralize' your accent?

Many deserving candidates lose out on job opportunities because of their vernacular accent.
Can I 'neutralize' my accent?

Yes, you can. All you need to do is train yourself to speak English as comfortably and perfectly as you
speak your mother tongue.

How do you train yourself? By inculcating certain practices in your daily lifestyle. These will get you closer
to sounding like a native English speaker and equip you with a global accent -- and you will speak not
American or British English, but correct English.

This is the first step to learn any other accent, be it American or British or Australian.

TIPS TO HELP 'NEUTRALISE' YOUR ACCENT

I. Observe the mouth movements of those who speak English well and try to imitate them.

When you are watching television, observe the mouth movements of the speakers. Repeat what they are
saying, while imitating the intonation and rhythm of their speech.

ii. until you learn the correct intonation and rhythm of English, slow your speech down.

If you speak too quickly, and with the wrong intonation and rhythm, native speakers will have a hard time
understanding you.

Don't worry about your listener getting impatient with your slow speech -- it is more important that
everything you say be understood.

iii. Listen to the 'music' of English.

Do not use the 'music' of your native language when you speak English. Each language has its own way of
'singing'.

iv. Use the dictionary.

Try and familiarize yourself with the phonetic symbols of your dictionary. Look up the correct
pronunciation of words that are hard for you to say.

v. Make a list of frequently used words that you find difficult to pronounce and ask someone who
speaks the language well to pronounce them for you.

Record these words listen to them and practice saying them. Listen and read at the same time.

vi. Buy books on tape.

Record yourself reading some sections of the book. Compare the sound of your English with that of the
person reading the book on the tape.

vii. Pronounce the ending of each word.

Pay special attention to 'S' and 'ED' endings. This will help you strengthen the mouth muscles that you use
when you speak English.

viii. Read aloud in English for 15-20 minutes every day.

Research has shown it takes about three months of daily practice to develop strong mouth muscles for
speaking a new language.

ix. Record your own voice and listen for pronunciation mistakes.

Many people hate to hear the sound of their voice and avoid listening to themselves speak. However, this
is a very important exercise because doing it will help you become conscious of the mistakes you are
making.

x. Be patient.

You can change the way you speak but it won't happen overnight. People often expect instant results and
give up too soon. You can change the way you sound if you are willing to put some effort into it.

WANT TO 'NEUTRALISE' YOUR ACCENT?

How would you describe the term communication?

Is it merely the 'act' of sending or receiving a message, or is it the 'process' of sending a message?

Actually, it is both the act of sending and receiving a message as well as the process of doing it. The process
of communication also involves getting the desired response.

Heard of accent neutralization?

~ He has got a strong Malayalam accent.

~ She is Bengali but speaks with an impeccable English accent.

~ He speaks with a broad/ heavy/ strong/ thick Bihari accent.

~ I thought I could detect a slight south Indian accent.

~ He spoke in heavily accented English.

What exactly do we mean by the above statements? An accent is the peculiar style and rhythm of speaking
a particular language; we also call it 'speech music'.

Factors like mother tongue, socio-economic background and medium of education influence one's accent.

Which brings us to accent neutralisation? It means removing all traces of the mother tongue rhythm and
adopting the native rhythm of the language you are trying to learn -- English in this case.

With the onset of BPO and international job opportunities in the Indian market, there is a demand for
candidates who can speak English without their local accent creeping in.

You’re English, influenced by your Hindi?

Many speakers do not realize they are incorporating English words in Hindi sentences or Hindi words in
English sentences.

Take for example:

"Pitaji, time kya hua hai (Father, what is the time right now)?"
"I have hazaar things on my mind right now (I have thousands of things on my mind right now)."

Today, 'Indian English' is widespread and well-known for its many eccentricities. For this reason, its
'grammar' must be taken with a pinch of salt.

Indian accents vary greatly from those who lean towards a purist British language to those who lean more
towards speech that is tinted with the 'vernacular' (Indian language).

~ The most common instance of modified sounds is the changing of the sounds of English letters like 'D', 'T'
and 'R'.

~ South Indians tend to curl the tongue more for the 'L' and 'N' sounds.

~ Bengalis (from both India [ Images ] and Bangladesh) and Biharis often substitute 'J' for 'Z' (as in 'jero'
instead of 'zero').

~ People, especially from the Sindh (this pertains to both Indians and Pakistanis) have the habit of changing
the 'W' sound to 'V' (as in 'ven' instead of 'when'). The rule to follow to overcome this habit is to 'kiss' your
'Ws' and bite your 'Vs'.

What we are striving for is the ability to communicate effectively, especially in the English language, which
has the reputation of being one of the most complex languages to learn. I reiterate -- not difficult, but
complex.

THE INTRICACIES OF ENGLISH

First, let's understand some of the intricacies of the English language through these two verses from a very
popular poem titled Poem Of English (author unknown).

Liberty, library, heave and heaven,

Rachel, ache, moustache, eleven.
We say hallowed, but allowed,
People, leopard, towed, but vowed.
Mark the differences, moreover,
Between mover, cover, clover.
Leeches, breeches, wise, precise,
Chalice, but police and lice.
Camel, constable, unstable,
Principle, disciple, label.

Petal, panel and canal,

Wait, surprise, plait, promise, pal.
Worm and storm, chaise, chaos, chair,
Senator, spectator, mayor.
Tour, but our and succour, four,
Gas, alas and Arkansas.
Sea, idea, Korea, area,
Psalm, Maria, but malaria.
Youth, south, southern, cleanse and clean,
Doctrine, turpentine, marine.

What's special about this verse? Words spelt differently have similar pronunciations.

For example, turpentine is pronounced as tur + pen + tien, where as marine, which also ends with 'ine' is
pronounced as mar + een. Words spelt similarly have different pronunciations, not to mention the ones that
sound nowhere near to the way they are written.

For example, you have psalm (pronounced as Saam) and ache (pronounced as ake as in bake).

Once you are aware of these intricacies, you will find that your pronunciation improves dramatically.
