ART 2

Course Syllabus
2015-2016
Friendly High School

Art 2 is an upper-level art course for those who are interested in pursuing artmaking again while in high
school, as well as in the possibility of schooling, training, or other arts dedication beyond the classroom. Students
who successfully complete Art 2 are eligible and encouraged to consider undertaking the rigorous and demanding
course work of the Advanced Placement Studio Class. In Art 2, students will build upon previous knowledge, skills,
and languages cultivated in Art 1. Work in this course should be evident of greater time, care, and skill investment
(both in craft AND concept) than works completed in Art 1. Students will conduct greater sustained investigations
and solve more open-ended problems.

Objectives:
(National Core Art Standards)
Students will:

- generate, conceptualize, organize, and refine artistic ideas and work.


- analyze, interpret, select, develop artistic ideas for presentation.
- perceive and analyze intent and meaning in artistic work according to criteria.
- synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art.
- relate artistic ideas and works within societal, cultural, and historical context to deepen understanding

Attendance Policy:

Students are required to attend all scheduled classes and adhere to the Prince George’s County Public Schools
attendance policy. No credit grade will be given without an excused yellow slip if absent or tardy.

Expectations:

1. Be on time: ​ If you are late, Friendly’s policy requires teachers to contact a parent/guardian when
students have three unexcused tardies. In the event that you are late, do not disrupt instruction; catch up
with me during studio work time.
2. Cell phones: ​ Earplugs are not to be visible when entering or exiting the classroom. All cell phones must
be stored away and out of sight unless otherwise instructed or permitted.
3. Be respectful of the speaker​ : There will be no conversations during a demonstration or while someone
is speaking to the entire class. If during a group meeting, discussion, demonstration, or lecture, raise your
hand to contribute to the conversation.
4. THROWING objects will result in an automatic referral.
5. Profanity, disrespectful behavior and insensitive speech is strictly prohibited.
6. Respect the room and materials: ​ Do not sit on tables or desks unless permitted to do so, ensure that
your studio clean up/set up duties are carried out to your best ability. Care for and keep the shared
materials well maintained.
7. No​ food, drinks, candy, snacks, gum, ice, plant matter, spices, etc. are permitted in the classroom.
8. Restrooms: ​ Use the restroom only during studio work time.
9. Make-Up Work​ : Major projects can be handed in up to one week after the due date for a 5 point
reduction penalty per day. The work will be a 0 unless an excused yellow slip is presented, in which case
you will have an extended time frame to complete the work according to the number of days absent.
10. Group and Class Work: ​ Students are expected to collaborate and work alongside each other
respectfully. There is a 0 tolerance policy for any disrespect or breaking of the administrative and
classroom rules.

Homework Policy:

Homework will be assigned every day but will vary in amount and depth. Late work will be accepted at the
beginning of the following class for up to 50%.

Assessment: Tests, Quizzes, Written Reflections 30%

Grades for all written and visual work will be determined by a rubric with specific criteria. All completed
work should be turned in to the designated Art 1 bin.

Required Materials:

- 1 folder with pockets


- 1 SKETCHBOOK- spiral bound, durable (hardcover or strong plastic cover), at least 70 pages
You can find sketchbooks at Michaels, AC Moore, Target, Office Depot, and Barnes and
Noble (Moleskin series)
1 pencil sharpener
- 1 box of pencils to be donated to a classroom stockpile
- 1 box of blue or black pens if you prefer to write in ink

All materials are due ​


Monday, September 1st (A-Day), Tuesday, September 2nd (B-Day)​

a homework grade for bringing in your materials on time.
Extra Credit Materials:

Up to 2 extra credit homework grades can be earned for bringing in any of the following supplies:
