3) Recognizing the importance of negotiation of meanings in SLA, does it always help

in an EFL context? Why? Why not?

I’m so sorry but in this time I do not totally agree with my classmates. Surely in many cases where
Meaning Negotiation takes place the teacher hopefully reaches the goal of clarification request,
comprehension checks or may be confirmation checks. However in other many cases the Meaning
Comprehension does not achieve its purpose instead of causes frustration and embarrassment.

In the EFL context there are an innumerable of strategies and techniques to find the meaning of a
word, we as teachers must try to find the best strategy or technique to do find it out. Negotiation
of Meaning does not guarantee its target neither the intake of the target language.

Although we cannot deny NOM is relevant in the EFL because it can clarify many doubts learners
could have like in the following example: Teacher: so you came here by yourself or did you come
with friends? Learner: no no I - what? what you say? Teacher: did you come to the states with
friends or did you come alone? Learner: no, alone – from Toronto (Pica 1987). However this
relevance is given by the context where is carried out for example in a context where learners are
kids is not appropriate to use it the results are not the expected. It is more profitable with
youngers and adults. Pica and her colleagues’ (1996) study corroborated the influence of
negotiated interaction on learners’ modification of their speech while interacting with each other
or with native speakers of English. Musumeci’s (1996) study, on the other hand, confirmed the
importance of the negotiation of meaning in the learning experience as it does not only result in
the modification of the teachers’ speech but also the modification of learners’ language while
interacting with their teachers.

If I were the man in the comic surely I would negotiate the meaning of this expression with my
instructor or with my classmates, trying to find if had been wrong with the interpretation of the
expression.
