Power System Analysis Exercise II: Load Flow Computation in PowerWorld

1 Introduction
In this computer exercise you will accomplish load flow computations for different operating conditions of
the network example illustrated on the first page. You will examine the interaction of the individual network
components and the connection between the transmission effect and the reactive power and the voltage
magnitudes and angles at the nodes.
The program Powerworld, which you will use for the load flow computation and for the visualization of the
results, is already installed on the computers you will use during the exercise. It can also be downloaded
here:

Load the data for the example network and fill out tables 1 and 2 with the load flow solution for the normal
operation. On high voltage transmission lines the active power flows to the node with the smaller voltage
angle. Examine this, by marking the direction in the picture. Finally, compute the total losses in the system
and describe two ways of calculating them

3 Line Loss
Assume a fault on the line between Bus 5 and Bus 6 (that is, switch this line
off). Simulate the new topology and note down the results of the new load flow
into tables 3 and 4.
