Reminder: SNACK: Please make sure that you send a healthy (Nut Free) snack
with your child every day. Our lunch is not until 12:25 so we enjoy a nice snack
break at 10:50. I am not able to provide snack for the whole class each day.
Scholastic Book Orders:
Our class is LOVING reading time. They are all super interested in finding new
genres and books to get hooked on! A wonderful way to support your child’s
love for reading is to buy MORE BOOKS! Scholastic website has so many
amazing books and they are such great prices!! Here is the link to browse books
and order online: https://clubs.scholastic.com/
Our class code for online orders is RHD8M. All book orders are sent to our school
and then sent home with your child.

Current Learning:

Fundations: We will take Unit 7 Test on Tuesday and begin Unit 8 this week. Unit 8
will take 1 week to complete and will focus on the r-controlled sounds
of ar and or, marking r-controlled syllable types, and combining r-controlled
syllables with other syllable types. The trick words for this unit are: world, answer,
and different. Please check your child’s take-home-folder for the Unit 8 practice.

Math: We’ve already been having a blast exploring the number 1,000! Last
week and this week we continue to build place value understanding as we
count and organize numbers up to 1,000 using a variety of manipulatives
including craft sticks, base ten area pieces and Unifix cubes. Through the use of
these manipulatives, students have numerous opportunities to create and count
bundles of 10 and 100. This week’s focus is on the development of place value
understanding, motivated through the context of MONEY! Students will use 5
and 10-frame models to count money, eventually developing an understanding
of 25 cents as a unit that is composed of groups of 5 and 10. We will work on
combinations of coins with a total value of a dollar or less and combinations of
bills with a total value of several dollars. Please support your child’s
understanding of coin identification at home.

Writing: WOW! I am SO proud of our class! We are building amazing writing

stamina! The students are truly enjoying writing their opinions about books
through writing letters. This week we uncovered our opinions about books
by studying characters, favorite parts, and pictures. We made our letters even
better by retelling important parts. In addition to the powerful word of BECAUSE,
we learned how to use “FOR EXAMPLE” to introduce text evidence. This week
we will “Think about our reader” by including details the reader will enjoy, retell
interesting parts, don’t give away the ending, and get them interested. We will
use checklists to set goals for ourselves as writers, and so much more!!

Reading: We are learning about poetry! Last week we focused

on Alliteration and learned that writers sometimes choose to use the same
beginning letter for multiple words. This week we will focus on rhyming words and
comprehension as we read non-fiction poetry. We will also focus
on retelling stories through several read-alouds.

Social Studies: Beginning this Friday, Mr. Barber, one of our classroom parents,
will be leading Junior Achievement lessons in our classroom! These lessons focus
on the Economics state standards for second grade. We can’t wait!!

Have a GREAT week!
