Song: Daft Punk, “One More Time” (2001)

Vocals: Romanthony
Sample Music: Eddie Johns, “More Spell On You” (1979)
Genre: Electronic Dance Music (EDM)
Style: House
Form: Pre-Chorus Form
The reasoning behind picking Pre-Chorus Form as the form of Daft Punk’s “One More Time” is
because sections 1 and 3 are very similar because they use the same base sample music, but
section 2 is completely different. This points to ABA, or something similar to that form type, but
right before section 2 begins, there is a transitional section of the song that starts the tone change
that is in section 2 and this transitional section also changes what instruments are being played
and how they are played. The Chorus section (section 2) then builds off of the tone change that
was started in the Pre-Chorus (the transitional section) and continues to playing major notes, but
distorting them to sound slightly minor. “One More Time” doesn’t fit very well into a specific
form type, but instead takes bits and pieces of more than one form. There are also elements of the
AABA form present in “One More Time”, as well. The introduction and the first section are
similar, then the Pre-chorus and Chorus introduce a change, and then finally the third section
goes back to the how the introduction was played. The sections are similar, but not similar
enough to consider them the same sections, but these similarities show that there is influence
from the AABA lyrical format. “One More Time” is a mixture of these two formats, but leans
more towards pre-chorus verse, because of the use of a transitional section, with different music,
into a new section that is comprised of the repeating lyrics within the song.
Instruments from the Sample: Drums, hi-hats on a drum set, trombone, bass guitar
The instruments that are in the parts of “More Spell On You” that Daft Punk sample are the
trombone, the drums, the drums playing on a hi-hat, and the bass guitar. “More Spell On You”
also has violin in the song, but that wasn’t in one of the parts that was sampled.
Other Instruments Added: High pitch pass through, electric keyboard, auto-tune, and a drum
machine.
After taking bits and pieces of “More Spell On You,” Daft Punk passed the sections of the song
they chose through a high pass filter to create a higher pitched and sharper noise. This was the
primary distortion filter that they used to change how the instruments sounded. They also added
a beat that was created by a drum machine and used an electric keyboard during one of the
sections. The last sound they created was making another instrument out of auto-tuning
Romanthony’s voice. His voice is auto-tuned in a way to create an extra instrument that is
adding emphasis to ever line he sings and to give the song a more futuristic feel to it.

0:00 – Introduction: The introduction introduces the sample that will be the basis for the song.
The A part of the sample is roughly 3-4 seconds and is played and played 3 times before sample
B, which is then roughly 4 seconds long. The entire AAAB sample takes up between 15 and 16
seconds. The A part of the sample is comprised originally from a trombone and the drums. Then
B section is then just the trombone playing. Both of these parts that are taken from “More Spell
On You” are distorted to make the higher pitched sound that is produced.

0:07 - Sample Part A
0:11 - Sample Part B
0:15 – End of the combined sample in the form AAAB, this end also marks the start of the
second play through of the combined sample.
0:30 – First line in the intro is sung.
One more time
0:31 – End of the second play through of the sample. On the word “time” the bass guitar starts,
the drums are increased in volume and the drums playing on the hi-hats is also added (and after
distortion the hi-hats sound similar to tambourines). This also marks the start of the third
iteration of the combined sample.
0:45 – Second line in the intro is sung
One more time
0:46 – End of the third play through of the sample. On the word “time” the drum machine starts
playing a steady beat. This marks the start of the fourth iteration of the sample.
0:58 – All the added instruments are dropped and the original B part of the combined sample is
played with just the trombone and drums.
1:02 - Section 1: This section is comprised of one (roughly) 4 second sample (sample part A)
being play over and over again throughout each stanza in verse 1. The first two lines of each
stanza get the sample A and then sample A repeats at the start of the third line and finishes at the
end of the fourth line. All the stanzas are played with the combination of the original sample A
with the added bass guitar, drums, the drums hitting the hi-hats, and the drum machine. The first
three stanzas have identical lyrics and then the fourth stanza changes the third and fourth lines.
1:02 - Verse 1
1:02 - Stanza 1
One more time
We're gonna celebrate
Oh yeah, all right
Don't stop the dancing

1:10 - Stanza 2
One more time
We're gonna celebrate
Oh yeah, all right
Don't stop the dancing

1:19 - Stanza 3
One more time
We're gonna celebrate
Oh yeah, all right
Don't stop the dancing
1:27 - Stanza 4: The fourth stanza is slightly different because the sample is cut short at 1:30
and then only the distorted drums playing the hi-hats remains. Then at 1:33 during the word
“time,” the A sample, with all of the extra instruments added, resumes to end section 1.
One more time
We're gonna celebrate
Oh yeah
One more time

1:33 – Interlude: The interlude is comprised of two the AAAB samples that originally started in
the intro. The sample is also play with the added drums, bass guitar, hi-hats, and drum machine,
in the interlude.

2:05 - Pre-Chorus/Transition Section: The samples used in this section don’t follow along
perfectly with the lyrics, but instead they are used to set the tone of this section and help
transition into the next section. The samples that are used in this section are pulled from
previously used parts of “More Spell On You,” but it isn’t the A or B sample that is used in the 1
section or intro. The bass guitar in this section is run through a distortion filter that makes it
sound as if a whammy bar is being used when playing. This distorted bass guitar sound gives this
section a more minor feel than the previous section. The bass is in the background of the section,
and is barely noticed, but the bass is quietly playing major notes, but because of the filter that it
is being passed through, it gives the bass a slight minor sound. Each sample bit in played on
repeat from the start of the section to the end of the section and the bass guitar follows an AAAB
pattern that the song has put forward, but the cycle that it plays on is every 2 lines (two AAAB
sections per stanza). Both the sample drums and the drum machine are playing at a constant beat
throughout the section. The drum machine is using the same beat that is has previously, and the
hi-hats are also being played like they have previously. This section is the pre-chorus of the song
because the next section takes the tone change that was started in this section and starts a chorus
section with that tone.
2:05 – Verse 2
2:05 - Stanza 1
One more time
We're gonna celebrate
Oh yeah, all right
Don't stop the dancing
2:14 - Stanza 2
One more time
We're gonna celebrate
Oh yeah
Don't stop the dancing
One more time

2:21 – Chorus Section: The chorus section is a long section because the chorus is broken up
into two parts that are played in the same way. The first part is almost like another verse, but is
really just a long introduction to the chorus proper.
2:21 - Part 1: The first part of the chorus section only has an electric keyboard being played.
The keyboard alternates between 2 notes and the notes are played in a major key, but the sound
is being distorted to give the notes a more minor feel (This is similar to how the bass guitar was
distorted in the pre-chorus/transition section). Towards the end of the first part (at 3:00), the hi-
hats being played are added to the piano playing and when the hi-hats stop again, this signals the
start of part 2. The verse doesn’t follow repeating lyrics, like in previous sections, but instead,
each stanza has different lyrics.
2:21 - Verse 3
2:21 - Stanza 2
Uhmmm...
You know I'm just feelin'
Celebration tonight

2:33 - Stanza 2

3:00 - Stanza 2: The hi-hat start playing

3:11 - Stanza 2
Music's got me feeling the need
Need
Yeahhh
Come on, all right
We're gonna celebrate

3:23 – The hi-hats stop playing

3:23 – Part 2: The second part of the chorus is the main part of the chorus or the chorus proper.
The first two stanzas’ in verse 4 are used to ease into the repeating lyrics that follow in stanzas 3-
7 (with 7 only missing “One more time” on the second line). Part 2 starts out with just having the
keyboard playing the alternating two notes that it was in part 1, but then at 3:49 part A of the
sample and all the accompanying instruments (drums, hi-hats, drum machine, and bass guitar)
starts back up quietly and gradually increases in volume until 3:58. Then for the rest of verse 4,
Sample A and all of the other instrumental parts (including the keyboard) are played on repeat.
3:24 – Chorus 1
3:24 - Stanza 2

Celebrate and dance so free (One more time)
4:10 - Stanza 2
Music's got me feeling so free (We're gonna celebrate)
Celebrate and dance so free
4:16 - Section 3: The third section to the song starts with the line “One more time” to signal a
transition from the chorus section, back into the verse sections. Like the introduction, the AAAB
sample starts on the word “time.” This entire verse has the drums machine, hi-hats, and the bass
guitar added to the sample that is comprised of the base drums and a trombone sample. The first
stanza in the verse takes the AA part of the combined sample, and then the second stanza takes A
part for the first two lines, and B part for the second two lines. Then for the last two stanzas the
third and fourth lines are missing from the fourth stanza, so only AAA is played. Then after the
AAA part, only hi-hats are being played and everything else is silent, to signal a transition into
section 3. The Lyrics are the same for all four stanzas, except for the fourth stanza, which is
missing lines three and four. There is a slight pause before and after the fourth line in the first 3
stanzas, and this is use to signal the break from one stanza, and then the second pause is used the
start of the next stanza.

4:16 – Transition: “One more time” is used as a transition word to signal the end of previous
section and the start of the next section.

One more time

4:41 - Stanza 2
Music's got me feeling so free
We're gonna celebrate

4:45 Transition: A small instrumental transition to break the verse into two different sections

4:48 - Section 3: Section 3 is exactly the same as section 2, but instead cutting off the second
and third line in the fourth stanza, the fourth stanza keeps the third line “Celebrate and dance so
free.” and then makes two changes. The first change is that at the start of the fourth stanza the
music and vocals begin to fade out to signal the end of the song. The second change that is made
is because the fourth stanza keeps the third line, the fourth stanza starts playing the first half of
sample part B, but never finishes because the song completely fades out at the end of the third
line.
4:48 – Transition: “One more time” is used as a transition word to signal the end of previous
section and the start of the next section.
