The Japanese art of Kintsugi, would be of no value in today’s trend-driven world. Yet,
most still wish to flaunt the art in the interiors of their homes.
Is it the imperfection or the gold that attracts us? Or is it the fact that this technique is
five centuries old? It is about preservation and about cultural appreciation. It is about
embracing fashion that underlines the quality, the art and the culture. It is the desire
to own something that can be preserved rather than wear-and-tear.
Brands like I & Me and Tortoise denim are recycling, patching, and mending jeans
that spell not just sustainable but contemporary too. Avant Garde designers like
Viktor & Rolf, for their Spring/Summer 2017 Couture, created a collection of wear-
able gowns made of vintage dresses from the 40’s and rags from their ateliers. They
brought recycling and mending fashion to the couture world.
Indian designer, Archana Kochhar, presented her collection of ‘Peace silk’ at New York
fashion Week in 2015. Silk that is non-violent, made without killing silkworms as well
as made to be biodegradable was her presentation of ‘peace silk’. An Antwerp based
brand, Honest By manufactures their chic, vegan friendly products through recycled
silk and wool.
In the future, disregarding trends will be the new trend. Embracing regional textiles
and kinds of mending and fixing forms will be the latest obsession. This will establish
an heirship to one’s style.
