Design Criteria
• Environment
– Residential/Business
– Industrial
• Economic
• Engineering
– Contingency for enabling continuity of supply
– Losses should be minimized
– Quality of supply
• Voltage drop within the limit
• Frequency of system interruption
3
Design Factors
• The electrical design involves selection of voltage,
selection of insulators and conductors, voltage
control and selection of protective and control gear
• 4 types of conductor:-
• AAC – All Aluminum Conductor (MEA)
• AAAC – All Aluminum Alloy Conductor
• ACSR – Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforce
• ACAR – Aluminum Conductor Aluminum Alloy Reinforce
9
Overhead Line Parameter
• Resistance
• Conductance
• Inductance
• Capacitance
10
Line Transposition
• Line transposition (L/3) for long transmission line
– Keep power line in balance parameter
– Reduce the interference
• Distance between transpositions ~ 10-40 miles
• No transposition in MEA
