1. A temperature probe moves with velocity 5iˆ + ˆj − 2 kˆ through air. The temperature of
( )
air changes as T ( x, y, z , t ) = x 2 − 3 y + 2 z 3 sin(6t ). Find the rate of change of
temperature measured by the probe.
2. (a) To measure the water current in an ocean, a marker is dropped onto it.
Determine if the trajectory traced by the drifting marker forms a streamline,
streakline, or pathline.
(b) To learn more about the flow, a large number of similar markers are released
at the same point in space in quick succession. Determine if the line connecting
these markers at a later instant forms a streamline, streakline, or pathline.
3. Blood (SG=1) flows with a velocity of 0.5 m/s in an artery. It then enters an
aneurysm in the artery (i.e., an area of weakened and stretched artery walls the causes a
ballooning of the vessel) whose cross-sectional area is 1.8 times that of the artery.
Determine the pressure difference between the blood in the aneurysm and the in the
artery. Assume the flow is steady and inviscid.
4. As shown in the following figure, in a steady flow around a circular cylinder with
( )
radius a, the flow velocity along the dividing streamline is V = V0 1 − a 2 / x 2 .
Find
(a) The pressure gradient ∂p / ∂x along the dividing streamline.
(b) If the pressure at x → −∞ is p 0 , find the pressure at the stagnation point
x = −a .

5. A 50-mm-diameter tube is used to siphon water from the large tank. If the
pressure on the outside of the tube is more than 30 kPa greater than the pressure
within the tube, the tube will collapse and the siphon will stop. If viscous effects
are negligible, determine the minimum value of h allowed without the siphon
stopping.
