Note: a. Total Number of questions: 08. Attempt any five questions. All questions
carry equal marks.
b. Missing data, if any, may be assumed suitably.

3. a) Derive the expression t = for shear stress distribution for a
Ib
rectangular cross section where symbols have their usual meanings.
b) For a T - section with dimensions flange width 100mm, Depth = 200mm and
uniform thickness of 40mm. obtain shear stress distribution and calculate
maximum and average shear stresses if it is subjected to a S.F. = 100 KN.
5. T Gq
a) Deduce the relationship = , Where
J L
T= applied Torque; J= Polar moment of inertia of cross section,
G= Modulus of Rigidity; q = Angle of Twist, and L= Length of the bar.
b) Compare the weight of solid shaft with that of a hollow shaft to transmit a
given power at a given speed with a given maximum shear stress, the outside
diameter of the hollow shaft being 1.5 times the internal diameter.

6.
a) Define the terms
i. Circumferential stress
ii. Longitudinal stress and derive the expressions for the same in thin
cylinders.
b) A cylindrical shell 3m long has 1m internal diameter and 15mm metal
thickness. Calculate the circumferential and longitudinal stresses induced
and find out the changes in the dimensions of the shell, if it is subjected to
an internal pressure of 1.5 N/mm2. Also find out the maximum shear stress.
Take E = 2 X 105 N/mm2, µ = 0.3.
7.
a) State and explain Euler’s theory of short columns. List the assumptions
made therein.
b) A hollow cast iron column whose outside diameter is 200 mm and has a
thickness of 20 mm is 4.5 m long and is fixed at both ends. Calculate the
safe load by Rankine’s formulae using a factor of safety of 2.5. Find the
ratio of Euler’s to Rankine’s loads. Take fc=550 N/mm2 and Rankine’s
constant ‘a’ = 1/1600.
8.
Write short notes on(any four):
i. Composite section
ii. Thin spherical shells
iii. Mohr’s circle of stresses
iv. Slenderness ratio of Columns
v. Hook’s Law
vi. Stress Strain curve for Mild Steel
