Enos’ “So It Goes” opens the program
in a full-company work set to music by
the King’s Singers, Lera Auerbach and
Johannes Brahms. The piece explores
the built-in need for human connections
and the ramifications of finding them
and sometimes losing them.
Especially relevant to the night’s
theme is “Worlds of Wonder,” a popular
encore from last year with music by
Kevin MacLeod. This full ensemble
piece plays with the transporting power
of film and its capacity to open the world
of fantasy.
Also on the program is Enos’ “Blue
Footed Boobies” after scenes in a
National Geographic documentary. The
trainee students perform two works: an
excerpt from Autumn Eckman’s
“Umbra” with music by Helm and Djin
and “Yellow” choreographed by Samuel
Asher Kunzman. “Yellow” is inspired by
the film adaptations of the early feminist
writings of Charlotte Perkins Gilman,
particularly one referring to an enclosed,
isolated room lined in yellow wallpaper.
Saint Louis Ballet
No theme is closer to the heart in
dance than romance, and no one does
Valentine’s Day romance better than
Saint Louis Ballet in its annual February
concerts. This year, “Love Stories”
features short contemporary ballet
selections by nationally celebrated
choreographers as well as the company’s
head, Gen Horiuchi, formerly a lead
dancer with New York City Ballet.
Performances are at the University
of Missouri-St. Louis’s Touhill
Performing Arts Center at 8 p.m. on
Saturday, Feb. 10 and 2:30 p.m. on
Sunday, Feb. 11.
Three couples will dance the
premiere of “Fasi d’Amore” by Nilas
Martins, a former NYCB principal
dancer. He created this work specifically
for Saint Louis Ballet, based on his
longer piece “Puccini Songs.”
Performing live will be vocalists Gina
Galati and Scott Kennebeck with pianist
Kimberly Werner.
Horiuchi presents a world premiere
of an as-yet-untitled, full-company
piece set to local composer Barbara

Mahdaviani, former NYCB ballerina, is
a pas de deux set to George Gershwin’s
“Three Preludes.” Another pas de deux
set to Ravel music is titled “In G Major.”
