ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr Salmah Zakaria, Economic Affairs Officer, Water Security Section, Environmental and Development Division, UNESCAP
Bangkok, continues to promote the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) concept. Amongst her other distinguished
positions, Dr Salmah is also a member of the Steering Group on the Water Knowledge Hub for Climate Change Adaptation
(WKHCCA) for the Asia Pacific Water Forum/Asian Development Bank (APWF/ADB), a member of the Scientific Advisory Group on
the UNEP Water Program and a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences, Malaysia. Dr Salmah is currently one of the few Lead Authors,
from Southeast Asia, in the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report of Extreme Conditions (IPCC SREX).

Prior to moving to UNESCAP, Dr Salmah was the Director General of NAHRIM. She helped to restructure and develop NAHRIM into
one of the more prominent water research institutes in Southeast Asia as well as steered it to be one of the 12 Regional Water
Knowledge Hubs (WKH) for the Asia Pacific Water Forum (APWF). One of her earlier research projects in NAHRIM was the dynamic
downscaling of the impact of Climate Change on water resources for Peninsula Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.

Much earlier Dr Salmah held several senior positions in the Department of Drainage and Irrigation Malaysia, an implementing
agency responsible for flood, agriculture, water and coastal water management.

Working with international water non governmental organisations (NGOs), she facilitated the setting up of the Malaysian Water
