Continuous Community Net distribution

TESO NORTH

Introduction on the
County and the project TESO SOUTH

K
enya has embraced various methods of
prevention of malaria through vector control
among others. They include Indoor Residual
Spraying and use of LLINs. The revised malaria BUSIA
control strategy 2009 - 2018 identifies three
channels of bed net distribution namely; Mass Net
distribution, Routine and Social marketing.
SAMIA
Ministry of Health through Malaria Control Unit and support
from USAID/PMI is testing the feasibility of an alternative to the
resource heavy mass net distribution which is conducted every
three years. This will involve continuous distribution of nets
through community channels and is taking place in Samia sub
county in Busia county. The objective of the pilot is to establish
feasability of sustaining universal coverage (1 net per every 2 BUNYALA
people) and in the process compare the cost of distribution per
net of this alternative channel with mass net distribution. This
is a pilot that began in December 2013 and will run through
July 2015.

Sensitization
and Trainings:
For purposes of ownership and in-depth understanding sensitization
meetings were conducted at national (VCTWG), County and Sub-
county level and trainings Targeting the CHEWs (Community
Health Extension Workers) and TWG (Technical Working Group)
as ToT (Trainer of Trainees) Were conducted and cascaded to
208 CHVs (Community Health Volunteers). They were trained
on key aspects of the pilot that include Household registration,
quantification and the process of identifying a viable net based on
when was obtained and the condition of net at household and the
size of the holes as per WHO guidelines. They were also trained on
ETL (Education through Learning) and net patching.

After the training, the CHVs conducted social mobilization within

their CHUs (Community Health Units) for purposes of household
registration.

Household
Registration and
Net quantification
The CHVs visited all the HH within their CHUs and
registered the household members and recorded the
condition of the nets. This information was used to
calculate the net need per household.

Branding and marking

of nets for tracking
The nets to be distributed in the pilot project were procured
through a grant from USAID/PMI Nets in this pilot were
branded for ease of tracking and distinguish them from
routine distribution.

Transportation of Nets
Transportation of nets in this pilot to the respective distribution
points leveraged on the existing quarterly routine net
transportation system.

House Hold visits

by CHVs and Voucher
issuance
Based on calculated net need, the CHVs visited HH within their
CHUs, issued vouchers (1 voucher was equivalent to 1 net). and
patched nets that required repair. To ensure the messages
reach all the targeted households, the CHVs employ IPC
through ETL both during door to door visits as well as small
group sessions where barriers to net use are discussed and
actions agreed upon.

Novel Nafula: Since I

started sleeping under a treated
mosquito net i no longer miss classes
due to sickness. When i grow up i would
like to be a teacher and educate
people on health areas.

Rebecca Isenjia: I was

given a mosquito net at the clinic
before I gave birth to my child. We use the
net effectively and as a result we have not
suffered from Malaria. I will continue
using the net during all seasons
both dry and wet seasons.

Dr. Waqo: We want

to focus on eradicating Malaria
in Kenya because it is possible. We
encourage people to sleep under nets
because this is one of the most
effective ways of eradicating
Malaria.
