Notes for Admitted Graduate Students in Master and PhD Programs

1. Course requirement:
(1) Master students are required to take and pass at least two of the following four
core courses: Transport Phenomena (I), Transport Phenomena (II), Advanced
Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, and Advanced Chemical Engineering
Kinetics.
(2) Since the academic year of 1999, ChE Department provides PhD program in
two categories: Category A for the students whose major is Chemical
Engineering and Category B for Chemistry or Applied Chemistry major.
Please refer to “Regulations of PhD Program (Attachment I)” for the PhD
course requirement.

2. Advisor:
Graduate students may choose their advisors before enrollment with mutual
consent between professor and student. A singed Advisor Consent Form should be
submitted to the Department office.

3. PhD qualify exam:


(1) Qualify exam is held twice a year in May and December.
(2) Please refer to Attachment I for the regulations of PhD qualify exam. PhD
students must pass qualify exam within one and a half years after enrollment.
Otherwise, they will be expelled from school. Master students are encouraged
to take qualify exam.
(3) The passing grade points for qualify exam are determined in the Meeting of
Department Affairs. The results of the exam will be notified individually.
(4) Graduate students may take qualify exam during suspension of study, but are
not allowed to take the exam for more than thrice in total.
(5) If a Master student is admitted to PhD program within five years after passing
the qualify exam, the record is still valid.
(6) Master students may bypass MS degree and apply for entering PhD program
after one academic year, if he/she has passed qualify exam or has outstanding
academic records. Please refer to Guideline for Transferring from Master to
PhD (fast-tracking) program for detailed regulations.

4. Graduation:
(1) Students should complete their MS study within 1 to 4 years and PhD study
within 2 to 7 years.
(2) Master degree is awarded when the following requirements are met:
a. Accumulate 24 credits of graduate level courses, including two core
courses and seminars (zero credit) for 2 semesters.
b. Pass the thesis defense.
(3) PhD degree is awarded when the following requirements are met:
a. Accumulate 18 credits of graduate level courses after MS degree. Two
core courses and seminars (zero credit) for 6 semesters should be included
in his/her graduate (MS or PhD) academic record.
b. Pass the qualify exam.
c. Be approved after the qualification review.
d. Pass the thesis defense.

5. Part-time jobs:
Graduate students are not allowed to take part-time jobs without permission.
