Perception- set of process by which an individual become aware of and interprets information about the

environment.

2 Basic Perceptual Processes

Selective Perception

- A process of screening out information that we are uncomfortable with or that


contradicts our belief.
- It is beneficial because it allows us to disregard minor bits of information
- Perceptual process in which a person only receives what we desires to and set
aside or ignores other perception or view points.
- Biological factors such as gender, age, race may also affect selective perception
- An individual’s needs, expectations and emotional stataes have heavy influences
on what he or she “chooses” to perceive.

Stereotyping

- Categorizing or labeling people on the basis of a single attribute


- Are assumptions made about a group of people and are applied to individuals
irrespective of theirnpersonal characteristics because of their affiliation with a
certain group.

Attribution Theory

- Suggest that we observe behavior an then attribute causes to it

Consensus

- The extent to which other people in the same situation behave in the same way

Consistency

- The degree to which the same person behaves in the same way at different
types.

Distinctiveness

- The extent to which the same person behaves in the same way at different
types
- The extent to which the same person behaves in the same way in other
circumstances
Workplace behavior

- Pattern of action by the members of an organization that directly or indirectly


influences the organization’s effectiveness

Performance behavior

- The total set of work-related behaviors that the organization expects the
individual to display

Dysfunctional Behaviors

- Those that detract from, rather than contribute to organizational performance

Behavior

- The way a person or animal acts or behaves

Absenteeism

- Occurs when an employee does not show for work

Turn over

- Occurs when people quit their jobs
