Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering Year 2017-18

Level 3 CE3003 Steel and Concrete Design

Coursework Title: Building Information Modelling

Surname: Forename:

Aims

During the delivery of this coursework students will gain an understanding of the im-

portance of establishing a framework to develop and share Building Information in a

structured format. This collaboration will be based on industry best practice and will

follow BS1192 and PAS 1192 standards. It is also intended that students will adopt a

robust methodology to the 3D structuring and classification of information to support

the project lifecycle.

Assignment
This assignment requires you to assume the role of Project Information Manager to
support the planning, design and construction of a BIM Level 2 Project.

 Client CinemaPlus has approached you to submit a tender for the management of
Building Information Management (BIM) on a small metro cinema project.
 The project team will follow the RIBA Plan of Work to develop and submit a planning
application and if successful will develop from design to construction and then opera-
tion and maintenance. However, your tender focuses on RIBA Stage 2 – Concept
Design.

 You will lead the BIM approach, working to BIM Maturity Level 2 and will adhere to
BS1192 and PAS1192-2 industry standards
 RIBA Plan of Work provides a framework for the project team to approach design,
construction and operational processes in the UK.
 Your brief requires you to provide the following four deliverables:

Your deliverables to support this BIM project areas follows:

1) Pre-contract BIM Execution Plan (25%)
2) Programme (25%) – Create a programme to sup-
port the project team. This should illustrate the sequencing of the key project
information, broken down by discipline and activities related to the concept de-
sign of the project. This Chart should reflect how information will build-up and
be handed over during the early lifecycle. Any significant “data drops” should
be included. It is recommended that a simple Model Production Delivery Ta-
ble (MPDT) support this section of the assignment. Clearly establish a link
between the drawing and sequence of the key elements. Clarity is important.

Additional Notes

1) Please produce all content on 2 A3 Sheets

2) Print the Sheets to PDF

3) Both A3 sheets should be clear, concise and legible.

4) The drawing content should be clearly labelled, and references between all content

should be and should be well established.

5) The first drawing (sheet A) should contain a 3D view of your model. It does not need

to contain plans, elevations or section views.

6) The 3d view should use the space efficiently.

7) The drawing will benefit from a clear and well labelled grid system to support the

co-ordination and setting out of the project.

8) The drawing should use appropriate labels to support the identification of primary

elements contained within the drawing.

9) Careful consideration should be given to the positioning and spacing of these at-

tribute labels to avoid obscuring content.

10) The second A3 sheet should contain the tables or schedules.

11) Classification should be based on Uniclass 2015 and include entities and products

as a minimum. The primary purpose of classification is to group and structure asset

content in a hierarchial structure to an agreed standard.

12) To limit work load and reduce complexity this model is clearly identified as being

required for concept design to enable the design team to commence preliminary

design work. It will therefore require a Low level of definition/detail (LoD) and Low

level of Information (LoI)

All models must adhere to the following guidelines:

1. The project number can be your student identification number

3
2. Use BS1192:2007 Layers organised by engineering discipline

3. Adopt Uniclass 2015 to classify asset content

4. Students will use Autocad to create their models.

The federated model will comprise models from the following engineering disciplines:-

 Architecture Grid, Simple Doorway and Ceiling Element

 Structure Foundation, Columns, walls

 Utilities Screen, Lighting

Discipline Content – All named to Uniclass 2015

Asset data could compromise details such as dimension size, material, role/owner,

maintenance requirements etc.

1. Assessment and marking criteria

Your submission will be assessed with respect to establishing a clear presen-

tation of information and defining the relationship between the model the data.

Submission of your work will be via online through Blackboard / WiseFlow.
