‘Whosoever repenteth sincerely after his wrong-doing and amendeth, God will
relent towards him.’ …. (5:39), ‘Despair not of the mercy of God, Who forgiveth
all sins. He is the Forgiving, the Merciful’ … (39:53). These two verses of the
Glorious Qur-an are sufficient for the human species to bow in repentance and
supplicate for the wrong-doings and calling for His Mercy.
Let us read a verse translated by Edward Fitzgerad – FROM ‘THE RUBAIYAT
OF UMAR KHAYYAM’:
“The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a line,
Nor all your Tears wash out a word of it”.
Oscar Wild observed, “It is not the priest but the confession that grants
absolution”. But if any thing that can wash the adverse writing or the grant of
absolution it is suppliant’s supplicate or prayer or call. The servants of God, call
upon Him for His mercy in all the earthly matters and that of the Hereafter too.
Bhadur Shah Zafar said: “O Zafar! Do not consider him a human being, however
he may otherwise be, who does not remember God in affluence or who does not
fear God when his passion is aroused”. In the face of His infinite Mercy, the
question of human reflexive fear that his supplicate may be left unheeded, pales
into insignificance. One should have full trust in the Lord.
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said that a faithful shouldn’t be disappointed if his
prayer is not answered. There would be some good for him if his prayer is not
responded. He has further added that for a momin (faith-ful) supplication is just
like a “weapon”. It is one of the column of faith. It is the light of the earth and
heavens. According to him, keep on calling upon God and never be tired of this
practice. Never mind if your supplication is not answered in this world, be sure
you will be rewarded for your prayers in the Hereafter.
In the Holy Scripture three (03) types of sublime supplications are referred:
 Those which were revealed by the Sovereign Lord Himself to His
Apostle. These prayers are ordered by the Almighty with the word
“Say”.
 Those calls which were prayed by His apostles. These calls begin
with the words “O my Lord!”
 All those prayers of His faithful servants at the time of distress,
begging His mercy.
All this should make clear to the discern reader that these prayers do
sublimate the gentle prayerer. Indeed, the prayer erupting out of the inner strata
of the heart sublimates the caller and injects tears to the eyes. Certainly, where
water flows vegetation germinates. On the same analogy where tears flow, the
Divine Mercy manifests itself. As such, no doubt, the Last Divine Scripture in its
own unique way has provided humanity with the ‘Ideal’ with which human
destiny is linked with the Divine, and help to lead us on to it. For further
elucidation of the point, a couplet (translated) from Persian and Sindhi mystic
poets, Rumi and Shah, respectively are quoted:
“Shed tears profusely in prostration,
And appeal to Allah to free you from all bad thoughts”.
“I do not covet any thing in the universe except Allah.
I request Him for His nearness”.
The object of the authors of this humble volume is very definite one.
They desire above all things that those of us who are not much conversant with
Arabic, may have some further reading material. As the title of the book
suggests, we have tried to compile the prayes given in the Divine Scripture with
their English translation and a sketchy background of the prayers and some
further details, as shown in the contents of the volume. Assuredly, this collection
is intended as a ‘life-companion’ for those who are supplicants of the Divine
Mercy before passing on to the Great Unknown. Gentle reader, the authors are
conscious that the knowledge penned down is only the proverbial tip of the
iceberg. Certainly, this write-up is not a result of some morbid after-thought. It
takes tremenhdous temerity to put pen to paper with the intention of sharing
whatever little knowledge the authors have. Nevertheless, it is true that study of
God’s Word, for the purpose of discovering God’s Will, is a vast sacred
discipline.
Be sure that unless one comes with reverence, nothing shall be open to
him. We may supplicate as our supplication goes but it is only a cat playing with
a book – signifying nothing. Cry of “earthly” and the love of “heavenly” are on
the same plane – forgetting this life to meet the Eternal”. This reminds us of the
beautiful lines of Zeb-un-Nissa:
“ My heart is glad whenever lover-wise
I dwell upon Thy Beauties and Thy Grace!
But how can I content my hungry eyes,
That ask continually to see Thy Face”.
The suppliant is in the ambiance of spiritual environment – a pinnacle of
mannerism, realism, objectivity and scintillating love. He is face to face with the
Supreme Creator – His vicegerent on earth. The divine door is now open to the
suppliant for his redemption and supplications. Holy Prophet (pbuh) said: A
sincere repenter of faults is like who hath committed none. However, what lies
behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within
us. It is paradoxical but profoundly true and important that the most likely way
to reach a goal is to be aiming not at that goal itself, but at some more ambitious
goal beyond it. Regrettably, the short span of time-period we are given to live
and love in the world; we spend too much time loving things instead of people.
This is a truth, and truth like surgery may hurt, but it cures. This gave rise to the
idea of this writing. But then: How we consider ourselves to be able to perform
such a task? We reminded ourselves the words of Mother Theresa: “God doesn’t
require us to succeed; He only requires that you try”. On such a state of mind,
Goethe said: “To be pleased with one’s limits is a wretched state”. “The Majestic
Qur’anic Prayers” is aimed for every earnest and reverent faithful who wishes to
invite mercy from his Lord for his salvation. Indeed: “Blessed are those whose
transgressions are forgiven. Whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose
sins the Lord will never count against him”. (Bible: \Romans 4 : 6 – 7). Let us
wind our discourse by a small fact buit carries a wider meaning reflecting on the
writing in hand: “The bee is more honoured than other creatures, not because she
labours, but because she labours for others” …….. St. Chrysotom.
The book has been dedicated to Shaheed-e-Jamhoriat, Mohtarma Benazir
Bhutto. She was an ardent advocate for democracy, human rights and rule of law
in Pakistan and carried out her untiring efforts for the most vulnerable sections
of society, particularly women, children and minority rights. A role model for the
nation, she was a writer, philosopher, politician, sister, mother and wife, a
symbol of progress, a source of hope and a vision of strength – all at one time.
She suffered many privations for her believes, her governments were
undermined by rogue elements within the establishment at the time. Nation
mourned BB’s assassination on 27th December, 2007 after she had addressed a
public meeting at Rawalpindi, Pakistan. She received a galaxy of national and
international awards in her life-time, for her services to the humanity.
Posthumously, United Nations recognising her services, conferred on Mohtarma
the HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD – 2008 Thus her martyrdom has left behind an
immortal Monument of Memory on the sand of time and her legacy will live
forever as a beacon of light for humanity.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

This writing has been gleaned from various Quranic literature. It is more work of
reflection, than a work of research or eradication. For the same reason, it has not
been thought necessary to burden the book with a comprehensive bibliography
or to make reference by footnotes to the authors’ sources of information.

For the English rendering of the cosmic verses from the Al-Qur’an-ul-Mobeen,
the authors have depended largely upon the explanatory translation of Allama
Abdullah Yusuf Ali (Ed. 1937 – ’38). Nevertheless, work of Markmaduke
Pickthal, Allama Abdul Majid Daryabadi (English), Agaha Mohammad Yakoob
(English), Allama Ibn Kasir (Urdu), Moulana Feteh Mohammad Jalandhri
(Urdu), Allama Abdul Waheed Sarhandi (Sindhi), Moulana Moudodi (Urdu),
were referred. However, we are posthumously grateful to Late Mr. Abubakar
Bhatti (uncle and father-in-law and her father) whose vast collection of books on
different related topics and the known languages, were a great source of
knowledge towards compiling of this book. May God bless them all!

Nevertheless, the authors are deeply indebted to Mr. Khalid Hussain Bhatti and
Mrs Farzana Khalid for their labourious task of typing the manuscript and their
valuable suggestions on the text. May God recompense them!

Finally the authors are highly indebted to their children – Advocate Ghazala, Dr.
Fariha, Engr Masroor and Mrs Moomal Masroor – for providing relevant
material and helping in the writing of the manuscript. May God bless them! A
verse (translated), of Waseem Soomro reflects our sentiments:

Your embrace is my dress,

My heart is sorrow full without you
My family members are like the stars
How lovely are family members!.

In the end the authors or rather the compilers of this writing, express their
gratitude’s to many learned well-wishers at Mehran University of Engineering
and Technology, Jamshoro and at University of Sindh, Jamshoro, whose constant
advices and encouragements made this book a reality. May peace be upon them!
Righty, Socrates once said that “his wisdom was limited to an awareness of his
own ignorance” – this rightly applies to the authors also!

MAJISTIC QUR-ANIC PRAYERS

God, there is no God but Him, the Living,

Self-Subsisting, the Eternal. …. (2 : 3)

Glory to Him, the Most High, full of Grace and Mercy. Glorify Him day and
night; in truth, reverence and purity of mind. Metaphorically speaking, the spirit
of supplication lies when the suppliant’s individual self is lost, imbued in an
“universal self”. That ecstasy offers the only means by which soul directly
communicates and becomes united with the “Unseen Omnipotent”. At this stage,
his universal self is “metaphysical”on one hand and “mystic” on the other. Both
these states are a bit similar as both own reflective and contemplative minds. The
link, being not a “logical” but “psychological”. He is now in the divine company
of the distant “Object” – widely separated in space by his quick flight of
imagination and form; and holds fast His analogies with a vaster grasp. Here
comes true the dictum of Publo Picasso: Everything you can imagine is real.
Thus the supplicant is before the “Reality” He is now on earth and now in
heavens. There is no insuperable barrier in between. He recognizes the love of
the “Hidden” and the love of the “Manifest”, but “Hidden” and “Manifest” are
the same “One Object”. He now only requires the latitude of expression for his
supplication. The Omniscience is to be supplicantly addressed with mysticism,
reality of Unity and accordance to His universal Will and Law. The supplicant
should be conscious about His Ubiquity all the time. No body can deny or ignore
the fact that the miraculous Qur’anic Prayers are the paragons of virtues, many
spendoured gems, embellished by many spiritual colours, and marked by
stretches altenating between twinkling light and soft shadows. Looking through a
spiritual prism these sublime supplicates are the human aspirations to invoke His
mercy and guidance. He is All-Seeing, All-Hearing, Abolute One and only One:
“Call on Me; I will answer your Prayers”. – says the Soveriegn Lord. As a
Yogoslav maxim proclaims: “Complain to one who can help you”. God is the
One Who helps His servants. Be sure that your call will be an antidote against
human distress, misery or agony. A reflection reads: The Book of God teaches
you how to seek help of God and not to beg of your fellow beings. – Hazrat Ali
(A.S.).
