The real worth of man lies in his deeds, and not his

physical body. As human beings, all are equal although they may
have different colour and religion and may belong to different
culture, race and cast. This is the basic principle of the Islamic
social system. Salvation can be attained only by faith in God and
by doing good deeds. Nevertheless, Islamic values are based on
truth, honesty and respect of humanity. The standard of morality
and ethical principles are comprehensively commended in the
Quranic verses. In fact, in their creation as human beings all men
stand on the same footing and are given equal opportunities and
facilities to develop their individuality and to attain their
salvation. This lies in the Divine likes, dislikes and the majestic
virtues – patience, tolerance, deeds of goodness. Man, according
to the Quran is made in best of the moulds: “We have indeed
created man in the best of moulds” – (Tin: 4). But in order to
fulfill his high destiny he was given free-will to a limited extent.
The wrong use of this free will makes his nature weak: “God doth
wish to lighten your (difficulties) for man was created weak (in
flesh)” – (Nissa : 28) or hasty: “The prayer that man should make
for good, he maketh for evil; for man is given to hasty (deeds)” –
(Bani Israil : 11) or impatient, as: “Truly man was created very
impatient” – (Maarij : 19). That becomes his nature by his own
act, but he is spoken of as so created because of the capacities
given to him in his creation. The Quran says:

And spend of your substance

In the cause of God,
And make not your own hands
Contribute to your destruction;
But do good;
For God loveth those
Who do good. (Baqra : 195)

32
They ask thee
Concerning women’s courses.
Say: They are
A hurt and a pollution:
So keep away from women
In their courses, and do not
Approach them until
They are clean.
But when they have purified themselves,
Ye may approach them
In any manner, time or place
Ordained for you by God.
For God loves those
Who turn to Him constantly
And He loves those
Who keep themselves pure and clean. (Baqra : 222)

Nay – Those that keep

Their plighted faith
And act aright, – verily
God loves those
Who act aright (Al-i-Imran : 76)

And God gave them

A Reward in this world,
And the excellent reward
Of the Hereafter. For God
Loveth those who do good. (Al-i-Imran : 148)

But because of their breach

Of their Covenant, We
Cursed them, and made
Their hearts grow hard:

33
They change the words
From their (right) places
And forget a good part
Of the Message that was
Sent them, nor wilt thou
Cease to find them –
Barring a few – ever
Bent on (new) deceits:
But forgive them, and overlook
(Their misdeeds): for God
Loveth those who are kind. (Maida : 14)

(They are fond of) listening

To falsehood, of devouring
Anything forbidden.
If they come to thee,
Either judge between them,
Or decline to interfere.
If thou decline, they cannot
Hurt thee in the least.
If thou judge, judge
In equity between them.
For God loveth those
Who judge in equity. (Maida : 45)

On those who believe

And do deeds of righteousness
There is no blame
For what they eat,
When they guard themselves
From evil, and believe,
And do deeds of righteousness, –
(Or) again, guard themselves

34
From evil and believe, –
(Or) again, guard themselves
From evil and do good.
For God loveth those
Who do good. (Maida : 96)

The number of months

In the sight of God
Is twelve (in a year) –
So ordained by Him
The day He created
The heavens and the earth;
Of them (four are sacred;
That is the straight usage.
So wrong not yourselves
Therein, and fight the Pagans
All together as they
Fight you all together.
But know that God
Is with those who restrain
Themselves. (Tauba : 36)

Do no mischief on the earth,

After it hath been
Set in order, but call
On Him with fear
And longing (in your hearts):
For the Mercy of God
Is (always) near
To those who do right. (Araf : 56)

(But the treaties are) not dissolved

With those Pagans with whom

35
Ye have entered into alliance
And who have not subsequently
Failed you in aught,
Nor aided any one against you.
So fulfill your engagements
With them to the end
Of their term: for God
Loveth the righteous. (Tauba : 4)

For God suffereth not

The reward to be lost
Of those who do good; (Tauba : 120)

It is part of the Mercy

Of God that thou dost deal
Gently with them.
Wert thou severe
Or harsh – hearted,
They would have broken away
From thee : so pass over
(Their faults), and ask
For God’s forgiveness
For them; and consult
Them in affairs (of moment).
Then, when thou hast
Taken a decision,
Put thy trust in God.
For God loves those
Who put their trust (in Him). (Al-i-Imran : 159)

And those who strive

In Our (Cause),– We will
Certainly guide them

36
To Our Paths:
For verily God
Is with those
Who do right. (Ankabut : 69)

Say: “If ye do love God,

Follow me: God will love you
And forgive you your sins:
For God is Oft – Forgiving,
Most Merciful”. (Al-i-Imran : 31)

Truly God loves those

Who fight in His Cause
In battle array, as if
They were a solid
Cemented structure (Saff : 4)

Then do ye remember
Me; I will remember
You. Be grateful to Me,
And reject not Faith. (Baqra : 152)

Oh ye who believe! Fight

The Unbelievers who gird you about,
And let them find firmness
In you: and know that God
Is with those who fear Him. (Tauba : 123)

In order that ye may

Not despair over matters
That pass you by,
Nor exult over favours
Bestowed upon you.

37
For God loveth not
Any vainglorious boaster,– (Hadid :23)

O ye who believe!
Let not some men
Among you laugh at others:
It may be that
The (latter) are better
Than the (former):
Nor let some women
Laugh at others:
It may be that
The (latter) are better
Than the (former):
Nor defame nor be
Sarcastic to each other,
Nor call each other
By (offensive) nicknames:
Ill-seeming is a name
Connoting wickedness,
(To be used of one)
After he has believed:
And those who
Do not desist are
(Indeed) doing wrong.

O ye who believe!
Avoid suspicion as much
(As possible): for suspicion
In some cases is a sin:
And spy not on each other,
Nor speak ill of each other
Behind their backs. Would any

38
Of you like to eat
The flesh of his dead
Brother? Nay, ye would
Abhor it. But fear God:
For God is Oft-Returning,
Most Merciful. (Hujrat : 11 – 12)

God loveth not that evil

Should be noised abroad
In public speech, except
Where injustice hath been
Done; for God
Is He who heareth
And knoweth all things (Nisaa : 148)

And remember, Moses said

To his people:”O my people!
Why do ye vex and insult
Me, though ye know
That I am the apostle
Of God (sent) to you?”
Then when they went wrong,
God let their hearts go wrong.
For God guides not those
Who are rebellious transgressors (Saff : 5)

And God loveth not

Those who do mischief. (Maida : 67)

and God
Guides not the rebellious. (Tauba : 24)

And God guides not

39
Those who do wrong. (Tauba : 19)

When they had had their throw,

Moses said:”What ye
Have brought in sorcery:
God will surely make it
Of no effect: for God
Prospereth not the work
Of those who make mischief. (Yunis : 81)

But God guideth not

Those who reject Faith. (Tauba : 37)

Verily God loveth not

Any that is a traitor
To faith, or shows ingratitude. (Hajj : 38)

Verily He loveth not the arrogant. (Nahl : 23)

------- But waste not

By excess : for God
Loveth not the wasters. (Anam : 141)

Is it not to God
That sincere devotion
Is due? But those who
Take for protectors others
Than God (say): “We only
Serve them in order that
They may bring us nearer
To God.” Truly God
Will judge between them
In that wherein they differ.

40
But God guides not
Such as are false
And ungrateful. (Zumar : 3)

God guides not one

Who transgresses and lies! (Mumin : 28)

God forgiveth not

(The sin of) joining other gods
With Him; but He forgiveth
Whom He pleaseth other sins
Than this: one who joins
Other gods with God,
Hath strayed far, far away
(From the right). (Nissa : 116)

Say : “Obey God

And His Apostle”:
But if they turn back,
God loveth not those
Who reject Faith. (Al-i-Imran : 32)

Those who believe,

Then reject Faith,
Then believe (again)
And (again) reject Faith,
And go on increasing
In Unbelief, – God
Will not forgive them
Nor guide them on the Way. (Nisaa : 137)

Oh ye who believe! seek help

With patient Perseverance

41
And Prayer: for God is with those
Who patiently persevere.

And say not of those

Who are slain in the way
Of God: “They are dead”.
Nay, they are living,
Though ye perceive (them) not.

Be sure we shall test you

With something of fear
And hunger, some loss
In goods or lives or the fruits
(Of your toil), but give
Glad tidings to those
Who patiently persevere, –

Who say, when afflicted

With calamity: “To God
We belong, and to Him
Is our return”:

They are those on whom

(Descent) blessings from God,
Any Mercy,
And they are the ones
That receive guidance. (Baqra : 153 – 157)

And put thy trust

In Him Who lives
And dies not; and celebrate
His praise; and enough is He
To be acquainted with

42
The faults of His servants; – (Furqan : 58)

And the servants of (God)

Most Gracious are those
Who walk on the earth
In humility, and when the ignorant
Address them, they say,
“Peace!”; (Furqan : 63)

But those who believe

And do deeds of righteousness, –
We shall soon admit them
To Gardens, with rivers
Flowing beneath, – to dwell
Therein for ever.
God’s promise is the truth,
And whose word can be
Truer than God’s? (Nisaa : 122)

If any do deeds
Of righteousness, –
Be they male or female –
And have faith,
They will enter Heaven,
And not the least injustice
Will be done to them. (Nisaa : 124)

Who can be better

In religion than one
Who submits his whole self
To God, does good,
And follows the way
Of Abraham the true in faith?

43
For God did take
Abraham for a friend (Nisaa : 125)

And establish regular prayers

At the two ends of the day
And at the approaches of the night:
For those things that are good
Remove those that are evil:
Be that the word of remembrance
To those who remember (their Lord):

And be steadfast in patience:

For verily God will not suffer
The reward of the righteous
To perish (Hud : 114 – 115)

He Who created Death

And Life, that He
May try which of you
Is best in deed:
And He is the Exalted
In Might, Oft-Forgiving; – (Mulk : 2)

Those who desire

The life of the Present
And its glitter, – to them
We shall pay (the price
Of) their deeds therein, –
Without diminution.

They are those for whom

There is nothing in the Hereafter
But the fire: vain

44
Are the designs they frame therein,
And of no effect
Are the deeds that they do! (Hud : 15, 16)

So wait with patience

For the Command
Of thy Lord, and be not
Like the Companion
Of the Fish, – when he
Cried out in agony.

Had not Grace

From his Lord
Reached him, he
Would indeed have been
Cast off on the naked
Shore, in disgrace. (Qalam : 48, 49)

It is not righteousness
That ye turn your faces
Towards East or West;
But it is righteousness –
To believe in God
And the Last Day,
And the Angels,
And the Book,
And the Messengers;
To spend of your substance,
Out of love for Him,
For your kin,
For orphans,
For the needy,
For the wayfarer,

45
For those who ask,
And for the ransom of slaves;
To be steadfast in prayer,
And practice regular charity;
To fulfill the contracts
Which ye have made;
And to be firm and patient,
In pain (or suffering)
And adversity,
And throughout
All periods of panic.
Such are the people
Of truth, the God-fearing. (Baqra : 177)

That Home of the Hereafter

We shall give to those
Who intend not high-handedness
Or mischief on earth:
And the End is (best)
For the righteous.

If any does good, the reward

To him is better than
His deed; but if any
Does evil, the doers of evil
Are only punished (to the extent)
Of their deeds. (Qasas: 83, 84)

Those who patiently preserve,

Seeking the countenance of their Lord;
Establish regular prayers; spend,
Out of (the gifts) We have bestowed
For their sustenance, secretly

46
And openly; and turn off Evil
With good : for such is
The final attainment
Of the (Eternal) Home, – (Rad : 22)

Oh ye who believe!
Persevere in patience
And constancy; vie
In such perseverance;
Strengthen each other;
And fear God;
That ye may prosper. (Al-i-Imran : 200)

And thy garments

Keep free from stain!

And all abomination shun!

Nor expect, in giving,

Any increase (for thyself)!

But for thy Lord’s (Cause),

Be patient and constant! (Muddaththir : 4-7)

To each one is a degree

According to the deeds
Which he doth: for thy Lord
Is not unmindful
Of anything they do. (Anam : 132)

And to all
Are (assigned) degrees
According to the deeds

47
Which they (have done),
And in order that (God)
May recompense their deeds,
And no injustice be done
To them. (Ahqaf : 19)

For those who believe

And do righteous deeds,
Will be in Gardens,
Beneath which Rivers flow:
That is the great Salvation,
(The fulfillment of all desires), (Buruj : 11)

All that they do

Is noted in (their)
Books (of Deeds)

Every matter small and great,

Is on record.

As to the Righteous,
They will be in the midst
Of Gardens and Rivers,

In an Assembly of Truth,
In the Presence of
A Sovereign Omnipotent. (Qamar : 52-55)

Those who believe and work

Righteous deeds, – from them
Shall We blot out all evil
(That may be) in them,
And We shall reward

48
Them according to
The best of their deeds. (Ankabut : 7)

And those who believe

And work righteous deeds, –
Them shall We admit
To the company of the Righteous: (Ankabut : 9)

For Muslim men and women, –

For believing men and women,
For devout men and women,
For true men and women,
For men and women who are
Patient and constant, for men
And women who humble themselves,
For men and women who give
In charity, for men and women
Who fast (and deny themselves),
For men and women who
Guard their chastity, and
For men and women who
Engage much in God’s praise, –
For them has God prepared
Forgiveness and great reward. (Ahzab : 35)

If two parties among

The Believers fall into
A quarrel, make ye peace
Between them: but if
One of them transgresses
Beyond bounds against the other,
Then fight ye (all) against
The one that transgresses

49
Until it complies with
The command of God;
But if it complies, then
Make peace between them
With justice, and be fair:
For God loves those
Who are fair (and just).

The Believers are but

A single Brotherhood:
So make peace and
Reconciliation between your
Two (contending) brothers;
And fear God, that ye
May receive Mercy. (Hujrat : 9-10)

How can God’s favours be counted? He bestowed man

with the intelligence, power of expression, capacity to understand
clearly the relations of things and to explain them with the powers
of his given senses. The Quran calls upon humans to make full
use of the faculties of reasoning, understanding, observing and
listening with which the Lord has endowed them. Further, then to
decide for themselves whether the whole universe that surrounds
them has been created in vain or for a definite aim. This habit of
making full and proper use of one’s own faculties and deciding
things for one’s self is the real incentive for all logical,
philosophical and scientific knowledge and research. With equal
emphasis the Quran condemns those who do not use their
faculties. It compares them to mutes who are incapable of making
any scientific progress. Mortals as we are, should not forget that
gratitude is a form of worship.

50
Reading, writing and scientific research holds supreme in
the Quranic teachings. The first five verses of the very first verses
that were revealed to the Prophet, speak of reading and writing.
Thus the use of reading and writing for the purpose of learning
new and unknown sciences marks the advent of the Quran into
the world. The Divine Book says:

Proclaim! (or Read!)

In the name
Of thy Lord and Cherisher,
Who created –

Created man, out of

A (mere) clot
Of congealed blood:

Proclaim! And thy Lord

Is Most Bountiful, –

He Who taught
(The use of) the pen, –

Taught man that

Which he knew not. (Iqraa : 1-5)

Worship none but God;

Treat with kindness
Your parents and kindred,
And orphans and those in need;
Speak fair to the people;
Be steadfast in prayer;
And practise regular charity. (Baqra : 83)

51
O ye who believe!
Fear God, and (always) say
A word directed to the Right: (Ahzab : 70)

Whatever ye say, speak justly,

Even if a near relative
Is concerned; and fulfill
The Covenant of God:
Thus doth He command you,
That ye may remember.

Verily, this is My Way,

Leading straight: follow it:
Follow not (other) paths:
They will scatter you about
From His (great) Path:
Thus doth He command you,
That ye may be righteous. (Anam : 152 – 153)

Oh ye who believe! Fear God

And be with those
Who are true (in word and deed). (Tauba : 119)

Say to My servants
That they should (only) say
Those things that are best:
For Satan doth sow
Dissensions among them:
For Satan is to man
An avowed enemy. (Bani Israil : 53)

O ye who believe!
Why say ye that

52
Which ye do not?

Grievously odious is it
In the sight of God
That ye say that
Which ye do not. (Saff : 2-3)

Kind words
And the covering of faults
Are better than charity
Followed by injury.
God is free of all wants,
And He is Most Forbearing. (Baqra : 263)

Oh ye who believe!
Fulfill (all obligations. (Maida : 1)

Woe to every
(Kind of) scandal-monger
And backbiter, (Humza : 1)

But if at the time of division

Other relatives, or orphans,
Or poor, are present,
Give them something also,
And speak to them
Words of kindness and justice.

Let them fear God, and speak

Words of appropriate (comfort). (Nisaa : 8-9)

“O my son! establish
Regular prayer, enjoin what is

53
Just, and forbid what is wrong:
And bear with patient constancy
What’er betide thee; for this
Is firmness (of purpose)
In (the conduct of) affairs.

“And swell not thy cheek

(For pride) at men,
Nor walk in insolence
Through the earth;
For God loveth not
Any arrogant boaster.

“And be moderate
In thy pace, and lower
Thy voice; for the harshest
Of sounds without doubt
Is the braying of the ass”. (Luqman : 17-19)

And when they hear vain talk,

They turn away therefrom
And say:”To us our deeds,
And to you yours;
Peace be to you: we
Seek not the ignorant”. (Qasas : 55)

Call on your Lord

With humility and in private:
For God loveth not
Those who trespass beyond bounds. (Araf : 55)

When the Quran is read,

Listen to it with attention,

54
And hold your peace:
That ye may receive Mercy.

And do thou (oh reader!)

Bring thy Lord to remembrance
In thy (very) soul,
With humility and in reference,
Without loudness in words,
In the mornings and evenings;
And be not thou
Of those who are unheedful (Araf : 204 – 205)

Oh ye who believe!
Give your response to God
And His Apostle, when He
Calleth you to that which
Will give you life;
And know that God
Cometh in between a man
And his heart, and that
It is He to Whom
Ye shall (all) be gathered. (Anfal : 24)

(God) Most Gracious!

It is He Who has
Taught the Quran.

He has created man:

He has taught him speech

(And intelligence). (Rehman : 1-4)

55
Say: “Call upon God, or
Call upon Rehman:
By whatever name ye call
Upon Him (it is well):
For to Him belong
The Most Beautiful Names.
Neither speak thy Prayer aloud,
Nor speak it in a low tone,
But seek a middle course
Between”. (Bani Israil : 110)

Those who spend (freely),

Whether in prosperity,
Or in adversity;
Who restrain anger,
And pardon (all) men; –
For God loves those
Who do good; – (Al-i-Imran : 134)

The most beautiful names

Belong to God:
So call on Him by them;
But shun such men as
Use profanity in His names:
What they do will soon
Be requited. (Araf : 180)

Do they not travel

Through the land, so that
Their hearts (and minds)
May thus learn wisdom
And their ears may
Thus learn to hear?

56
Truly it is not their eyes
That are blind, but their
Hearts which are
In their breasts. (Hajj : 46)

Oh ye who believe!
Ask not questions
About things which,
If made plain to you,
May cause you trouble
But if ye ask about things
When the Quran is being
Revealed, they will be
Made plain to you.
God will forgive those:
For God is Oft – forgiving,
Most Forbearing. (Maida : 104)

It is He Who has created

For you (the facilities of)
Hearing, sight, feeling
And understanding: little thanks
It is ye give! (Muminun : 78)

Recite what is sent

Of the Book by inspiration
To thee, and establish
Regular Prayer: for Prayer
Restrains from shameful
And unjust deeds;
And remembrance of God
Is the greatest (thing in life)
Without doubt. And God knows

57
The (plans) that ye form. (Ankabut : 45)

and fulfil
(Every) engagement,
For (every) engagement
Will be enquired into
(On the Day of Reckoning) (Bani Israil : 34)

Many are the Jinns and men

We have made for Hell:
They have hearts wherewith they
Understand not, eyes wherewith
They see not, and ears wherewith
They hear not. They are
Like cattle, – nay more
Misguided : for they
Are heedless (of warning). (Araf : 179)

And We had firmly established

Them in a (prosperity and) power
Which we have not given
To you (ye Quraish!)
And We had endowed them
With (faculties of)
Hearing, seeing, heart and intellect:
But of no profit to them
Were their (faculties of)
Hearing, sight, and heart
And intellect, when they
Went on rejecting the Signs
Of God; and they were
(Completely) encircled
By that which they

58
Used to mock at! (Ahqaf : 26)

Those who annoy

God and His Apostle –
God has cursed them
In this world and
In the Hereafter,
And has prepared for them
A humiliating Punishment.

And those who annoy

Believing men and women
Undeservedly, bear (on themselves)
A calumny and a glaring sin. (Ahzab : 57 – 58)

And obey not (the behests)

Of the Unbelievers
And the Hypocrites,
And heed not their annoyances,
But put thy trust in God.
For enough is God
As a Disposer of affairs. (Ahzab : 48)

O ye who believe!
Put not yourself forward
Before God and His Apostle;
But fear God: for God
Is He Who hears
And knows all things.

O ye who believe!
Raise not your voices
Above the voice of the Prophet,

59
Nor speak aloud to him
In talk, as ye may
Speak aloud to one another,
Lest your deeds become
Vain and ye perceive not.

Those that lower their voice

In the presence of
God’s Apostle, – their hearts
Has God tested for piety:
For them is Forgiveness
And a great Reward.

Those who shout out

To thee from without
The Inner Apartments –
Most of them lack understanding.

If only they had patience

Until thou couldst
Come out to them,
It would be best
For them: but God is
Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

O ye who believe!
If a wicked person comes
To you with any news,
Ascertain the truth, lest
Ye harm people unwittingly,
And afterwards become
Full of repentance for
What ye have done. (Hujrat : 1-6)

60
O Consorts of the Prophet!
Ye are not like any
Of the (other) women:
If ye do fear (God),
Be not too complaisant
Of speech, lest one
In whose heart is
A disease should be moved
With desire: but speak ye
A speech (that is) just.

And stay quietly in

Your houses, and make not
A dazzling display, like
That of the former Times
Of Ignorance; and establish
Regular Prayer, and give
Regular Charity; and obey
God and His Apostle.
And God only wishes
To remove all abomination
From you, ye Members
Of the Family, and to make
You pure and spotless.

And recite what is

Rehearsed to you in your
Homes, of the Signs of God
And His Wisdom:
For God understands
The finest mysteries and
Is well-acquainted (with them). (Ahzab : 32 – 34)

61
And pursue not that
Of which thou hast
No knowledge; for
Every act of hearing,
Or of seeing,
Or of (feeling in) the heart
Will be enquired into
(On the Day of Reckoning).

Nor walk on the earth

With insolence: for thou
Canst not rend the earth
Asunder, nor reach
The mountains in height.

Of all such things

The evil is hateful
In the sight of thy Lord.

These are among the (precepts

Of) wisdom, which thy Lord
Has revealed to thee.
Take not, with God,
Another object of worship,
Lest thou shouldst be thrown
Into Hell, blameworthy and rejected. (Bani Israil : 36-39)

Hold to forgiveness;
Command what is right;
But turn away from the ignorant. (Araf : 199)

Say: “Think ye, if God

62
Took away your hearing
And your sight, and sealed up
Your hearts, who – a god
Other than God – could
Restore them to you?”
See how We explain
The Signs by various (symbols);
Yet they turn aside. (Anam : 46)

Let us conclude this chapter with a prayer of Prophet

Moses from the Holy Quran:

He prayed: “O my Lord!
I have indeed wronged my soul!
Do Thou then forgive me!“
So (God) forgave him: for He
Is the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Qasas : 16)

Whatever you have earned is all spurious. You must

discard it and remember God. Remove all satanic
thoughts from your mind. God does not appreciate
them. Generate in your mind full belief in God. If you
do it, God will consider your mission successful.
