1. . The following reaction was carried out: Fe2O3 + 2X ------ 2 Fe + X2O3 .

It was found
that 79.847 g of Fe2O3 reacted with “X” to form 55.847 grams of Fe and 50.982 g of X2O3.
Identify the element X.
2. A combustion device was used to determine the empirical formula of a compound containing
only carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. A 0.6439 g sample of the unknown compound produced
1.603 g CO2, and 0.2810 g of H2O. Determine the empirical formula of the compound.
3. Phosgene gas is probably most famous form being the first toxic gas used offensively in World
War !, but it is also used extensively in the chemical processing of a wide variety of materials.
Phosgene can be made by the catalytic reaction between CO and chlorine gas in the presence of
a carbon catalyst. The chemical reaction is :

CO + Cl2 ----- COCl2

Suppose that you have measured the reaction products from a given reactor and found that they
contained 3moles of chlorine, 10 moles of phosgene, and 7 moles of CO. Calculate a) extent of
reaction, initial amounts of the reactants, fractional conversion of the limiting reactant, % excess
of the excess reactant.

5. FeS can be roasted in O2 to form FeO. : 2 FeS + 3 O2 ----- 2 FeO + 2 SO2

If the slag ( solid product) contains 80% FeO and 20% FeS, and the exit gas is 100% SO2, determine the
extent of reaction and the initial number of moles of FeS. Use 100 g of slag as the basis.
