Design concept and philosophy context of
a local and a foreign newly-known structure
DESIGN CONCEPT
Design concept is an idea behind a design, itself. It is intended to clearly and efficiently
lead your mind to the right direction in formulating your design solutions. (Bradley 2010)
NEWLY-BUILT & KNOWN FOREIGN STRUCTURE
30 ST MARY AXE
London
30 St Mary axe is a 40-storey building in the St, Mary Axe area of London. It became
famously known around the world because it is recognized as one of the most distinctive
skyscrapers in London. The building was designed by famous architect, Norman Foster of the
Foster and Partners Architectural Firm. It is also known as Gherkin.
Design Concept:
The main shape of the tower is actually based from the physical environment of the city.
One of the highest considerations is the smooth flow of the wind around the building. The shape
of the building reduces the need for reinforcement to stiffen the structure and resist wind loads.
Diagonal braces at the perimeter mean the floor space inside the building is free from columns.
Gherkin is essentially an elongated, curved, shaft, with a rounded end that is reminiscent
of a stretched egg. However, despite the shape, the only piece of curved glass is the cap at the
very top.
Foster’s idea of the design was inspired by ideas that were developed in 1970s by
Buckminster Fuller a concept building, the Climatroffice.
