DESIGN CONCEPT

Design concept is an idea behind a design, itself. It is intended to clearly and efficiently
lead your mind to the right direction in formulating your design solutions. (Bradley 2010)
NEWLY-BUILT & KNOWN FOREIGN STRUCTURE

30 ST MARY AXE
London

Year completed: 2004

Forty-one (41) storeys high;

30 St Mary axe is a 40-storey building in the St, Mary Axe area of London. It became
famously known around the world because it is recognized as one of the most distinctive
skyscrapers in London. The building was designed by famous architect, Norman Foster of the
Foster and Partners Architectural Firm. It is also known as Gherkin.

Design Concept:

The main shape of the tower is actually based from the physical environment of the city.
One of the highest considerations is the smooth flow of the wind around the building. The shape
of the building reduces the need for reinforcement to stiffen the structure and resist wind loads.
Diagonal braces at the perimeter mean the floor space inside the building is free from columns.

Gherkin is essentially an elongated, curved, shaft, with a rounded end that is reminiscent
of a stretched egg. However, despite the shape, the only piece of curved glass is the cap at the
very top.
Foster’s idea of the design was inspired by ideas that were developed in 1970s by
Buckminster Fuller a concept building, the Climatroffice.

Design Philosophy Context:

. “Architecture is an expression of values.”

Thus spoke by Norman Foster for his architectural firm’s design philosophy. Foster and
Partners is mostly known for their futuristic design concepts and Foster, himself, has the huge
admiration for the innovative ways of using glass.
In Gherkin, Foster’s design was rooted in practical concerns. The limited space that the
building has led to a slender round approach. Of course, environmental considerations led to the
alternating patter of light and dark double glazed glass window to provide insulation and reduce
energy use.

Shangri-La Hotel at the Fort, Manila is a 5-star hotel and

mixed used building in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City,
Metro Manila. It was recognized as one of the top four tallest
skycrapers in Philippines.

Design Concept and Philosophy:

The design concept of this skyscraper was made by its

US-based Architect, Handel Architects LLP. The idea was a
typical yet elegant place where people can reside, stay, and dine
in the most comfortable and luxurious way as possible.

The main design was basically

based on the philosophy of Shangri-La
hospitality. The place will embody that
powerful philosophy which is to build
a home of passionate minds.
