SPM English

Write a composition of about 350 words on one of the following topics.

(1) A pleasant surprise.


(2) The most beautiful place on earth.
(3) Describe a scene at a coast.

“Come with __, Aunty! _’m bringing ___ to somewhere special,” a shrill childish voice
said as _ felt a small hand tugging ____.

Tracy was __ niece, barely twelve years old, but a precocious little child, always
inquisitive and full of exuberant energy. As a baby, ___ had wailed and screamed,
determined to be taken out from the confines of ___ cot. _ knew ___ would grow up to be a
bright child. _ wished that _ could see ___ face but __ was impossible – _ was blind.

“Where are ___ taking __? Are ___ sure ____ mother would approve of this?” _ asked
as __ stumbled over some soft ground. _ could feel __ moving up a slope. Much as _ was
worried for ___ safety, _ was also intrigued. What was so special about the place __ were
heading to?

“Don’t worry, Aunty. _’m bringing ___ to the most beautiful place on earth. It is really
magical,” ___ panted as ___ scampered upwards.

Somehow, Tracy did not ever seem to mind that _ was blind. ___ would always
describe to __ all the strange adventures ___ had while out in the woods. Sometimes, ___
would take __ with ___ on one of ___ rambles. __ felt as though _ were living ___ life when ___
told __ these stories.

“Here __ are, Aunty! Can’t ___ smell the sea in front of ___? __ is the most beautiful
and darkest blue ever in this world. Picture __: __ is calm and tranquil now, but ___ know __
can rage ever so violently during a storm.” __ mind sought to conjure the image ___ had just
described so vividly.

“The sun is almost setting and ___ rays are glinting off the water like many sparkling
diamonds. Over there in the horizon is a little boat with a cute little sail… _ don’t believe
__! The folks are waving at __! Let’s wave back, Aunty, or else ____’ll think __’re unfriendly
people!”

Even though _ had never seen the sea or the sun before, _ could feel the salty tang
of the sea breeze assailing __ nostrils and _ could bask in warmth of the setting sun on __
uplifted face. Grasping Tracy’s hand, _ asked, “Tell __ more about what ___ see, Tracy. Is the
view really as splendid as _ think __ is?”

“Oh Aunty! The sky is filled with so many colours which are constantly changing.
There is a streak of purple at the fringe of the sun. The sun ______ is turning into a dark
crimson red as half ___ body sinks into the sea. Some of the stars are out, twinkling merrily
like little Christmas lights in the sky. _ think the seagulls are rushing home because ____
seem to diving around madly. __ is as if ____ are doing one last dance before the sun goes
down.”

__ did not matter that _ did not know what the colour purple was, neither did _
know what a seagull looked like; somehow _ could feel Tracy’s youthful exuberance
translating the images into __ mind which had always been shrouded in darkness. _ could
feel the air around __ dancing to the song of nature, a harmonious display of nature’s
splendour. __ touched __ heart and for the first time in __ life, _ knew what beauty was.

“Aunty, did _ say something wrong? Why are ___ crying?” Tracy’s voice sounded
worried.

“No, Tracy. ___’ve done nothing wrong. __ is truly a beautiful place that ___ have
brought __ to, _ ________ ________ that makes __ feel alive.”
