Panchottari dasa
The function of wisdom is to discriminate between good and evil.

10.1 Applicability
Panchottari dasa is the 105 year dasa scheme applicable in charts where the ascendant is in
Cancer Lagna & Cancer dwadasamsa (i.e. within 00 to 2030’ Cancer).

10.2 Dasa Scheme

The seven planets excluding the nodes (Rahu & Ketu) shall furnish the dasas in the order of Sun,
Mercury, Saturn, Mars, Venus, Moon and Jupiter. Derivation of the order is done by considering the
seven planets from Sun to Saturn in the order of weekdays. Starting from the Sun, every fourth planet
shall furnish the succeeding dasa. Thus, after the Sun, the next in order is Mercury [Sun(1), Moon(2),
Mars(3), Mercury(4)]. The next planet in the order is Saturn, the fourth from Mercury [Mercury(1),
Jupiter(2), Venus(3), Saturn(4)]. The dasa of Mars shall follow that of Saturn as it is the fourth from it
[Saturn(1), Sun(2), Moon(3), Mars(4)]. In this manner the order of the dasa in the Panchottari dasa
system is obtained as Sun, Mercury, Saturn, Mars, Venus, Moon and Jupiter.

10.3 Dasa Period

Starting with 12 years for the Sun and increasing each subsequent planet by a year, we obtain
their dasa periods.

The peculiar condition of the ascendant being in the purest, fruitful Rasi and Dwadasamsa of
Cancer hints at the higher spirituality associated with this dasa. The specific reference to dwadasamsa

made by Parasara is ‘Arkamsa100’, which points at the soul as the Sun is the natural significator of the soul
(Atmakaraka).

10.4 Dasa Calculations

Count from Anuradha (17) to the Janma Nakshatra and expunge multiple of seven(7). The
remainder counted from the Sun in the order of the dasa scheme shall furnish the first dasa. Dasa
balance is obtained by the standard procedure based on longitude of Moon in Janma Nakshatra.
It is noteworthy that ‘Radha’ is the deity of Anuradha Nakshatra. She purifies the individual
soul and leads it to Sri Krishna. One of the meanings of the name ‘Radha’101 is giver of Moksha
(emancipation) from rebirth.

Applicability & Theme: The Lagna is in Cancer 1055’. The Dwadasamsa Lagna is also in Cancer. This
shows the applicability of the Panchottari dasa. As mentioned earlier, Lagna is the governor, and the
theme is the establishment of a lineage or to propagate the process of creation. Why should a lady from
Haryana go all the way to learn the most difficult traditional Odissi dance with all its mudras, eye
motions and what not all. It is considered the most delicate dance form and takes decades to master.
Odissi is taught in the Guru-Sisya lineage and this lady dedicated her life to the continuity of this lineage
and this dance. Odissi dance has themes based on the Radha-Krishna love and is, in reality, a form of
spiritual rejuvenation as well. Thus, the theme of spirituality was well woven into the traditional dance
which she chose to master, and not only did she master it, her performanc, stamina etc, make her stand
out as one of the outstanding performers.

As brought out earlier, Moksha is the underlying theme in the form of a Radha-Krishna love and
this is already there in the dance form she had chosen. The period where this should show up should be
related to the Sun or the Atmakaraka. The opportunity came during the Saturn dasa (1981-95). Saturn
is the vargottama Atmakaraka and is conjoined an exalted Venus indicating that the Atma would go
towards dance and such artistic things for its ‘escape’. Since the special condition attached to this dasa is

the Suryamsa (Dwadasamsa), the Sun needs to be examined. The Sun is in Capricorn (ruled by Saturn)
and conjoined Mercury. Thus, during the dasa of Saturn she will not only learn the excellent dance, she
will also give many brilliant public performances bringing her fame & glory. However, with the advent
of Mars dasa, her performances are dwindling. Mars is the Amatya karaka and is naturally inimical to the
Atmakaraka Saturn. Although a yoga karaka and aspecting the Sun (the desire to perform is still there),
the talk is always about commercial performances instead of the beauty of the dance itself.
