THE RESISTANCE TO THE SOCIAL CHANGE

Nowadays we and our society are involved in several social changes, as

a consequence there are a lot of improvements in matters of education, job,
technological advances, family customs, social values, etc.
However, the greatest problem of this situation is the reticence of some
people to the change as a consequence of traditional values, close mentality
and other different factors such as living in a city or in a town, religion believes,
type of education at home and school… Therefore, if we wish a tolerable and
respectful society which develops and adapts to the current social changes, we
have to start this change from the very beginning of children’s life.

One of the most important which causes controversial changes is the

new family structures. Few years ago, all the families were structured of a
father, mother and one or more children. Nevertheless, the twenty- first century
society is making a way for new family structures such as single- parent
families, families which are created of two fathers or two mothers, couples
which do not wish having children, etc.
These family changes means a social mentality more open, more social
rights, more freedom in order to people are able to choose their happiness
without reservations and prejudices that is, a society which is adapting to the
twenty-first century evolution.

However, there are still a lot of people who thinks these family structures
are unnatural, a mistake or something complicated to speak or live and for that
reason, they prefer not to speak about these new family roles. This situation is
very normal at school where there is a resistance to adapt to these changes
and teachers prefer speak about the traditional family structure and not to
explain children with naturalness other current structures. When teachers teach
members of the family, family job, roles, family customs… they prefer speak
about father, mother and children and this way they avoid complicate or
uncomfortable questions. This situation is the same in a lot of families in which
avoid to speak about some issues.
The consequence of that situation is the well-known hidden curriculum
which includes a lot of issues such as family changes, sexual education,
violence or politic, issues which people considered they are controversial, do
not have a clear answer for children or they feel embarrassing if they have to
explain them. However, children are discovering the world and they have a
huge inquisitiveness/ curiosity and if they do not find a clear answer, they look
for it in another sources and they embrace wrong information.

To sum up, I would like to say that the best way to achieve a real social
change which make people easier to find their happiness is to talk with children
with naturalness, with a language and information which adapt to their
skills/capacities but answering always their questions. Only this way, children
will grow with an open mentality, responsibility and respect for everybody and
we avoid social prejudges which provoke violence, intolerance, fear and a lot of
social problems.
