Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL is a process in which individuals have the opportunity to obtain credit for college level
knowledge and skills gained outside the classroom and/or through other educational
programs. It is a process which documents and compares an individual’s prior learning
gained from prior education, work and life experiences and personal study to the learning
outcomes in College courses/programs. For more information about RPL at Red River
College, refer to the RPL website at http://www.rrc.ca/index.php?pid=404. For general
information and assistance with RPL, contact Red River College’s RPL Advisor at (204) 632-
3094.

Course Delivery
This course is delivered in a blended environment.

Approximately 30% of the classroom time is spent in lecture/demonstrations, with the other
approximately 70% of the time dedicated to labs in which instructors provide individual
assistance to students as required. This varies with each instructor.
Note: While all students should expect to spend extra time outside of class on this course,
students with little or no previous experience in Windows 7 or Office 2013 should expect to
devote substantial additional time – at least 5-10 hours per week outside of class time.

Students use the SAM tool outside of the classroom to help complement classroom

Course Policies
Research shows that regular attendance and completion of course work is a strong predictor of
academic success. Regular attendance is expected in all programs.

General Academic Policies

It is the student's responsibility to be familiar with and adhere to the Red River College (RRC)
Academic Policies. These Policies can be found in the RRC calendar or online under “A SERIES –
ACADEMIC MATTERS at http://www.rrc.ca/index.php?pid=4523.

Departmental Policies
• All assignments must be submitted by their specified due dates. Failure to complete an assignment
by its due date will result in a mark of zero (0) for that assignment. Exceptions may be made when
students are unavoidably absent or late because of illness or some other cause acceptable to the
instructor. Medical certificates or other documentation may be required.
• Students absent from an exam without a valid reason acceptable to the Chair will receive a mark of
zero (0) on that exam. Exam deferrals are at the discretion of the Chair or designate.
• Students unable to write a midterm or final exam due to illness or other unavoidable situation must
notify the Chair within 24 hours, and provide the Chair with documentation (e.g. medical certificate)
within seven days of the exam date. If approved by the Chair, a grade of DNW (Did Not Write) will be
posted until the student has completed a deferred exam.
• Instructors must authorize the use of electronic devices (i.e. smart phones, electronic translators) or
the Internet during class or in any test or exam room. Students who do not comply will be asked to
leave the classroom.
• Final exam results and final course grades will not be released to students directly in our learning
management system (LEARN). Only final grades posted in Web Advisor are official.
• Instructors may maintain possession of graded tests and exams. All final examination papers will be
kept by instructors for a minimum of one month into the next semester. By appointment, students may
view major term work or examination papers which have not been returned to them.
• Any audio or video recording in class is prohibited without the permission of the instructor. Students
who have approved accommodations from Student Support Services are allowed to record lectures
for their own personal use. Any questions regarding this issue can be directed to Haider Al-Saidi
(Chair, Accounting and Computer Education) or Brant Long (Program Coordinator, Accounting and
Computer Education) in P414.

Supplemental Policies

Due Dates:
• All due dates are clearly outlined in the online course tools SAM (Skills Assessment Manager)
& LEARN.
• To have all due dates in one place, an assessment checklist is provided for each part of the
course. It is the student’s responsibility to input the relevant due dates into this document for
their own benefit.
• Electronic versions of all assessments (with the exception of skillchecks) are to be submitted
to the instructor by the end of the day on the due date. Submitted files must be named as
listed in the assignment instructions and must be submitted using the appropriate tool (SAM
or LEARN). For example, an assignment emailed to the instructor will not be accepted for
marks.

Late/Missed Work:
• ASSIGNMENTS (LEARN DROPBOX ONLY) – 1 Day Maximum late time -10%:
All assignments in the LEARN Dropbox are due before the posted end date.
For assignments in the LEARN Dropbox only, students have a “late window” of 24 hours (this
includes weekend days). Work submitted within this time period will be subject to a 10% penalty (10%
of the total value of the assignment).
Note: After the due date passes, if no time extension is set up in the Dropbox, the student is required
to email the instructor before 4 pm within the late window time period, requesting the Dropbox be
opened for late submission.
It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of non-submission and to ensure the correct files are
submitted within the extended time period.
• ASSIGMENTS AND EXAMS IN SAM – NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED:
All exams and assignments in SAM do not have a late window – all work is required to be on time if
marks are expected.

Academic Integrity
• Submitting as one’s own work anything that has been copied from another student or source (e.g. the
Internet) without proper reference, or providing anything to another student for submission as his/her
own work, are violations of academic integrity that may lead to disciplinary measures. Refer to policy
S4 at http://www.rrc.ca/files/File/policies/new/S4%20Academic%20Integrity.pdf
