pH diagram
Procedure
Prepare materials
1. Dissolve iron flakes to saturation in .5 molar Sulfuric acid (H2SO4 )
2. Dilute to .0001 molar by adding 1 ml of .5 molar Sulfuric acid to 999 ml of water
3. Gather Materials
a. Pour 100 ml of diluted Sulfuric acid into one 250ml beaker then into the flask.
b. Pour 100 ml of Calcium hydroxide into a 250 ml beaker
c. Gather the safety equipment, pH diagram, and strips
Intro:
1. Welcome the audience
2. Explain what pH is
a. The potential for hydrogen
b. How acids and bases are measured (0-13)
i. Acids give a hydrogen ion (0-6
ii. Bases take a hydrogen ion (8-13)
3. Explain the materials
a. What acid, base, and metals are being used
b. What safety equipment you wearing
Experiment:
1. Combine Calcium hydroxide and Sulfuric acid in the last beakers
2. Explain what you are doing.
a. Explain why it is green:
b. The oxygen bonds with the iron making it rust.
3. Cork the flask and show to the audience.

Precipitating metals out of acid mine drainage
ELEVATOR PITCH
My exhibition is going to show how heavy metals are taken out of acid mine drainage and how
the acids are neutralized through an engaging and informative demonstration. This concepts will
ith dissolved iron in
be taught by adding Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) to Sulfuric acid (H2SO4 ) w
it. This demonstration will be put on twice a day for guests ranging in ages and knowledge.
TARGET AUDIENCE
My target audience is anyone who is curious and wants to see something really cool. This will
be really interesting for any level of education. The more you know about pH the less magical it
will be, but it will still be interesting. No matter what type of thinker you are this is interesting.
DEFENSE
My exhibit should be accepted to the S.R.W.R.F because of the real world application. This
procedure is happening in our community and there is very little education on this part of the
superfund.
