Post-Project Reflection

Throughout this project, I learned a lot of new information, especially about the energy
cost of transporting wastewater to a treatment plant, and how the treatment plant works. To get
wastewater to the treatment plant, it is much more cost effective if the plant is at a lower
elevation than the houses or buildings that the water is coming from. I also learned the different
steps in wastewater treatment. The first step is called screening. In this step, the treatment plant
will separate all large objects from the water to prevent it messing up the treatment later in the
process. The remaining matter is transported to another tank where the solid organic matter
(human waste) will be separated from liquid matter. This step is called the primary
sedimentation. Once separated, the solid matter is taken to the landfill, and the liquid matter is
transported to the next step. The third step in treatment is called the secondary or final
sedimentation. In secondary sedimentation, the remaining water is placed into a tank where the
waste sits and settles. The lighter substances like oil float to the top and are taken out, and the
heavier substances like solids sink to the bottom and are taken our as well. Next, the waste water
undergoes a process called aeration. In aeration the treatment plant will pump air through the
wastewater in big tanks called aeration lanes. Aeration lanes use bacteria to allow the dissolved
gases in the water to disperse, as well as break down the excess waste. Lastly, the water is
disinfected with chemicals to kill disease causing organisms before being released back into the
river.

I didn’t learn a ton of new life skills during this project, however I did strengthen some of
my already existing skills. I have always worked pretty well in a group, but I worked especially
well with Henry and Andy. Normally either one or the other of us will do all of the work, but I
felt like we did a good job dividing it up this time. Also, I feel like we had better communication
that usual, so that was really helpful in figuring out what we still needed to work on and what
people had already done.

I think that water quality is a good thing to look at in school, I just don’t think that
chemistry is the subject that should look at it. I am not sure what a better subject would be, but I
don’t think we should look at it in chemistry. I think that chemistry should be focused more on
the chemical makeups of the water, not necessarily the quality of the water. I do think we could
make this project more chemistry oriented in the future by adding in some more class specific
requirements. This project is great for school, I am just not sure it helped me learn chemistry.
