Chemistry 11

The Periodic Table of Elements

Quarter 3
January 29 – March 28, 2018
Teachers: Jacob Hundt, Bryan Heystek, Vicki
Ramsay
Course Description
th
The 11 grade chemistry course explores the
nature of the earth’s elements, their trends
and patterns within the periodic table and
their behavior when combined. Throughout
the course, many stories unfold as we explore the blossoming human perception of the
atom, the sorting and organization of the elements into what will eventually become the
periodic table, and a deepening understanding of the lives of the chemists behind this
work. Laboratory exercises range from observing phenomena and taking detailed notes,
to working with families of elements, to doing a series of experiments that reveal periodic
properties of elements. Eventually we will come to observe evidence for periodicity
including electronegativity, atomic radius, ionization energy and density. In the spirit of
embracing active citizenship, students for their final project will choose and research a
chemical of interest that is having an impact on human biology and/or the environment.
They will come to understand the process involved in manufacturing and distribution of
this chemical, its benefits and risks, and the agencies responsible for its regulation. Based
upon this research, students will write a 1500-word research paper and follow up with two
letters of action designed to inform the public or request stricter regulations involving the
chemical. Grading for the course will be based on attendance, class work, laboratory
experiments, a quiz, a final exam and final project.
