1.

GENERAL

1.1 Scope

a) This section covers the requirements for the surge protective devices and is to
read in conjunction with the Drawings.

b) All components shall be from the same manufacturer to ensure that Electrical
and electronic systems are with coordinated protection and with end of life
disconnector.

c) Surge protective devices (SPD) shall be installed at each main switchboard,

sub-switchboard and distribution switchboard as indicated in the Drawings.

d) All Surge Protective Devices (SPD) shall comply with IEC 61643-11 with
safety reserve. The SPDs shall be co-ordinated with the selection criteria
complying with SS555. SPDs shall be installed for all lines entering into the
building. The end of life (EOL) disconnector shall be installed with the
manufacturer’s recommendation. An EOL indicator shall be provided for alarm
signalling if the SPD requires replacement.

1.2 Standards

a) Code of Practice for Protection against lightning SS 555: Part 4: 2010 –

Electrical and electronic systems within structures

b) IEC 60364-4-44 Low-voltage electrical installations: Protection for safety –

Protection against voltage disturbances and electromagnetic disturbances

c) IEC 61643-11 Surge protective devices connected to low-voltage power

systems – Requirements and test methods

d) IEC 61643-12 Surge protective devices connected to low-voltage power

distribution systems – Selection and application principles

e) IEC 62305-1, SS555 Clause 3.52 Coordinated SPD protection

f) IEC 62305-1, SS555 Clause 3.38 SPD protection level to adhere to the
Lightning protection level (LPL)

1.3 Quality

The manufacturer shall be certified to ISO 9001 Quality Management System in the
design and manufacture of the surge protective devices.

2. CONTRACTOR’S PROPOSALS AND SUBMISSIONS

2.1 Detailed products specifications and catalogues. Copy of conformity and test reports.
3. PRODUCTS

3.1 System Performance

a) The maximum continuous operating voltage (MCOV) of the SPD must be more
than 10% above nominal system voltage.

b) The follow current interrupting rating Ifi of the Type 1 SPD shall be more than
the Isc (Prospective Short Circuit Current) at the point of SPD installation in the
electrical distribution system.

c) The maximum prospective short-circuit current Isccr of the SPD for which the
SPD, inconjunction with the disconnector specified, is rated shall be above the
the Isc (Prospective Short Circuit Current) at the point of SPD installation in the
electrical distribution system.

d) End of live disconnector shall be installed for SPD at the electrical distribution
system with manufacturer recommendation.

e) The SPD shall be modular in design. Surge protection circuitry, fusing

mechanisms and diagnostics are to be housed in a replaceable module. Each
surge protection component within a module is to be individually protected by
thermal and short circuit fusing mechanisms that disconnect should a fault
occur.

f) The SPD shall include visual status indicator at the module level. Remote status
indication is to be available through dry (or voltage free) contacts which can be
connected to the Building Automation System.

g) Class I surge protection device shall be of spark gap technology. The SPD shall
be able to perform under a standard test wave of 25kA 10/350µs current
impulse Iimp (per mode). The voltage protection level Up shall be <2.5KV.

h) Class II surge protection device shall be able to withstand 40kA maximum

discharge current Imax 8/20µs (per mode). The voltage protection level Up at
nominal discharge current In shall be less than or equal to 1.4kV.

i) Class I and II Surge Protective Devices (SPD shall come with common and
differential mode protection.

j) Class II Surge Protective Devices (SPD) shall comply with IEC 61643-11 with
safety reserve/backup.

k) Class III surge protection device at the electrical distribution system shall be
able to withstand 10kA maximum discharge current Imax 8/20µs. The voltage
protection level Up at nominal discharge current In shall be less than or equal
to 600V.

l) SPD for data and communication lines shall have a maximum surge capacity of
10kA per line and suitable for the type of data and communication system to be
protected, e.g. telecom, computer cabling network, switches, security camera,
etc.

m) Electrical and electronic systems are with coordinated protection and with end
of life disconnector. Selection and installation of SPD shall base on the location
of the switchboard / distribution board. For example, if the board is installed at
Lightning Protection Zone - LPZ 0/1, a Class I SPD to be selected. If the board
is located in LPZ 1/2, a Class II SPD to be selected for the installation. Class III
SPD to be selected when installed close to the terminal equipment or at socket
outlets.

4. INSTALLATION PRACTICES

4.1 All labels shall be clearly shown at the side of the devices.

4.2 The cross sectional area of the connecting conductors for SPD shall comply minimally
with SS555-4.

4.3 The total length of connecting conductors of each SPD shall be as short as possible
to comply with SS555-4. Where longer run is required due to site or switchboard
constraint, it shall subject to S.O’s approval.
