B allet to me evokes memories of my childhood. Dress-

ing up and going to the theatre. Leaning over the
wall of the orchestra pit before the performance and
watching the musicians warm up. The beautiful strains
of Tchaikovsky thrilled my 7 year old soul as the cur-
tain lifted to reveal a magical world of ballet. Rec-
ognising a few steps that the ballerinas execute that
I had learnt at my Wednesday afternoon ballet lessons
and being mesmerised by the beauty of the dancers,
costumes and staging! - Megan

How long has CTCB been going for?

Tell us about Encore and the fresh audience

approach?

I am very excited about what Encore is doing for

CTCB and the direction in which it is
leading the ballet company. It is so inspiring be-
ing around people who share a common passion and
work together towards the same ultimate goal.

What is Encore?

Encore is a group of young, energetic,

enthusiastic, passionate and glamorous profession-
als who have been brought together by their love of
ballet. They brainstorm, fundraise and network all
in the name of Ballet!
If there was one production you could put on,
what would it be?

We would LOVE to put on La fille mal Gardee! It

is a beautiful comical ballet in 2 acts,
literally translated it means The Guarded girl,
It is a story of a girl and a boy who want to
marry but the girls mother wants her to marry
a dimwitted but very rich man. The ballet is
charming and delightful. We have never been
able to put it on because the rights are so
expensive.

Why is the arts important?

The Arts are SO very important to a persons

education and well being. The arts feed our
soul! They give us beauty and light in a
progressively more unstable and dark world.

LOTS, MILI ONS, WHERE DO I START???

Okay so myself and MiLi Jo started out a fashion line in March 2010,
registered it and do all the legal jazz, but what drives us the most is the
intense love affair between MiLi Jo and her owner Michel Lisa
Johannessen. In the space of 4 months MiLi Jo has had 2 successful
fashion shows, first one at F.T.V, second at Butterfly Studios, been fea-
tured in Elle Magazine-June issue, soon to be featured in schmooze
on-line magazine, from the beginning of September MiLi Jo will be
found in four boutiques. One in Johannesburg, one store soon to be
opening in the northern suburbs and 2 residing in Claremont (Wardrobe
and The Lot) God willing in September I will be flying to Cyprus to be a
part of an amazing Charity event happening there.

MiLi Jo will be doing what she does best, working the runway with her
latest designs, but before we head to overseas. MiLi Jo will be doing
another fashion show in Cape Town sporting her latest designs to be
shown in Cyprus, so what’s happening, I’d respond with BLESSINGS!

How are you enjoying winter?

Loving it actually, perfect time to be indoors, be reminded about how

June issue, I was like YES PLEASEJ
I was once again reminded that
hard work pays off!
If you could do an international
internship, who would it be with
and why?
Secret- I don’t have a favourite
designer that might be strange,
especially for a fashion designer
but I don’t, so where do I find my
inspiration from? I don’t know,
I just do… I design what I think
looks good, and would make a
killer style… but hey an intern-
ship with any successful designer
would be amazing, I still have a
lot to learn in the fashion indus-
try… and MiLi Jo will be going
international without a doubt
so an internship anywhere over-
seas would rock, maybe New
York, Paris.

home a.k.a Bellville, however she

How long have you been design-
ing for?
Since the age of eight, not pro-
fessionally though I would make
outfits from scrap lappies at my
grandmothers place who used
to be a dressmaker. However I
left high school in grade 9 to pur-
sue my passion and completed
my Matric in Clothing Production
at the age of 16, Later studying
at C.P.U.T Cape Town campus,
graduating with an ND in Fashion
Design at the age of 19 years old.

5 months
What kind of person will wear my
clothes?
All trendsetters, confident fash-
ion lovers who thrives on social
events. Unique individuals who
use their clothing as a medium to
express themselves.
Your view on Laboutins?
Another secret- I had to go google what la-
boutins are : )
I dig them, they ooze sex appeal… perfect with
a pair of bobby socks… a MiLi Jo high waisted
pants rolled up and your favourite vest.
One word for the 80’s?
LEGENDARY
Was this direction always planned?
Allow me to correct a little something, I’m not a
professional photographer just a chick who likes
to play around with a camera and manages to
take super cool pictures with it!
Art, painting especially I’ve loved since a young
age… planned I wouldn’t say, destined to live
out I WOULD SAY!
What would be an ideal fashion for you?
A fashion show in the streets of Paris, but the
most important part, I want all my friends and
family who have supported me so far present
a Jazz band playing live in the background,
lanterns lit all around on a beautiful summer’s
night…AND THEN THE GREATEST FASHION SHOW
EVER!!! A very laid back vibe and of course a
deep house after party with my favourite disc
jockeys- Leighton Moody, Cassiem Latief and
Vinni Di Vinci easing the audience into a night
never to forget
What is totally Fringe for you at the moment?

RUDIMENTALS
What do you get when two teachers, a doctor and a chemical engineer
get together musically with a research consultant, a factory supervisor
and a studio exec? You get The Rudimentals! No, it is not a bad joke; it
is a winning combination for a great reggae-ska band! Fringe Magazine
sat down for a Q & A session with two of the members, Teboz and Jody.
Give our fringe readers a brief history of the band, when did it
start, when did it all come together?
Jody (J): The rhythm section had been jamming for a few years (looking for the
right front person) and one day Teboz responded to an Ad in the Cape Ads.
Once they hooked up it all flowed from there. They picked up the brass sec-
tion (at the time we were all on the jazz scene aching to play big stages so we
jumped at it). Over the years we’ve had some personnel changes such as Tony
Fingers on keys, Bong on bass and Doc Mike on lead guitar.
An 8 piece ska/reggae band, does it get crazy at times or are
you one big dysfunctional family who pulls it together just
before you hit the stage?
Teboz (T): You can say that, but dysfunctionality is not one of our characters. The
rudies is a very tight family, focused and always on toppa tings. Having fun is
one thing that we don’t forget so we are one big fun loving crew that is tight off
and on stage.
(J): You right, it’s crazy so it takes a combination of people. Our manager
normally starts the process and get’s us into one place. Doc raises an eyebrow,
after that we’re all focused and ready for war. Teboz runs us through the set,
then it’s lock n’ load.
Who writes the lyrics and are there any main themes or
topics you write about frequently?
(T): We all write lyrics although a few individuals tend to sing them. We write
about politics, violence AIDS social issues and even soccer!!. And yes we sing
about love too!!
(J): We all write the music and I think all of us influence the lyrical content
directly or indirectly. But I’d have to say Teboz is the driving force behind the
lyrics.
What’s’ the music-making process like especially since it’s such
a big band?
(J): It’s a beautiful mess. We insist on writing tunes together. Someone comes
with an idea and we all contribute. Everyone in the band comes from different
musical backgrounds(hip hop, reggae, rock, jazz etc.) so I think it’s the mix of all
of us that results in the Rudimental sound.
How has your music evolved since you first started playing
together?
(J): We started off playing predominantly ska mixed with kwela, reggae and
dub, and used that as a vehicle. But over the years we’ve matured our sound.
It’s definitely still reggae influenced but you’ll hear a lot more soul, hip-hop and
Dancehall creeping in. Whatever it is (we’ve given up trying to classify it), it’s
100% South African and 100% Rudimental.
(T): The music has evolved for sure to find its own people and its own new iden-
tity so to speak. This being a result of the different players of instrument and also
the varied musical backgrounds of most them Rude Bwouys!
What do you think the biggest challenge has been as a band?
(T): Keeping the band members excited and motivated as well as focused on
the music itself. There are other challenges such as finance, egos and all that,
but the band is much bigger than all that rasclaat boogoyaga… we no deal
dat!!!
(J): Co-ordinating the performance schedule of a profession band with eight
guys who all have day jobs.
What’s the ultimate direction for The Rudimentals? Grammy
Award winning band or just happy to be following your pas-
sion?
(J): Playing our music too as many people who wants to hear it. We just want
everyone to have as much fun at our gigs as we do on stage. We are all about
throwing the tightest stage show and the biggest parties that we can.
(T): I think the rewards come with passion and excellence of execution and
delivery
Off the top of your head what was your favourite gig and what was your worst?
How can fans-to-be gain access to your music?
(J): We are on twitter, we have a Rudimentals Facebook group and you can
check out our website for upcoming gigs www.rudimentals .co.za, and if you
want a CD it is available at most major CD outlets or better yet at one of our
shows.

vice, which is most certainly
missed in other establishments.
The menu at Gesellig had my
pallet in a tizz and I settled for
the lamb curry potjie. The curry
and spices was done just the
way I liked it. The sensual and
aromatic flavours compliment-
ed the wine perfectly.
Waitrons have been abso-
lutely great! Always a manager
available to see to your every
single need!
If you are looking for a new
regular place to be, I will vote
by far that Gesellig has won
my heart. It is a hard task to mix
good food, good background
music with a great ambiance,
Gesellig has it all! We wish you
all the best with your new ven-
