Real Archaeology
A Pelican Stone from Crystalaire Country Club
find certainly worthy of publication and presentation at professional meetings.
But wait! There is a problem – and here is the life lesson regarding true archaeology:
how do we know it came from out of the ground at Crystalaire?

I almost always respond because you never know when something truly significant
might show up. I went to Crystalaire with some other AVAS members and she brought
out an unusual carved stone object, carved from soapstone, a very soft schist with high

Native peoples around the world have been carving utilitarian and ceremonial objects
from soapstone for millennia. It was a slender piece about nine inches long with a
globular base and a sharply curved hook on one end. I had never seen anything like it
and wondered if it was even archaeological. I handled it, discussed it, took pictures,
