Instruction: Identify the type of application problem in each item, then solve using the first-order

differential equations.

1. A 1000 gallon holding tank that catches runoff from some chemical process initially has
800 gallons of water with 2 ounces of pollution dissolved in it. Polluted water flows into
the tank at a rate of 3 gal/hr and contains 5 ounces/gal of pollution in it. A well-mixed
solution leaves the tank at 3 gal/hr as well. When the amount of pollution in the holding
tank reaches 500 ounces the inflow of polluted water is cut off and fresh water will enter
the tank at a decreased rate of 2 gal/hr while the outflow is increased to 4 gal/hr.
Determine the amount of pollution in the tank at any time t.

2. A population of insects in a region will grow at a rate that is proportional to their current
population. In the absence of any outside factors the population will triple in two weeks
time. On any given day there is a net migration into the area of 15 insects and 16 are
eaten by the local bird population and 7 die of natural causes. If there are initially 100
insects in the area will the population survive? If not, when do they die out?

3. Gasoline is stored in tanks with diameter 40 m and height 15 m. The tank is initially 50%
full with 92-Octane fuel. The fuel is being drained out at a rate of 500 m3/h
(approximately 30 large trucks). The tank is being filled with 87-Octane fuel from the
pipeline, at a rate of 3000 m3/h. Assuming fuel additives mix evenly, how long (in hours)
until the fuel in tank be 91-Octane?

4. The Big Pot of Soup. As part of his summer job at a restaurant, Jim learned to cook up a
big pot of soup late at night, just before closing time, so that there would be plenty of
soup to feed customers the next day. He also found out that, while refrigeration was
essential to preserve the soup overnight, the soup was too hot to be put directly into the
fridge when it was ready. (The soup had just boiled at 100 degrees C, and the fridge was
not powerful enough to accomodate a big pot of soup if it was any warmer than 20
degrees C). Jim discovered that by cooling the pot in a sink full of cold water, (kept
running, so that its temperature was roughly constant at 5 degrees C) and stirring
occasionally, he could bring tht temperature of the soup to 60 degrees C in ten minutes.
How long before closing time should the soup be ready so that Jim could put it in the
fridge and leave on time?

5. Determine the number of atoms in a 1.00 mg sample of Carbon-14?

6. A tank shaped like a vertical cylinder contains water to a depth of 9 ft. A bottom plug is
pulled at time t = 0. After 1 h the depth has dropped to 4 ft. How long will it take for all
of the water to drain from the tank?

7. The circuit is in DC steady-state for t < 1 s. Find iL for t > 1
