Basic Computer Maintenance Page
Create the Basic Computer Maintenance page of your Technology Survival Guide Wiki.

Include the three sections below on your Basic Computer Maintenance page. In each section, cite any
resources used according to APA guidelines.

Section 1: Examples of Educational Technology Devices

Include two examples of each of the following types of technology likely to be found in a school setting:

 Hardware
-Tablets can be used by students to provide a resource for research, enrichment activities such as
games to practice skills or review materials and find supplemental information on a topic.
-Laptops are available to teachers, at my school, as a work tool to keep and maintain data, write and
store reports, research information for lessons and create lesson plans and assignments for the
students.
 Peripheral devices
-Touchscreen allows the user to navigate and operate the device by touching the screen as opposed
to a keyboard or mouse. This allows easy access to the device without an external application
requiring plugging into the device to begin operating it.
-Speakers provides audio output at a volume that can be heard by an entire room of students.
 Application software
-Word Processing program known as Word, allows the user to set up documents with borders,
margins, font style and size already configured.
-Presentation Graphics such as Power Point, provides the user the ability to create individual slides of
information and pictures in a slide show presentation format.

Write a brief summary of the function and educational relevance of each example.

Section 2: Procedures for Maintenance and Security

Write step-by-step procedures for two of the following:

 Maintenance
Basic maintenance of your computer is fairly easy with some simple areas to keep in mind. By
emptying unused files and opening storage space you can keep your processing speed from slowing
down and driving you crazy. And, backing up your computer on a regular basis can save a lot of
heartache and gnashing of teeth. I know this on a personal level, having worked on a research paper
for my Master’s for an entire day, only to have it disappear due to the computer experiencing a power
surge. When I realized there was no way to recover any of the work I had done that day, I proceeded
to go out to my nearest pub and cry into several beers. Using basic maintenance practices with your
computer can save you from utter frustration and a life of alcoholism…at least in regard to a computer
being the cause.
 Malware or virus prevention
1. Install Anti-Virus/Malware Software
2. Keep your Anti-Virus Software up to date
3. Run regularly scheduled scans with your Anti-Virus Software
4. Keep your operating system current
5. Secure your network
6. Think before you click
7. Keep your personal information safe

 Security
The protection and security of a school’s computing system is everyone’s responsibility. Recognizing
the need to safe guard personal and sensitive information is extremely important. This can be done
by following a few easy rules. Use cryptic and unusual passwords, Make sure all applications are up
to date and backed up. Use Anti-Virus and Spyware Software. And, whatever you do, think before
you click on a site or link. Being the cause of a virus or complete shutdown of an entire school’s
computing system would be problematic on many levels and not something that anyone would want
to be known for doing.
 Back-up plan
1. Plug in an external drive (flash drive)
2. Select Start >Settings>Update & Security>Backup
3. Turn on “Automatically back up my files”
4. Click more options
5. Set “Back up my files” to Every 10 minutes
6. Examine the list of folders you want to be backed up
7. Click “Back up now”

 Cleaning a computer

Write a brief summary of the value of understanding the basics of maintenance and security. Be
persuasive. If you have a technological horror story, this is the place for it.

Section 3: Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Troubleshooting

Answer the following questions:

1. What are the challenges in troubleshooting problems with the students’ personal devices?
I believe there could be several challenges with this. The device could certainly go through numerous
hands in an attempt to solve a problem. With each person trying their own solution, settings could be
reconfigured, causing more issues. The possibility of a device being broken is always a concern, as
well as determining who the responsible person would be, in regard to repair or replacement costs.
And, if a device is stolen, who would be held accountable for replacing it?
2. What is the teacher’s obligation or responsibility in troubleshooting problems with the devices?
The teacher would undoubtedly be held responsible for anything that happened to a student’s device
while in the classroom. Asking students to BYOD for a lesson during school, would be seen as being
that teacher’s obligation to safe guard the device.
3. What are possible resources to assist teachers in troubleshooting problems with the devices?
The school’s IT department could always be used, if they were available. But, when in doubt, other
teachers and classmates could be called upon to problem solve any problems. And, of course, there
is always Google!

Create a graphic representation (flowchart, infographic, table, or other as approved by your instructor)
that displays a systematic troubleshooting approach for students’ personal devices.
