Transformer Impedance 12.5%
Max. through fault Current on 220kV 2520 A
Side
Selected CT Ratio 400 / 1A
Fault Current (If) on CT Secondary 6.3
Side
X / R Ratio of the System 40 (Say)
Vk in case of ph-ph faults = 0.14 x If x 397.42 V
(X/R) x (Rct+RL+Rrel)
Total burden in case of phase to earth 11.485 ohms
fault (Rct+2 x RL+Rrel)
Vk in case of ph-earth faults = 0.14 x If x 405.19 V
(X/R) x (Rct+2 x RL + Rrel)
Selected Knee Point Voltage (Vk) of 450 V
the CT
Imag 30 mA @ Vk/2
Rct 11 ohm
Conclusion The Vk value for 220kV side PS class CT for
differential protection is Vk≥ 450V,
Imag≤30mA@Vk/2, Rct ≥ 11 ohms

* - Final Rct value shall be confirmed by the CT manufacturer and hence the value of Vk
shall be accordingly governed by the above formula. In any case, the CT shall be
designed to have Vk such that it does not saturate at system fault.
