TITLE

INTELLIGENT VEHICULAR NETWORKS AND COMMUNICATIONS

(CAR TO X COMMUNICATION)

INTRODUCTION
Recent advances in wireless technologies and integrated systems extended the use of
communications to new domains. Taking advantages of such technological growth, vehicle and
equipment manufacturers have recognised the opportunity of enhancing the surface
transportation, by using the communication capabilities of the vehicular ad-hoc network
(VANET) to offer an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) to the drivers. The major goal of
this project is to improve the driver’s safety by informing them about dangers and situations
that they cannot see. It will also be used to support other services such as: broadcast of weather
or traffic conditions. This will contribute to efficient mobility also by networking with the
traffic infrastructure, for example traffic lights. Car to x communication is a radio-based
exchange of information between vehicles as well as between vehicles and infrastructure.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

No longer science fiction, what would it be like if you could see past the next bend in the road
to the bend after and even farther? And you could adjust your driving behaviour and defuse
dangerous situations. This dissertation addresses the problem of efficient routing and
forwarding in VANETs. VANETs were selected for this study because, among the vehicular
networks, the ad hoc configuration has the greater potential of widespread use: it is scalable
(compared to cellular communication), low-cost, and provides higher bandwidth.

METHODOLOGY

This project requires the use of wireless and sensors technology that are installed in cars, and
lets cars broadcast their position, speed, steering-wheel position, brake status and other data to
vehicles within a few hundred meters. The other cars can use such information to build a
detailed picture of what’s unfolding around them, revealing the trouble that even the most
careful and alert driver, or the best sensor system would miss or fail to anticipate. IEEE 802.11p
is an approved amendment to the IEEE 802.11 standard to add wireless access in vehicular
environments (WAVE), a vehicular communication system which support intelligent
transportation system (ITS) applications. It support data exchange between high speed vehicles
and roadside infrastructure in the licensed ITS band of 5.9 GHz (5.85-5.925 GHz) frequency
spectrum.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of this project is to allow information to be obtained from points far outside the driver’s
field of vision, which is not the case with conventional sensors. Thus allowing the driver know
of hazardous situations early on, by warning of potential collisions that might be possible due
to driver’s negligence or lack of concentration. The safety network originates from a simple
principle: every vehicle with Car-to-X technology can simultaneously and autonomously
receive and send warnings. Networking makes the traffic not only safer, but more efficient as
well. Efficient mobility through communication is achieved when the vehicle receives a hazard
warning, the technology compares the vehicle’s position with the location of the hazard, as
soon as the vehicle approaches the danger spot, the driver is audibly and visually warned, and
allows the driver to prepare for the situation, adjust his/her driving behavior and avoid
accidents.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The scope of this project is limited to safety and effective mobility and communication between
vehicles, and synchronization with infrastructures. With Car-to-X communication protocols
and scope, it does not alter the driver’s way of driving as this technology is not related to “self-
driving cars”. The technology is only limited to safety and dialogue on the road between cars.
Recommendations for future project includes integration of an algorithm and AI to enable the
car drives itself.
