FACT
 Buying and selling of goods and services within the boundaries of a
nation is referred to as internal trade.
 Internal trade is classified into wholesale trade and retail trade.
 Purchase and sale of goods in relatively small quantities to the ultimate
consumers is referred to as retail trade.
 Retailer buys goods in large quantities from wholesalers and sells them
in small quantities to the ultimate consumers.
 Retailer represents the final stage in the distribution where goods are
transferred from the hands of traders to final consumers.
 Retailer purchases a variety of products from wholesale distributors,
arranges for proper storage of goods, sells goods in small quantities
etc.
 Retailers act as an important link between the producers and final
consumers in the distribution of goods and services.

CONCEPT Purchase and sale of goods and services in smaller quantities for the
purpose of making it available directly to the ultimate consumers is
known as retail trade.

CLASSROOM INTERACTION PROCEDURE PUPIL RESPONSE

PHASE 1: INTRODUCTORY PHASE


After the routine classroom practices teacher begins the class by narrating a story.

“Long ago there lived a king named ADIKIRAN. He was so honest and wise in his

beliefs and actions that his rule was considered as golden era as he did very

much for the good of people in his kingdom without any discrimination.

He set up trade within his kingdom, which provided others of the country

to exchange goods without any extra charges being levied as the trade was

meant for the development and enrichment of the people of that kingdom.

He encouraged the local people who were vigilant enough to be engaged students listen carefully.

in trade and act as link, which would facilitate exchange of goods within

the traders and the local people in the market. his basic idea was that trade

can only be expanded with the help of link between traders who would

purchase goods in bulk quantity from the other traders and make it

available to the local people which would facilitate equitable distribution

of goods within the country making his kingdom self sufficient and a heavenly

place for everyone to live in”


This piece of story helps the students to recollect the idea about trade,

internal trade, and wholesale trade and understand the interrelationship between

the intermediaries of trade and teacher asks some questions.

 What is trade?
Trade refers to the buying and
selling of goods and services with the objective of earning profit.
 What kind of trade did king adikiran try to establish? Internal trade

 What are the characteristics of such kind of trade? No import and custom duty,
domestic production and consumption

 What Was king’s idea behind conducting trade? To establish link between traders
who would purchase goods in bulk quantity and sale it to local people.

 What are the two types of internal trade? Wholesale and retail trade.

 Which type of trade has direct link between customers? Retail trade

From the response of students, teacher came to the topic:

PHASE 2: DEVELOPMENTAL PHASE


ACTIVITY 1: GENERAL DISCUSSION

Teacher presents a case and asks students to listen it carefully.

Mr. RAMU who is a wholesale dealer. He is an important intermediary in the exchange

Of goods from the manufacturers of steel from Bombay, states that it is due to the

help of retailers all over India that they are able to supply their goods and arrange

for proper storage ,collect market information and are able to promote their products

and an effective way to reach their consumers.


Teacher asks:

Ramu states that retailers provide him with many services. what are they? Supply goods, arrange for
proper storage, collect market information, promote products etc.

What is Ramu’s ultimate need through retailers? To reach the consumers.

Based on the above discussion teacher enables the students to realize that;

Purchase and sale of goods in relatively small quantities to the ultimate consumers

is called retail trade.

Retailers perform variety of functions from the distribution of goods to its

Promotional activities.

Retailers represent the final stage in the distribution of goods.

ACTIVITY 2: GROUP DISCUSSION AND GROUP ACTIVITY

Teacher initiates group activity by distributing activity sheet to each group and

asking them to answer the puzzling situation.

MR.GANESH the owner of GANESH ENTERPRISES is the producer of iron and

Steel items has got some retailing outlets at DELHI, Punjab and jaipur. Rajesh

whom purchased tons of iron rods from him and facilitates its distribution to

Other traders. He also makes sure that other traders like subhash, vinod and

ajay provide various other useful services and operates on small scale and

provide after sales services to the customers.

 Who is the manufacturer pr producer in this situation? Mr.ganesh


 Who is the wholesaler? Mr. rajesh

 Who are the retailers? Subhash,vinod,ajay

 What all services do they provide to customers? Making product available


to customers and its after sales service.

Based on the above discussion and activity teacher enables the students to realize

that:
Retailers act as an important link between the producers and final consumers in

ACTIVITY 3: ROLE PLAY

Teacher conducts a role-play relating to retail trade by selecting four students from

the class and giving instructions regarding their roles.

Scene1: Two students each represent a farmer and a wholesaler.

Scene 2: 2 students each representing wholesaler and retailer.

Scene 3: 2 students representing retailer and consumer.

After the role-play, teacher asks students that

 What do you understand from this role-play? There is an interrelation


between producer,wholesaler and retailer.
 What are the roles performed by them? Producer, wholesaler,
retailer, consumer.

Based on the above role-play and discussion teacher helps the students to identify that

PHASE 3: CONCLUDING PHASE


Teacher shows a chart representing the chain of interdependence between

the manufacturers and consumers in a blank form and asks them to fill in

their note books.

FOLLOW UP ACTIVITY

Teacher asks the students to visit a nearby retailing store and collect information

regarding their operations and contacts with wholesalers and manufacturer and

prepare notes.
