:BLASTING:
DEF: Blasting is an essential part of the mining cycle. It
plays an important role in all types of mining either it is
surface or underground, in which rock is broken. Blasting
technology is the process of fracturing material by the use
of calculated amount of explosive so that unrequired
volume of material is broken. Good blast designs are
essential for successful
mining operation.
Improper or poor
blasting design can get
damage to the rock
structures and cause
unwanted caving and
large increase in
support cost.
NOW-A-DAYS there are many types of explosives used.
Common explosives used in industry now are
ANFO(ammonium nitrate/fuel oil),Slurries, and
emulsions. Many factors (such as: rock type, density, strength, fracture
condition and water condition) are
taken into mind when
determining what type of blast design or explosive would
be used.

QS: What if rock is not blasted by primary blasting?

Ans: a) PRIMARY BLASTING: means the blasting
operation normally associated with the breaking of in-situ
ground (ground in its original position) .
b) SECONDARY BLASTING: means the blasting
operations are not concerned with the breaking of in-situ
ground. It can take place at any time during a shift to
remove overburden or reduce the size of big rocks.

QS: What are the blasting accessories?

Ans:Usually there are many types of accessories
which are use in blasting. In which some of these are
given below,
a)Safety Fuse:a chord of special black powder
wrapped in envelope made up of various layers of
textile yarn and water proofing material. Used for
directly igniting low Explosive of initiating high
Explosive through plain detonators. Burning rate
100-130 m/sec.
