HUMAN RIGHTS 101
Universal Declaration of Human Rights
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a document that
explains the rights that belong to all individuals, regardless of their
differences in nationality, religion or political view. It was drafted by a
committee of 9 people representing the United States, China, Lebanon,
Australia, Chile, France, the USSR, the UK, and Canada after World War II in
the wake of terrible human rights abuses that were committed during the
war. The UDHR protects civil, political, social, cultural, and economic rights.
It took two years to write the text of the UDHR and was adopted by the United
Nations on December 10, 1948. The United Nations currently has 192
member states, and all 192 have signed the UDHR.
Discussion Questions
Which rights stand out most to you?
How do these human rights intersect with one another?
How do these human rights impact your identity?
Why is human rights education important?
Were you confused about any of the articles in the UDHR?
Which ones were confusing and why?

HUMAN TRAFFICKING
"It ought to concern every person, because it
is a debasement of our common humanity. It
ought to concern every community, because
it tears at our social fabric. It ought to
concern every business, because it distorts
markets. It ought to concern every nation,
because it endangers public health and fuels
violence and organized crime. I’m talking
about the injustice, the outrage, of human
trafficking, which must be called by its true
name - modern slavery."
- President Barack Obama in remarks to the Clinton
Global Initiative in 2012
Human Trafficking
» Human Trafficking: involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to exploit
human beings for some type of labor or commercial sex purpose.
» A form of modern day slavery: people are being bought, sold, and traded
across the world.
» In 2016, 519 calls were placed to the Human Trafficking Hotline in North
Carolina alone.
» Human Trafficking is present right here in Charlotte!
⋄ Out of all of North Carolina, Charlotte is the #1 city where most human
trafficking incidents occur.
24,900,000
An estimated 24.9 million victims are trapped in the illegal
human trafficking industry worldwide.
