J As part of this study, ldriss updated the relationships he had derived in 1985 in
discrete equation format for peak accelerations and in chart format for spectral

J ordinates. He also incorporated the recent recordings from Coalinga, Whittier

Narrows and Lorna Prieta earthquakes. The resulting equation for rock sites is the
following:
J
Ln(Y)=[a0 +exp(a1 +a2M)]+[/30 -exp(/31 +/32M)]Ln(R+20)
J +0.2F+E
in which:

J Y= ground motion parameter (peak horizontal acceleration in g's or spectral

d acceleration in g's)
J M= earthquake magnitude; forMless than 6, local magnitude,Mr., is used
and forMequal to or greater than 6, surface wave magnitude,Ms, is
used. Thus, in essence,Mrepresents moment magnitude,Mw
R= closest distance to the source in km; however, for small magnitude
earthquakes (say M less than 6), the hypocentral distance is used.

D F= style of faulting factor; F = 0 for a strike slip fault; F = 1 for a reverse :J (

fault and F = 0.5 for an oblique source.
