SAMPLE PROBLEM

1. Given the data below, compute for the standard time :

Information Source of Data for one
Data day
Total time expended by operator Time cards 480 mins
(working time and idle time)
Number of parts produced Inspection 420 pieces
Department
Working time in percent Work 85%
sampling
Idle time in percent Work 15%
sampling
Average performance index Work 110%
sampling
Total allowances Company 15%
time-study
manual (workday)

SOLUTION :
(total time in mins)x(working time in %)
x (performance index in percent)
Standard time = ----------------------------------------------- x AF
per piece Total number of pieces produced

(480 x 0.85 x 1.10) 100

= ------------------------- x ------------ = 1.26 mins
420 (100-15)

2. An analyst has been asked to prepare an estimate of the

proportion of time that a lathe operator spends adjusting
the machine with a 90% confidence level (z=1.65). Based
on previous experience, the analyst believes the
proportion will be approximately 30%. What sample size
would the analyst need in order to have the maximum
error be no more than 5%?

SOLUTION :
n = [(z/e)2 p(1-p)]
n = [(1.65/0.05)2 (0.30)(0.70)]
n = [(1.65/0.05)2 (0.30)(0.70)]
n = 228.69 or 229
3. The owner of a large gift shop wants to estimate the
proportion of time shoppers spend in a certain part of the
store. The shop is open nine hours a day, six days a
week. Twelve observations will be taken over a 30-day
period. Determine the random observation times using
Table 8-6 and these instructions :

a. For days, read the first two digits of column 2, going

down, and then the first two digits of column 3, going
down.

b. For hours, read one-digit numbers in row 4 from left to

right.

c. For minutes, read numbers using the first two digits in

column 1, going down, and then the second two digits in
column 1, going down.

SOLUTION :
a. Days b. Hours c. Minutes

Combining these results, in the order they appeared,

produces the following results :
Day Hour Minute
11 1 34
24 6 47
15 3 16
13 2 39
13 1 27

27 9 15
19 5 32

Arranging the results chronologically by day, hour, and

minute (but maintaining the same combinations) produces
this list of observation times :
Observations Day Hour Minute

2 05 1 12
3 09 1 10
4 11 1 34
