A carnival game requires you to shoot a cranberry off of a turkey in a pit without damaging it.
The shot must be ricocheted off of a piece of metal above the pit. The turkey’s motion is
described by the function f(x). Your shot is described by g(x). What possible angle(s) off of the
perpendicular of your body must your shot be at to successfully win the game, assuming you
know at what times you must shoot?
GIVEN
𝑓 𝑥 = k x + 2 + 3.7975
𝑔 𝑥 = 2𝑥 = − 3

Step 1: Break up the abs value function into its components to find the equation which describes
the ricocheted bullet.
𝑓{ −𝑘𝑥 − 2𝑘 + 3.7975 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≤ −2
𝒌𝒙 + 𝟐𝒌 + 𝟑. 𝟕𝟗𝟕𝟓 𝒊𝒇 𝒙 > −𝟐}

Step 2: Plug the function into the discriminant formula and set it equal to 0 to find the tangent.

𝑘𝑥 + 2𝑘 + 3.7975 = 2𝑥 = − 3
2𝑥 = − 𝑘𝑥 − 6.7975 − 2𝑘 = 0
𝑏 = − 4𝑎𝑐 = 0
−𝑘 = − 4 (2) −6.7975 − 2𝑘 = 0
𝑘 = + 54.38 + 16𝑘 = 0

Step 3: Solve for values of k with quadratic equation.

= (−54.38 ± (54.382 − (4 ∗ (1 ∗ 16)))) /(2 ∗ 1)

𝑘 = −4.898387516, −11.10161248

Step 4: Find the angles using the tan ratio.

Creative Question: Ryan Dizon

Ryan is cooking a turkey. He waits for the stove to preheat from room temperature (75oF) to
420oF for 10 minutes. Later on, he puts the turkey in the oven to cook for 2 hours. Once he takes
it out, he lets the stove cool down back to room temperature for another 2 hours.

a) Graph this piecewise function F(t), where F is the temperature in Fahrenheit and t is the time
in minutes.

b) Create a model for this piecewise function using the information from the graph.

Creative Question: Hugo Pinto

The turkey population, in thousands, at any time, x, throughout the year is modeled by the
following function.
𝑓 𝑥 = 2% , 𝑖𝑓0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 9
𝑔 𝑥 = 8𝑥 + 8, 𝑖𝑓 9 > 𝑥 > 12

The function represents the population within a year. This function describes a sudden change in
the population at x = 9, due to Thanksgiving.

a) Create a table of values for the piecewise function.

x 2% x 8𝑥 + 8
1 2 10 88

2 4 11 96
3 8 12 104
4 16

5 32
6 64
7 128
8 256
9 512

b) Graph the piecewise function.

c) How many turkeys were killed due to the Thanksgiving celebration?

𝑓 9 = 2l
𝑓 9 = 512

𝑔 9 = 8 9 + 8
𝑔 9 = 80

𝑓 9 − 𝑔 9 = 432

\ 432 Thousand turkeys were killed due to the Thanksgiving celebration.

Creative Question: Sebastian Garcia

A turkey fundraiser campaign is gaining supporters on a day to day basis. After one day, they
have 1 supporter and remains for 3 days. For the next 4 days, they gain one supporter a day.
Then the gain one in 1 day, 1 m in 3 days, and another 1 after 5 days. Finally, they become viral
and start doubling supporters every day. Write a piecewise function and make a graph.

Question: Consider a function, f(x), that takes an element of its domain and rounds it down to
the nearest 10. Thus, f(15.6) = 10, while f(21.7) = 20. Draw the graph, and write the piecewise
function. You may limit the domain to XER (0,50). Why do you think graphs like this one are
often referred to as step function?

Answer:

0, 𝑖𝑓 0 ≤ 𝑥 < 10
10, 𝑖𝑓 10 ≤ 𝑥 < 20
f(x) = 20, 𝑖𝑓 20 ≤ 𝑥 < 30
30, 𝑖𝑓 30 ≤ 𝑥 < 40
40, 𝑖𝑓 40 ≤ 𝑥 < 50

They are called step functions because when they are on a graph, they look like steps of a
staircase.
