A.
Ottawa - The carnations will begin to bloom in April (13.5 Hours of Daylight)
Regina - The carnations will begin to bloom in April (13.7 Hours of Daylight)
Whitehorse - The carnations will begin to bloom in April (14.5 Hours of Daylight)
B.
a)

Regina
Green is best fit line and blue is >12
b)

Ottawa
Red is best fit line and blue is >12
c)

Whitehorse
Yellow is best fit line and blue is >12

C.
a) Regina:
Max = 17.1 Min = 8.1

∴ a = 4.5, c = 12.6 k = 365
Starts low and ends low, this means negative cos

f (x) = − 4.5cos[ 365 x] + 12.6

b) Ottawa:
Max = 15.4 Min = 8.6

∴ a = 3.4, c = 12 k = 365
Starts low and ends low, this means negative cos

g (x) = − 3.4cos[ 365 x] + 12

c) White Horse:
Max = 22.2 Min = 5.9

∴ a = 8.15, c = 14.05 k = 365
Starts low and ends low, this means negative cos

h(x) = − 8.15cos[ 365 x] + 14.05
D. Repeated above
E. a) Regina:

− 4.5cos[ 365 x] + 12.6 = 12

cos[ 365 x] = 0.133
2Π 2Π
365
x = 1.44 365
x = (2Π − 1.44)
x = (365)1.44

x = (365)(2Π

−1.44)

x = 83.65 x = 281.3
∴ Between the day 83 and 281 there will be more than 12 hours of sunlight

b) Ottawa:

− 3.4cos[ 365 x] + 12 = 12

cos[ 365 x] = 0

Creative Question:

As Santa passes through Canada he travels in a sinusoidal path. Starting

at the low point of vancouver and ending in the low point of Newfoundland and labrador.
The path takes one hour and his distance from the low point of the border is a function
of time in minutes. The max point is 2700 km high and the low is 0km at the border.
a) Create an algebraic model for Santa's path
b) At what time after the start of the hour will Santa pass Toronto(100 km form
border)

a)
Max = 2700 min = 0 ∴ a = 1350 and c=1350
p= 60min
k = 2Π
60
Π
k = 30 Starts low and ends low, means negative cos
Π
d(t) = − 1350cos[ 30 x] + 1350
b)
Π
− 1350cos[ 30 x] + 1350 = 100
Π
cos[ 30 x] = 0.925
Π Π
[ 30 x] = 0.39 [ 30 x] = (2Π − 0.39)
x = (30)0.39
Π
x = (30) (2Π−
Π

Challenging Question:
tanx cotx
Given that f(x) = 1−tanx - 1−cotx , determine all the values of a in the interval 0 ≤ a ≤ 2 π
such that f(x) = tan(x + a)

1
tanx
= 1−tanx
- tanx
1
1− tanx
tanx
= 1−tanx - tanx1 − 1
tanx 1
= 1−tanx + 1−tanx
= tanx +1
1−tanx
tanx + tana
tan(x + a) = 1−tanxtana
Therefore, tana = 1.
a = π4 , 5π4

Creative Question:

Ryan’s parents do not let him eat christmas dinner until he can solve their 3 trig
identities. He is unable to solve the third one so you must solve it for him so he does not
starve:

Simplify

√ √ 1 − cosx √
1 − sinx 1 − cosx√1 − sinx√1 − cosx√1 − sin...
Solution:

Let y =
√ √ 1 − cosx √
1 − sinx √1 − sinx√1 − cosx√1 − sin...
1 − cosx

y= √1 − cosx√1 − (sinx)(y)
KNOW
sinx = √1 − cos2 x
sinx = √1 − cosx√1 − sin2 x
sinx = √1 − cosx√1 − sinxsinx
Therefore, y = sinx

)
R.S = 2 cos ( 2 + 2 ) cos ( 2 − D2 )
C D C

R.S = 2 (cos C2 cos D2 − sin C2 sin D2 )(cos C2 cos D2 + sin C2 sin D2 )

R.S = 2 (cos 2 C2 cos 2 D2 − sin 2 C2 sin 2 D2 )
R.S = 2 (cos 2 C2 cos 2 D2 − (1 − cos 2 C2 )(1 − cos 2 D2 )
R.S = 2(cos 2 C2 cos 2 D2 − (1 − cos 2 D2 − cos 2 C2 + cos 2 C2 cos 2 D2 )
R.S = 2(cos 2 C2 cos 2 D2 − 1 + cos 2 D2 + cos 2 C2 − cos 2 C2 cos 2 D2 )
R.S = 2(cos 2 D2 − 1 + cos 2 C2 )
R.S = 2(cos 2 D2 − 2 + 2 cos 2 C2 )
R.S = 2(cos 2 D2 − 1 + 2 cos 2 C2 − 1)
R.S = cos2 ( D2 ) + cos2 ( C2 )
cos c + cos d = cos c + cos d

Creative Question:

On Christmas Eve, Santa’s reindeers work tremendously in hopes to deliver presents to

all the children on his nice list. The distance (per second) travelled by Santa’s reindeers
takes place throughout a duration of 24hours. Through the constant amount of energy
being burned by the reindeers, their distance fluctuates in the relation of a cos function.
This distance can be approximated by the function d(t) = 5 cos (0.5t) + 12 , where
0 ≤ t ≤ 24 .

a) Determine the maximum and minimum distances travelled by Santa.

M ax = c + a M in = c − a
= 12 + 5 = 12 − 5
= 17m = 7m

b) At 2:00 A.M Santa will be passing over the city of Toronto in hopes to reach every
child's residency to deliver gifts. To fully please all the children of Toronto, Santa’s
reindeers must be travelling at a distance greater than 14 meters. Mrs. Georgescu’s
daughter is one of the children that might possibly miss out on Santa’s presence if the
reindeers are not travelling fast enough. Will Santa make it to Mrs. Georgescu’s
daughter on time to deliver her well deserved gifts or will she have her Christmas
ruined?

d (2) = 5 cos (0.5 (2)) + 12

d (2) = 5 cos (1) + 12
d (2) = 14.7m

Of course Mrs. Georgescu’s daughter got her gifts! Santa’s reindeers worked
extra hard to make sure of it!

c) When Santa’s reindeers delivered gifts to Justine Ryan Dizon they were travelling 8.5
meters. Justine Ryan Dizon opens his gifts with his family by 4:30am, were his gifts
successfully delivered?

8.5 = 5 cos (0.5t) + 12

cos −1 (2.3)
0.5
= 0.5t
4.7 = t 4 : 42 A.M

Therefore, Justine Ryan Dizon did not receive his Christmas gifts and should not
open his gifts so early in the morning.

d) Graph the cos function.

Creative Question:

The population of Chaminade Christmas Festival can be described by a cosine function.

The maximum population of the event is about 700 elves, and the minimum is about
550 elves. At the first year of its establishment, the population is at its lowest. After 5
years, the population reaches its lowest number of elves. What is the equation of the
cosine function that describes the population of the Chaminade Christmas Festival?

The graph starts at its minimum, so the graph is reflected on its x-axis

a = 700 −2 550 = 75
d = 700 +2 550 = 625
p = 10, k = 2π 10
= π5

f (x) = − 75cos( π5 x) + 625
