ABSTRACT
The present GIS exercise exposes the results of a survey that is centered on the putting
in place the cartographic layout of the socio-economic infrastructures of mount Bamboutos on
one end, and a spatial-temporal analysis on the evolution of land cover features, accompanied
by proposed riparian buffer sites of 50m flanking watercourses on both sides that are probable
for restoration. The application of GIS in the creation and management of a database and
projection of the collected field data has permitted the production of an updated cartography
of the socio economic infrastructures of the area of study that falls within altitudes of 1600m
in the East, North and South and 700m in the West. Following statistical analysis and
observation the infrastructures are unevenly distributed at different levels (regional, divisional
and sub divisional levels). The application of remote sensing using remote sensed data
(LANDSAT satellite images) for a given period of 21 years (1986–2007) enabled the
deduction of many land cover features occupying the soil. This was achieved via a supervised
classification of the satellite images. By passing through remote sensing, the results derived
show a remarkable rapid dynamism of the landscape characterized by the dilapidation of
forest or vegetation land cover on one hand and an expansion of bare soil surfaces. The
combination of remote sensing and GIS have lead the definition of riparian sites that require
restoration taking into consideration slope effects (via the usage of a DEM dataset), surfaces
covered by vegetation and buildings. The proposed sites are two in category they are the high
priority riparian restoration site (which covers surfaces that lie bare and void of vegetation) on
one side and the low priority riparian restoration sites ( which constitutes surfaces that are still
occupied by savanna or herbaceous shoots. All the proposed riparian sites constitute lands that
have falling within buffer Zone of 50m assigned on both sides of the existing streams.
