NEW JERSEY ( IMAGE OF THE CITY)

INTRODUCTION
JERCY LIES BETWEEN NEWYORK AND NEWARK AND IS A
FRENCH AREA OF BOTH LITTLE CENTRAL ACTIVITY OF ITS OWN.
CRISSCROSSED BY RAIL ROADS AND ELEVATED HIGHWAYS, IT
HAS THE APPEARANCE OF A PLACE TO PASS THROUGH RATHER
THAN TO LIVE IN.
IT IS DIVIDED INTO ETHNIC AND CLASS NEIGHBOURHOOD AND
IS CUT BY THE RAMPARTS OF THE PALI SADES.
THE USUAL FORMLESS OF SPACE AND HERROGENEITY OF
STRUCTURE THAT MARK THE BLIGHTED AREA OF ANY
AMERICAN CITY IS ADDED THE COMPLETE CONFUSION OF AN
UNCOORDINATED STREET SYSTEM
THE DRABNESS, DIRT AND SMELL OF THE TOWN ARE AT FIRST
OVERPOWERING THIS IS THE FIRST SUPER EITHER GO UNDER
THE HUDSON OR THROUGH THE CONFUSING TONNELLE
TRAFFIC CIRCLE.

IMAGE OF THE CITY

THE MAJOR PARTS PRIMARILY THE WELL TRAFFICED ONE
WHICH BY THERE CONTINUITY ARE THE EXCEPTION TO THE
MAJORITY OF JERCY STREETS.
THERE IS A PAUCITY OF RECOGNISIBLE DISTRICT AND
LANDMARKS AND A LACK OF COMMONLY KNOWN CENTERS OR
NODAL POINTS.
THE CITY IS HOWEVER MARKED BY THE PRESENCE OF SEVERAL
STRONG EDGES OR ISOLATING BOUNDARIES THE OVERHEAD
LINES OF RAIL ROADS AND HIGHWAYS, PALISADS AND THE
TWO WATER FRONT
IT BECAME APPRANT THE NONE OF THE RESPONDANTS HAD
ANYTHING LIKE COMPREHENSIVE VIEW OF THE CITY IN WHICH
THEY HAVE LIVED FOR MANY YEARS.
THE MAPS WERE OFTEN FRAGMENTED WITH LARGE BLANK
AREAS , CONCENTRING MOST OFTEN ON SMALL HOME
TERRITORIES
THE RIVER BLUFF SEEMS TO BE A STRONG ISOLATING

STRONG AND THE LOW LAND AS WEAK OR VICE VERSA

STRUCTURE
THE VISUAL STRUCTURE OF JERCY CITY AS DERIVED FROM THE
FIELD A RECONNAISSANCE IS DRAWN TO SAME SCALE AND
USES THE SAME SYMBOL AS BOSTON DIAGRAM
THE CITY HAS THE LITTLE MORE SHAPE AND PATTERN THAN AN
OUTSIDER MIGHT THINK TO BE HABITABLE AT ALL
THE ESSENTIALS OF THE STRUCTURE ARE JOURANL SQUARE,
ONE OF THE TWO MAIN SHOPPING CENTERS WITH THE LINE OF
HUDSON BOULEVARD DEPENDS THE BERGIN SECTION AND THE
IMPORTANT WESTSIDE PARK. TO THE EAST 3 PATHS PASS
DOWN OVER THE CLIFF EDGE TO MORE OR LESS CONVERGE IN
THE LOWER AREA NEWARK, MONTGOMERY AND
COMMUNIPAW-GRAND. ON THE CLIFF STANDS THE MEDICAL
CENTER.

WEST SIDE PARK

THE ONLY LARGE PARK IN THE CITY

IT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST FIVE PARKS THAT ESTABLISHED THE

NEW PARK SYSTEM. THE NUCLEUS OF THIS PURCHASE
INCLUDED SOME OF THE HIGHEST LAND IN NEWARK. THE
OLMSTED BROTHERS WERE COMMISSIONED TO DESIGN THE
PARK. ORIGINALLY, WEST SIDE PARK WAS DEVELOPED ON TOP
OF A HILL OVERLOOKING A LAKE. THE LAKE WAS LATER FILLED
WITH SOIL TO CREATE FLATLAND FOR PLAY ACTIVITIES. THIS
DIVIDED THE PARK INTO TWO DISTINCT PARTS: 1) THE EASTERN
HALF WHICH IS FLAT WITH FEW TREES AND, 2) THE WESTERN
HALF WHICH IS SURROUNDED BY STATUESQUE LINDEN TREES.
STEEP SLOPES JOINING THE TWO PARTS WERE ONCE USED FOR
SKIING.
JOURNAL SQUARE

STRONG BECAUSE OF ITS INTENSIVE SHOPPING AND

ENTERTAINMENT ACTIVITY
WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN ITS NATURAL SHOPPING CENTRE
WAS STIFLED BY THE ARTIFICIAL CREATION OF JOURNAL
SQUARE ON THE UPPER LAND, SO THAT CITY HAS NO SINGLE
CENTER, BUT RATHER FOUR OR FIVE .
HUDSON BOULEVARD

THE BERGEN SECTION

STAND OUT PRIMARILY AS CLASS AREA

THE SECTION RETAINS MUCH OF THE CHARACTER THAT AT ONE
TIME MADE IT THE PREMIERE 20TH CENTURY RESIDENTIAL
DISTRICT OF THE CITY.[9][10] A VARIETY OF ARCHITECTURAL
STYLES CAN BE FOUND ALONG THE BOULEVARD, BERGEN
AVENUE, AND SIDESTREETS INCLUDING 19TH-
CENTURY ROWHOUSES, VICTORIAN
AND EDWARDIAN MANSIONS. MANY OF THE MULTI-FAMILY
BUILDINGS ARE PRE-WAR, BUILT DURING THE PERIOD OF
EXPANSIVE GROWTH IN THE 1920S AND 1930S,
SOMETIMES ART DECO STYLE.[11] INCLUDING THE HAGUE,
RESIDENCE OF ONE OF THE CITY'S BEST-
KNOWN MAYOR, FRANK HAGUE.[12] AMONG THE MANY
LANDMARKS IN THE AREA ARE THE FAIRMOUNT
APARTMENTS,[13] TEMPLE BETH-EL, AND THE FORMER JERSEY
CITY YMCA. LINCOLN THE MYSTIC, A STATUE OF A
SEATED ABRAHAM LINCOLN BY JAMES EARLE FRASER IS
SITUATED AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE PARK WHICH BEARS THE
PRESIDENT'S NAME.[14] AND IS ONE OF THE HUDSON COUNTY'S
LARGEST PUBLIC GREEN SPACES.

VAN VORST PARK

The park is bordered by 19th century brownstones and

townhouses including the Heppenheimer Mansion. It contains a
large gazebo at the center, two playgrounds, a splash park and
a dog park. An iconic cast iron water fountain sits in the
western quadrant of the park. The surface of the park primarily
consists of grass and a paved walkway.
LIBERTY STATE PARK
Freedom Way and Liberty Walkway[edit]
A road called Freedom Way goes through the center and serves
as a barrier between the area closed to the public, to its west,
and the area that is open to the public, to its east. It has
many bike paths, walkways, and fields.
Liberty Walkway, a crescent-shaped promenade, stretches
from the CRRNJ along the waterfront south to the Statue of
Liberty overlook, bridging two coves along the way. It is part of
the longer Hudson River Waterfront Walkway. Halfway along
Liberty Walkway is a bridge to Ellis Island, but only authorized
vehicles are allowed. The southeastern corner of the park
contains the Statue of Liberty overlook, picnic facilities, a
playground, the U.S. Flag Plaza and Liberation Monument, the
Public Administration Building, and a memorial to the Black
Tom explosions. Picnicking and barbecing facilities are also
located at the southern end of the park. Originally called
"Liberty Walk",[10][11][12] this part of the project won a landscape
award in 1995.[13] The name "Liberty Walk" was already
associated with Philadelphia such as through a booklet The
Liberty Walk Through Historic Old Philadelphia published by the
American Wax Museum, Philadelphia (before 1969) which
listed a walk round 23 sites of historic interest.
Liberty Science Center[edit]
The Liberty Science Center, at the northwestern entrance to the
park, is an interactive science museum and learning center. The
center opened in 1993 as New Jersey's first major state science
museum. It has science exhibits, the world's largest IMAX
Dome theater, numerous educational resources, and the
original Hoberman sphere, a silver, computer-driven
engineering artwork designed by Chuck Hoberman.[14]
Monuments and memorials[edit]

Empty Sky Memorial with a remnant from the World Trade

Center in the foreground
Liberation is a bronze sculpture designed by Nathan
Rapoport as a memorial to the Holocaust, showing a U.S.
soldier carrying out a survivor from a Nazi death camp.[15]
Empty Sky is the official state memorial to the September 11
attacks of the World Trade Center. Situated on a berm the
parallel walls engraved with the names of victims are oriented
to face the former World Trade Center site. Designed by
architect Frederic Schwartz, it was dedicated on September 10,
2011, commemorating the tenth anniversary of the attacks.[16]
