NOTE: Communication to the Web from the 3D TRASAR Controller is required for Nalco
360™ Service.
2. Modem–Set up local ISP dial up with an analog phone line NOTE: Both the DNS
Server & mail server names are needed.
3. Local Area Network (LAN)- Ethernet via local area network (standard cables)
The Nalco Global Gateway also has four 4-20 mA inputs for tank level monitoring. In the
future these units will allow for automatic ordering and maintaining chemical inventory. At this
time the Nalco Global Gateway can only be Ethernet used to monitor tank levels on the tanks.
When you just can't get a phone line or a connection to your controller, the Nalco Global
Gateway takes care of the need so you can utilize all the capabilities of your controller.
NOTE: A Verizon version of the NGG will come out July of 2010. However AT&T will still be
the preferred method. Verizon service should be employed only in locations where there is not
AT&T Service.
On-site Survey
1) Attempt to make a web/data connection with your GSM/GPRS phone from the area
nearest to your controller. If the connection is successful, the Nalco Global Gateway
should also work from that location.
2) If you have a GSM phone without data, attempt a voice call. If the call is successful,
there is a high probability that the Nalco Global Gateway will also work.
3) If you are unable to make a data connection or phone call near the controller, move to
another location and try again. If you are successful, you will need to move the unit
with extension cables or purchase the external antenna option. Known cases include
controller installations in basements, in steel buildings, or near electrical equipment.
4) Field Managers may choose to purchase a district NGG unit for representative use in
conducting surveys.
5) If using an NGG for the survey 3 bars are desirable for reliable service. NOTE: This is
also required for Nalco 360 Service and/or TLM Service. If you are unable to get 3
bars move to another location and try again. If you are successful, you will need to
move the unit with extension cables or purchase the external antenna option.
There are two antennas provided with the Nalco Global Gateway.
New Cellular Antenna (P/N 060-NGG1ANT.88) NOTE: This antenna acquires signals from local
wireless sensors, such as wireless TLM probes.
They need to be connected to the appropriate connector on the outside of the Nalco Global
Gateway.
If you were able to perform the cell phone survey, place the Nalco Global Gateway in a
location where a good signal was obtained during the test. If you were not able to perform the
cell phone survey, place the Nalco Global Gateway within 4 feet of the controller if the unit will
be transmitting controller information.
1) Power up the Nalco Global Gateway using 100 to 240VAC (50 or 60Hz).
2) Look at the light on the front of the unit and watch the Cellular Link and Active
lights along with Signal Strength lights. Within a minute, the Signal Strength
"bar" lights will illuminate. Shortly afterwards the Active light will begin to flash
intermittently, and the Cellular Link light will become illuminated and remain
illuminated. The Signal Strength lights will also turn orange.
3) If you have at least 3 "bars" and the Link light is illuminated, you have a suitable
signal and can begin installation.
4) If you do not have 3 "bars" and/or an illuminated Link light, turn and/or move the
gateway unit until the signal improves. If you are unable to obtain a suitable
signal in the area, you will need to install the external antenna and run the test
again.
Installation
1) Once a suitable signal location is found, securely mount the enclosure vertically
on a wall or suitable frame.
2) Make sure the Ethernet cables reach the left side of the controller with 6-8 inches
to spare. The cables can be replaced with longer Cat-5 cables (up to 50m) if
necessary.
NOTES:
Ø You can relocate the Nalco Global Gateway away from the controller and replace the
standard cables with Cat-5 Ethernet cables up to 50m in length. All ports on the
Nalco Global Gateway internal Ethernet switch are identical and can be used
interchangeably.
Ø The Nalco Global Gateway should be mounted vertically against a wall or frame.
Ø The optional external indoor/outdoor high gain antenna (part # 060-TR5284.88) does
NOT come with a cable. A 25 ft (part # 060-TR5284C25.88) or 100 ft (part # 060-
TR5284C100.88) cable must be ordered to connect the antenna to the Nalco Global
Gateway.
Ø NEW – There is a new amplifier available to boost your signal strength by 10db.
10db is equivalent to approximately 2 bars difference on the Nalco Global Gateway
display. The part number is 060-NGG1AMP.88.
Ø See the General Arrangement drawing in section 9 for a better understanding.
1. Connect your laptop to the Nalco Global Gateway’s free Ethernet cable. NOTE:
If the cable is connected to the 3D TRASAR controller, it will need to be
disconnected temporarily so you can use the same Ethernet cable or connect to
the side of the 3D TRASAR controller.
1) Press the MENU button on the controller and select Network Settings. Change
the settings as follows:
DHCP Disabled
IP Address 192.168.001.002

a. Purpose
This document answers some frequently asked questions about 3D TRASAR controller security. The
majority of the answers apply to both Cooling and Boiler controllers but there is a difference between
these technologies which is noted at the end of this document.
The following four are main concerns we hear regarding 3D TRASAR Controller Security:
3. What security has been built into the 3D TRASAR controller to prevent
unauthorized users from changing controller settings or otherwise accessing the
controller?
b. Connection Methods
1. Locally, using the controller keypad or a Nalco laptop using a crossover LAN cable
3. Remotely, through an NGG (Nalco Global Gateway) which connects the controller to
the Internet using a cell modem.
NOTE: The next sections summarize the specific security issues related to each connection
method.
There is a password associated with the controller which is required to make any changes to its
configuration. When the controller is shipped, the password is set to the default which ensures the
technician installing and configuring the controller can access it upon delivery.
Strengths
4. The password can be changed easily, should the user wish to do so.
Weaknesses
Recommendations
The password at the controller is necessary and should be changed occasionally by the customer,
but customers concerned about physical security of the controller should consider mounting it in a
locked enclosure or restricting access to the location where the controller has been installed. That
would offer more protection than the password. More damage could be done to the system by
simply turning the controller off than by accessing the controller through the controller keypad.
Connection to the controller using the 3D TRASAR Configurator is relatively straightforward. One
must know two pieces of information: the controller phone number and the controller password.
Only Nalco personnel have computers with the full version of the 3D TRASAR Configurator installed
which allows them to make such changes to the controller.
To access the controller through a non-Nalco computer without the 3D TRASAR Configurator, a
User needs a great deal more information:
3. Authentication URL
4. Controller password
Strengths
1. Accessing controllers over the phone is very easy using the 3D TRASAR Configurator
if the phone number and password are known.
2. A phone line connection allows data transfer to the 3D TRASAR Web for added value.
Nalco Global Equipment Solutions
44/56
3D TRASAR Web Connection Methods Installation and Operation Manual (Part # OM0229)
February 2011
Weaknesses
1. Although very difficult to do, it is possible to gain access to the controller through an
analog phone line without the 3D TRASAR Configurator.
2. Neither the data streams nor the alarm emails are encrypted in any way. Data and
alarms are sent through unencrypted emails to the 3D TRASAR Web (SMTP PORT
25.)
Recommendations
Changing the controller password on a regular basis is the best way to prevent access to the
controller by unauthorized personnel. Managing the access list in 3D TRASAR Web will also
prevent unauthorized viewing and downloading of data.
Remote connection through an NGG is the most secure way to access the controller because it
restricts access to Nalco personnel. All NGG’s reside on the Nalco Network behind the company
firewall. Connection attempts by other parties are ignored.
NOTE: The NGG is not a Wi-Fi device. Some have expressed concerns that someone with a
computer and a Wi-Fi card near the controller could access it through an NGG. This is not
possible. The NGG is essentially a cell phone modem. It does not create a wireless Internet
hotspot to which a computer could connect.
Strengths
1. Encryption is included with the wireless service. Data can only be transferred from
the controller to a Nalco computer.
2. Easy to use.
Weaknesses
3D TRASAR Web allows Nalco Sales Engineers and customers to view current data, create
graphs and reports and download historical data stored on the 3D TRASAR Web Server. A user
cannot access a 3D TRASAR controller through 3D TRASAR Web, only the data stored on the
server. The Nalco Sales Engineer assigned to the account manages user access to the controllers
on the 3D TRASAR Web. Requests to grant or revoke customer access need to be communicated

to the Nalco Sales Engineer.
g. 3D TRASAR Boiler Technology
There is a fundamental difference between the communication method used in the 3D TRASAR
Cooling Water controllers and the 3D TRASAR Boiler controllers. Alarms and data in the boiler
controllers are not sent as emails, they are sent directly to the 3D TRASAR Web Server as xml
files using HTTP PORT 80. These files are not encrypted, but since they are sent directly to the
Nalco web server it is assured they are not stored elsewhere.
h. Conclusion
ü To date, not one instance of unauthorized access to a Nalco 3D TRASAR controller has
been reported.
ü Accessing a controller remotely is possible but requires intimate knowledge of the controller
password and connection method.
ü The NGG (Nalco Global Gateway) “method of communication” is the most reliable,
inexpensive and secured connection method.
2. Every time a new controller is installed and the configuration is uploaded into the
controller, a copy of all the .XML files is stored in a ‘transfer’ folder on that Nalco PC.
When the User connects to a Nalco server, the files are detected and sent to the web
servers. The “Email Setting” information above is then read.
3. The Web server reads copied information that tells it who your “Customer” is, what
their Customer Number (SAP Sold To) is, and what the serial number of the
controller is. When the Web finds a “new” Customer + serial number combination the
Web server automatically builds the controller profile on the Web. The
‘Customer_Location_System’, (CLS) is displayed as the “Web Name” for your
controller.
Caution: You must use the latest version of the Configurator and Firmware (controller and
display) to acquire Nalco 360™ Service.
• Pending - These controllers have been set up properly and have the Customer
Number (SAP Sold To), but the Web server has not received a data email from the
seemingly connected controller, or has not had data posted if “Web For All”. To
make the account active: Ensure that the phone line is activated, make sure the
ISP account has been approved, make sure the option "I want the controller to
notify me by email if the system parameters get out of pre-set limits" in the
Configurator is checked, and download data to PC regularly then connect to the
Nalco Network through your VPN.
• Unapproved - These controllers are missing their Customer number (SAP Sold To)
in the Data Source Management page. Enter the proper Customer number (SAP
Sold To), click "SAVE" and, when the fields re-populates, the controller will be
"Active." If the system does not recognize the Customer number (SAP Sold To) you
entered or returns a Customer listing that is not correct, press the Contact Support
link and explain what happened so the Administrator can correct the listing.
c. Duplicate Controller
Contact Technical Support. All stored or posted data will have to be migrated so a single controller
data source can be created.

There are three types of probes that can be connected to the Nalco Global Gateway. The first type
is a three-wire 4-20 mA level probe examples of these are the ultrasonic PORTA-FEED® and
small bulk tank level probes. The second type is the two-wire loop powered 4-20 mA level probe
that does not supply power to the loop (also known as a non-powered 4-20 sensor). Examples of
these sensors are “most-differential-pressure” probes. The third type is the two-wire, loop
powered, 4-20 mA level probe that does supply power to the loop (also known as a powered 4-20
sensor). Examples of these sensors are those that are plugged in and supply their own power.
Emerson, Endress & Hauser or Ohmart Vega are companies that manufacture sensors with their
own power supplies.
These probes are labeled V for voltage, I for signal, and G for ground. Below is a drawing of our
standard PORTA-FEED and small bulk tank sensors (Part number 060-TLM100.88).
These probes are representative of a standard D/P sensor. Note the wiring below.
These probes are representative of a high-end sensor that has it’s own power source. Note the
wiring below.
