STOMP

6th Grade Music, 2nd Trimester Project

For this assignment, you and the members of your group must compose two contrasting
compositions. Each composition must encompass a variety of rhythm notation. You will be playing your
composition for the class on non-traditional instruments. Non-traditional instruments are items that you
can use to make a sound that aren’t typically used as instruments (example: trash can, spoon, chair,
basketball, etc.). You will be graded on the variety of rhythm notation used, your ability to use only four
beats in every measure, neatness, how well you work in your groups, your behavior as an audience
member, and how well you can play the composition you wrote while others play a different
composition at the same time.

Here is the breakdown:

- Week 1: Split your big group into sub-groups. Each sub-group should compose their
own composition. Make sure each kind of notation is used SOMEWHERE between
both compositions. Rehearse your compositions separately on body percussion. If
there is time, add the sub-groups together and begin to play your different
measures at the same time. Make sure to keep a steady beat so you can stay
together.

- Week 2: Review your composition on body percussion. Make sure it is 100% correct.
Have Mrs. Zimmerman check your composition for a grade. After you get approved,
add in your non-traditional instrument. MAKE SURE your non-traditional instrument
is the same within your sub-group. Rehearse with your non-traditional instrument
with your sub-groups. Do not put the big group together until you are comfortable
separately.

- Week 3: Rehearse both compositions together with the non-traditional instruments.

Use the entire period to practice.

- Week 4: Rehearse for the first ten minutes of class, and be ready for performance.
Make sure your composition form is completed neatly to turn in for a grade.

Please review the rubric located on the next page for a breakdown of grading.
