Letter to Parents

Dear Parent/Guardian of Student 3,

My name is Rachel Slaven! I am a student teacher from Dakota State University. I

will be working in the Chester School District for the 2017-2018 school year! I had the
opportunity to work with your daughter in her 6th grade math class this quarter!
The first unit focused on factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers,
greatest common factor, least common multiple, prime factorization, distributive
property, and order of operations. We spent the entire first quarter working on these
ideas! One of my favorite things about this unit, is that we got to play multiple games
throughout, to help the students understand the concepts a bit better! The students did
great with them, and I know they really enjoyed them! I encourage you to ask your child
about these games, and then continue to play them at home!
Before we dove into the unit, I gave each student a pre-test. I know that pre-tests
can be somewhat frustrating for students, however they are a great tool to show
growth! Student 3’s pre-test score was a 6/35 (17%), but her post-test score was a
29/35 (83%)! She had excellent growth, and I am very pleased with her results!
Student 3 came to class prepared and ready to learn every day! Her post-test
score reflects all the hard work she has put in so far, this year! She was a joy to have in
class! I would love for her to speak up more in class and participate in class by answering
more questions! She is so smart, and I would love to see her confidence continue to
grow!
I have really enjoyed my time here at Chester so far! I am excited to see Student
3’s growth throughout the rest of the year! If you have any questions or concerns,
please don’t hesitate to contact me at rachel.slaven@k12.sd.us .

Thank you,
Rachel Slaven
