communication skills.
Required Textbook:
Shelly Cashman Microsoft Office 365 & Office 2016: Introductory, 1st Edition
Authors: Misty E. Vermaat, Steven M. Freund.
During this semester, you will be completing assignments in an interactive online learning environment called
SAM. Every student must purchase a unique SAM registration code to get access to SAM. There are two ways for
you to get access to SAM.
Textbook Bundle: Student can purchase a CGS1100 Bundle at any PHSC Bookstore. This includes a print copy of the
textbook AND a SAM registration code. The SAM registration code will give you access to the SAM assignments and
the e-book version of the textbook.
ISBN (bundle): 9781337356121
OR
SAM/e-Book Only: Alternately, students can purchase just a SAM registration code at the PHSC Bookstore that
provides access to SAM assignments and the CGS1100 e-book. Please note that there is NO print copy of the
textbook included.
ISBN for e-book: 9781337114004
Students are strongly encouraged to obtain their SAM registration code at the PHSC Bookstore and NOT online.
There are multiple types and levels of SAM access available online. SAM registration codes that are purchased at
the PHSC Bookstore are configured for the correct type of access required for CGS1100 at PHSC. SAM registration
codes that are purchased elsewhere may not provide the correct access to SAM assignments or the e-book.

Method of Instruction:
This is an online, hands-on based course, therefore for you to be successful and to get the most out of this class,
you must complete all the assigned work. It is estimated that students will need to spend approximately 8-10
hours per week on this course, completing the assignments in the PHSC Computer Lab, library, or at home. To be
successful in this class you must take the time and do the work.
Course Policies:
There are no extra credit assignments.
Assignments are due by the date and time listed in the syllabus. Eastern Standard Time.
Computer problems, Internet problems, work, etc. are not acceptable reasons for late submissions beyond the
late assignment policy.
Students MUST use the SAM start file to complete textbook and SAM projects. Failure do to so will result in a
zero grade.
Assignments must be completed in the same software as in the textbook. This includes Office 365.
It is the student’s responsibility to ensure access to the technology resources required for this course. All
PHSC campus computers in the Open Computer Labs have the technology resources required for this course.
Check the main www.phsc.edu website for hours and days of operation. Students may use their home
computer to complete assignments. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that home computers used to
complete assignments have Office 365 or Office 2016 versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. Note
that Microsoft does not currently have a Macintosh version of Access.
Example: You are directed to type “brown fox” and then bold and italicize the word “brown.” You type “bron”
instead of “brown” and you italicize and bold “bron.” You may lose points for incorrect Bolding and incorrect
Italicizing. In some cases, point deductions can be significant.
Working Ahead:
Since this is a class with many different levels of computer skills there may be those of you who want to work
ahead. You may work ahead if you want. I especially encourage this if you have something coming up during the
semester that will hinder you from completing your assignments.
Computer Lab:
Computers with all needed software for this course are located on each campus open computer lab. Lab hours are
available online at phsc.edu.
Communication:
Communication between the instructor and student is a critical success factor in any course. You are to use the
myPHSC Email (Inbox) tool to send messages to the instructor. A response to your email will be received within 24
hours during the normal college hours (Monday – Friday) and within 48 hours during weekends and holidays.
Please be sure to email me with any questions instead of leaving me a comment within the assignment drop-box,
as I do not receive comment notifications.
Course Schedule:
The course schedule includes a list of assignment and due dates and it provided in myPHSC.
Cheating Policy:
Adhere to the following rules:
1. All assignments are individual assignments, not group or joint assignments.
2. Only submit work that YOU have created.
3. Two students who are working at one computer to create a file, and then both submit that file is
considered cheating.
4. Giving another student your work or receiving another student’s work is considered cheating.
5. Copying and pasting another student’s work is considered cheating.
6. Submitting work that was created prior to this semester is considered cheating (if you have previously
taken this course, do not submit your previous work).
Consequences of cheating:
1. First offense of cheating: The first offense of cheating is defined as the first, individual assignment
submitted that involved cheating. The first offense of cheating will result in a zero grade for all parties
involved.
2. Second offense of cheating: The second offense of cheating is defined as the second, individual
assignment submitted that involved cheating. The second offense of cheating will result in a failure for the
course for all parties involved.
Attendance Policy (also see Attendance and Title IV Financial Aid Information below):
Each student is expected to attend every class. There are no excused absences. Your final grade will likely be
adversely affected if you miss more than the equivalent of four classes.
Attendance will be monitored by the instructor for every class. Should you miss the first week of class you will be
removed from the class and receive a “NS” (No Show) from the instructor. Following the first week of class, should
you miss two consecutive weeks of classes you will be removed from the class and receive a “NS” (No Show) from
the instructor.
If a student does not attend class but submits course work, takes a quiz, or otherwise shows participation in the
class, the instructor may count that student as being in attendance. If the student stops attending and participating
in the class, the last date of attendance/participation will be recorded as either the last date of any assignment or
participation was submitted or the last time the student attended, whichever is the later date.
The “NS” will be reported to financial aid and will impact your financial aid status. It is the student’s responsibility
to contact the instructor as soon as possible when you are informed that you have received an “NS” in this course.
You may request reinstatement after being assigned an "NS." The decision for whether or not a student will be
reinstated is up to the instructor. If the instructor decides that a student has missed too much work to be
successful in the course, the instructor may choose not to reinstate the student. Students may be reinstated to
the class by the instructor one time. If the reinstated student again fails to attend for two weeks consecutively, the
instructor will again assign an "NS". The student may not be reinstated a second time by the instructor, but may
request reinstatement through the Exception Memo process in Student Affairs.
Instructors are not required to allow a student to make up work that he/she missed while absent from the class. If
you have not withdrawn or been reinstated and still have an “NS” after the last day of the semester, the “NS” will
convert to an “F” for the course.
Online Attendance Policy (also see Attendance and Title IV Financial Aid Information
below):
Each student is expected to complete all required assignments by the stated deadlines. Your final grade will likely
be adversely affected if you do not submit the required assignments by the stated deadlines.
Attendance will be monitored online by the instructor through the submission of an academic assignment, taking
an online exam and/or the participation in a required online discussion that is academically-related to the course.
Should you miss the submission of a required assignment during the first week of class you will be removed from
the online class and receive a “NS” (No Show) from the instructor. Following the first week of class, should you
miss the submission of a required assignment during a two-week period you will be removed from the online class
and receive a “NS” (No Show) from the instructor. When an assignment is submitted late, the last date of
attendance/participation will be recorded as the date the assignment submitted.
The “NS” will be reported to financial aid and will impact your financial aid status. It is the student’s responsibility
to contact the instructor as soon as possible when you are informed that you have received an “NS” in this
course. You may request reinstatement after being assigned an "NS.” The decision for whether or not a student
will be reinstated is up to the instructor. If the instructor decides that a student has missed too much work to be
successful in the course, the instructor may choose not to reinstate the student. Students may be reinstated to
the class by the instructor one time. If the reinstated student again fails to attend for two weeks consecutively, the
Instructors are not required to allow a student to make up work that he/she missed while absent from the class. If
you have not withdrawn or been reinstated and still have an “NS” after the last day of the semester, the “NS” will
convert to an “F” for the course.
Withdrawal Policy:
Students who decide not to complete the course are advised to withdraw by the official deadline for withdrawal or
change to audit. It is each student’s responsibility to withdraw or change to audit by the appropriate deadline
date.
Course/Instructor Evaluations:
Course and instructor evaluations are an important part of each course taught at PHSC. Courses that are held in
classrooms will receive a Scantron instrument for the “Course and Instructor Evaluation.” A Scantron instrument
also will be administered for courses that are a combination of classroom sessions and online assignments.
For 100% online courses, following the last day to withdraw for the semester you will receive a notification in your
course room that you should complete the “Course and Instructor Evaluation.” You will be given one week to
complete the online course evaluation. Regardless of whether you are taking an in class or online course, please
be sure to complete this important evaluation for each of your courses as all students are strongly encouraged to
submit an evaluation. The evaluation you complete is submitted directly to the Office of Institutional
Effectiveness, NOT to your instructor and the feedback you provide is completely anonymous and confidential!
Disability Statement:
Pasco-Hernando State College is responsible for ensuring equal access, accommodations and services to individuals
with documented disabilities in compliance with Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Students
with disabilities add to the diversity at PHSC, bringing special skills, strengths, creativity and unique experiences
that enrich our campus communities. PHSC strives for every member of the college community to contribute to a
respectful and inclusive campus environment. If there are aspects of the design, instruction, and/or experiences
within this course that result in barriers to your inclusion or assessment of achievement, please notify the
instructor as soon as possible and/or contact the Office of Disabilities Services (ODS) at the PHSC campus most
convenient to you. An ODS staff member will assist you in the accommodation process or visit the PHSC ODS
website.
Software Policy:
Students are to review the PHSC computer use policy in the College Catalog/Student Handbook. Only authorized
College staff may download or install software on College equipment. Use, installation or downloading of software
or other computer files without proper authorization or licensing may be a violation of Federal and/or State laws
and/or Rules of the District Board of Trustees. Students found to have violated this policy may be subject to
discipline in accordance with the College Catalog/Student Handbook.

any software program for any reason whatsoever. Violation of this policy will subject you to college disciplinary
action and possible criminal penalties.
